Here I think is the bottom line - - Danny busts his gut, especially emotionally, every single day. Whether in practice or recruiting etc. Think about being in kids houses, day after day, representing the University and begging kids to come and providing them all the good reasons etc. and being rejected more often than not and doing it again tomorrow. And leaving it all out there and your kids doing the same for you and the University every Saturday etc.

And you go and ask your boss for things you need to keep up with the others you compete with in those houses and on those fields and then two things basically happen (and this is in fact what basically happened) 1. Your boss tells you to go away and stop bothering him with your wants and needs and just keep doing the job your doing! and 2. That same boss goes "home" (in this case to Washington) and does nothing. Nothing for you certainly. But also just nothing for the University etc. Every day - - still nothing. Shows none of the same emotional passion that you bring every day. But scolds you for asking. This is an untenable situation. You can't be that emotionally invested and not feel supported and keep going to work every day. It's just too hard. I am quitting every single day and twice on Sunday. Its not a lateral move because that's a better job day in and and day out if for no other reason than your boss is invested WITH you. Period.

Good points and can you imagine what a head coach moving to an in conference school does to recruiting.

You ABSOLUTELY hit the nail on the head. If DR leaves, this is exactly why.

And how do you know that such is the case as you suggest in your numbers 1 and 2? What facts do you have to support them? I am not saying they are false, but unless you know them to be a fact, not just accepted rumor, it is unfair to characterize such a situation and demonize such a person.

Ok I have sat on my hands long enough. Here are just a couple of examples of how the program is unsupported or has a lack of planning and more of a reactive style of leadership by the Administration.

1. During summer camp the School had a planned electrical shutdown. Athletic's had no contingency plan in place if there was a problem with 100 student athletes staying on campus. There was a failure, players slept in cars and in the press box because there was no plan. Basically fend for yourself.
2. Didn't have enough team shoes and t-shirts to provide for the whole 95 man roster.
3. Most central Virginia high school programs have better locker rooms than this program.
4. The showering facilities are older than my high school built in the 50's
5. We don't have a trainers cart to remove injured players off the field which was definitly shown to be a need this year.

Just for starters.

+1
Ever notice that the team doesn't have a team ball cap? and the list could go on........

sounds like someone does not know how to make out a solid budget. cannot imagine Ken Hart not having enough shirts and socks, what is up with that?

or spending the money in the wrong spots. the entire deal, assuming we are getting the real story, is a complete cluster fu$$

Damn. I had no idea that we were on the brink of disaster.
What's next? Do we make the players wear used jerseys for practice?
Come on. These are problems, of course, and they need to be addressed...and I am sure that they will or would have been had the situation been approached differently, but do they justify the hysteria and the ad hominem attacks now prevalent in mosts of the posts on this board?

Ken retired the next man up is a joke. I would love to know why the team gear only had spiders on it this year without football. There were many occasions where the team didn't get their stuff washed from the day before. I believe that was addressed. Starters away jerseys left in Richmond, remember the game where Hudson had to wear a different number. Curious why no names were put on the back of the jerseys as well this year. Ken Hart was a legend and we were spoiled.

This doesn't sound like the daffodils and buttercups and the Sound of Music and other UR greatness to which LNKSPIDER refers. How such naïveté thrives is at the kernel of the problem.Rose color glasses syndrome along with drinking the RC koolade.

well, somebody is going to be wrong on this, either LNK is drinking the kool-ade or he knows the truth or others on here are way out of line or know the truth. we should be able to hear the rest of the story shortly.

Sorry, not trying to create hysteria. But someone asked for facts. There are other examples just wanted to provide some real data. These young men are low maintenance individuals but deserve better. I will retire my soap box for the day. I hope the next coaches have the same character, morals and ethics as the ones we are losing. Go Spiders!!

Just this one is stunning to me. Not having electricity is a disaster. Borderline negligent. Sleeping in cars? How did this not come out until now? This is a disaster (I repeat!).

Please contribute more insight.Your references clearly point out lack of management support and awareness for the program.

The writing style of LNKSPIDER would imply a 'she' not 'he'.

This whole thread was eye opening. The silver lining is all of this sounds very easily fixable with some basic project management.

In general - whose job is it to run this stuff? Is it the associate AD working with the director of football ops?

The school wastes money in so many other places this shouldn't be hard to fix.

Not accusing you of creating hysteria and appreciate your insight. But like others said, that sounds like something that can be easily fixed.

Nattering nabobs of negativity. I hope the recruits aren't reading this stuff
It needs to change, hiding the facts won't cut it for long. I believe when Cooper took over, the football endowment had $80 million dollars in it. It's got to be north of $100 by now. What on earth are they doing with the money.

Saving it up to buy out Huesman, I hope. And then throw one hell of a party?

I heard that Danny may have asked this question too! And some folks didn't like his asking.

well, you do not use the endowment principal, you use the money thrown off of it so not a windfall by any means. am sure whatever it is goes into the athletic budget to be spent accordingly.

Where does your kid's $63,000/year Cost of Attendance, donation/season tickets, $7 Coke/hotdog, and $60 sweat shirts go??? How about an extra pair of gloves for the players??

a hundred million would throw off say 5% that's 5 million dollars. I'm kind of wondering if there needs to be some audit of those funds.

it was to endow football nothing else. Sr loved football, Jr is more of a basketball man, but it was raised specifically to support and continue football.

With $5m endowed revenue, the imputed cost of each scholarship is $60,000.
$60k x 63=$3.7m

Danny and staff salaries and bennies=$1.3m

$5.0m goes quickly. There's your audit en gratis.

The $100m is not sufficient to support the program. It should be incremented by at least another $20m in order to stay ahead of increasing costs namely coaching and staff salaries.

The endowment is to HELP pay for football not pay for it all. I suspect the point here is that money was raised to support football but the support going to football wasn't raised. At least not to the level some believe it should be. I don't know the math, but I believe its certainly possible that endowment goes up and pays more of budget, but sport gets less from school general fund and total team spend stays same - - - despite money being raised to move program forward. IF this happened, that's effectively money raised for football being converted to something else. Donors wouldn't like it and neither would fund raisers who raised it. IF this happened, we'll hear about it loud and clear in short order. Followed by Gill's departure. Nothing will get you out faster than loss of donor support.

But its not all that clear what may have happened. One mans belief that football got "shorted" may not be shared by all with different perspectives.

So 32, if I'm reading your post correctly, the endowment fund has to pay for the entire football budget? Including all scholarships?

Who pays for the chemistry students scholarship? Is there chemistry endowment fund?

when that football endowment program was being raised, UR cost about $15,000 per year. was in the mid 80s.

People don't want to hear this. I remember when my son was playing 3 ears ago and after games kids would ask him for his game gloves and then to sign them. He wouldn't do it. I remember asking him why he didn't give his gloves to those kids and he explained that he couldn't get any more gloves unless he wore out his pair and even then he had to turn the old ones in to get a new pair. He had to buy all his own cold weather gear as well. Don't get me wrong, we love Richmond and we are grateful. But whe. It comes to budgets and football investment, we fall short. There are a lot of budget issues many don't know about. And the weight room is a total joke.

A 5 million budget/endowed funds must be a joke.
