Blue Helmets

Did we not wear blue helmets multiple times last year? I’ll admit that I’ve tried to forget most of the season though

I thought I heard the white helmets are a newer more protective version and that is why they are using them now. If that is correct we would need to purchase a new set of blue. Having said that I prefer the look of the blue. In fact I most like the all blue unis. Memories of the Natty run.

The white helmets were a cool "surprise" when we brought them out a few years ago. I'd like to see us go back to the blue helmets as our regular look and break out the white helmets out for special games such as JMU, W&M, Homecoming, or playoffs. There may be budget restraints for having two current sets of helmets though.

They need to break out a couple hundred k and have a red, blue and a white. Love the blue.

Look at the pics of Walker Gillette, etc. in the late '60's and early '70's - numbers on the top of the shoulders, white pants, blue helmets. A great look.

The white helmets are sick! ESPN discussed the new uniforms a couple of years ago saying these Richmond uniforms are Sweet when they upset UVA. I believe it was Scott Van Pelt. The blue helmets are not as nice to use with the uniforms. Now bringing a matted red look would be real cool.

can't believe the school can't afford two sets of helmets......I would love to see red for a change

My math is a little bit shaky, but figuring conservative growth for a $2 billion fund, you could probably buy helmets for the entire student body with 1 day's worth of interest.

I like the white helmets with red jerseys and white pants the best. Not feeling the blue stuff anymore.

Realize this is a sentiment statement - as you’re right that the math is shaky. 1% interest on $2B is $20M. 1 day of that is $55k. That doesn’t go very far.

Realize that concept is make in jest but this is part of UR’s funding raising issue. People think just because there is an endowment that there’s money for every cause. I’m not saying that it shouldn’t be spent down, but it can’t fund everything.

Ok, I realize that I said the entire student body, but you can buy a 100 helmets for $55k? Put it in the student safety budget then, or maybe the money they spend on giveaways trying to get the students to show up to games...they sure don't work.

my fav has always been the white pant, blue jersey, blue (red spider) helmet. recall a w&m game when my brother was playing and they wore blue jerseys the first half and red jerseys the second half. as i remember, it did not do much good for the end result. certainly have the option to have many mix and matches and do hope they go back to the blue helmets when they can afford it.

I know this topic has been discussed before but I'm interested/curious to know how much discretion a school has with the allotment of its endowment to athletics. It's my understanding that UVA and Vanderbilt may use some of their endowment to help supplement scholarships in baseball for example. Granted, I don't know if that is a fact and I have no idea what the NCAA's stance is but there is definitely the general impression by fans that we at UR "have tons of $" but refuse to spend it on athletics. Again, I'd love to know what kind of restrictions schools operate under in this realm and how these decisions are made. Probably over my pay grade though, lol.

the vast majority of athletic spending comes from the school not income like at a vandy which shares in the sec deal though they do not have the overall support and $$$ that a tennessee or bama has. a lot of our endowment is already earmarked for specific spending and is not sitting there.

My understanding is that these new helmets that reduce impact are in the $1000 each range per a sports talk show on the subject, I saw. Taking 80+ players and installing another helmet(blue) is not a cheap venture by any means.

just throw $100k in the budget for the new men’s basketball practice facility. Mooney seems to get whatever he wants and watching him coach gives me concussions symptoms (headache, nauseous, etc)

So are you implying that you wouldn't pay 1000.00 a helmet for the safety of your student athletes? Because in this climate of concussions schools who put safety of the players will get big props in my book. Parents really want the best equipment for their student athletes so lets do the math 100 players times 1000.00 is not much when it comes to safety. I'm glad they do a great job with the equipment at UR for our guys!

Don’t think anyone is disagreeing with that. Just the concept that $100k for a spare set of helmets is a lot at the FCS level. In other words, $100k seems ok for a set for the team. $200k for the team to have an extra set is harder to justify.

No they should have these helmets, absolutely. Just question having the need for a different colored helmet from a budget perspective.

No in my opinion when a team has two sets of helmets that means less hits and damage will be done to the game worn helmets which is a smart move. By having only one set you have more issues with the helmets. They use the blue helmets for practice to alleviate the damage that could be done to the game helmets. 200k is small money for the safety of your team. It's not about swag or recruiting to me it's plain and simple put your guys in the best equipment or get out of the game.

Makes sense - hasn’t thought about it quite like that. I was more thinking about multiple game helmets. Either way, I’m all for anything that helps health wise.

Can't football teams strike equipment deals like basketball teams do with sneaker contracts? At the very least it would seem like they could get a discount. Is the $1,000 price the MSRP listing price, or is it the "I'm buying a hundred of these things" bulk discounted price? Don't know so just asking.

I'm no coach but I did just stay at Holiday Inn Express (rack rate $199 but I paid $86).

The issue I imagine is that helmet manufacturers will give sweet deals to SEC, Big 10, etc schools to advertise what is the best. Unfortunately no middle/high school athletes are making decisions on what to buy based on what UR is wearing.

Of course, when Auburn is pulling in $70M they can literally piss away $400k on helmets and not notice.

Good helmets typically run between 400.00 to 1000.00. They have a four star rating and some can carry a five star rating. When I coached at the high school level we only ordered four star rated helmets. These guys are bigger faster and stronger then years ago, so its only reasonable that the collisions are going to have more impact. In my honest opinion a college team and pro teams should have the top rated helmets in the business. The NFL has place a list out for the helmets that are no longer considered safe for its players on a list. Tom Brady's helmet is one that was grandfathered in because he has been using it for a 17 years. I know the website is out to see, so if there if someone that is reading this please put the list up and it will show which helmets are on the higher rated spectrum.

Question for folks - how long do helmets last now? > 1 season, 1 season, < 1 season?

Depends on the hits and damage on the helmet. They are sent out every year to be reconditioned to the factory. Most helmets have a life of 3 to 4 years give or take whose using the helmet. It varies from player to player because for example a defensive and offensive linemen has contact every play, but a WR and CB might not have contact to the head on every play.

I talked to a friend this week that collects old college fb helmets. He said they had to be "recertified". It was one of the things that told him they were game worn and not a good fake.

I admit that I have a tendency to underthink things, but if we had 2 sets of helmets, wouldn't they last twice as long? Therefore the cost for the second set be a wash?

What am I missing here?
