Blake Francis - Richmond commit

Wonder where he ranks on this 40 man team. Seriously.
A lot of mid majors out there, say 200. Assume 13 players per team = 2,600 players and Blake makes the top 40. Mmmmm. Might be a player? Ya think?

This kid is the exact type of transfer we need to go after. A younger guy who will get to sit one year and learn our system and his teammates and then have 2 years of eligibility. Not some one year grad transfer who doesn't have time to get acclimated to either the coaches or his teammates. It's been noted on this board before but Francis scored 17 against Missouri and 24 against Dayton so we know he is capable of competing against higher level competition. Hope we can land him.

I hope we get him as well, even though the idea of a starting backcourt that is 5'8" and 6'0" and weighs about 300 pounds combined is a little daunting and I think would require some systematic shifts. But both he and Gilyard are scorers and shooters, so it could be interesting. Honestly I would be pretty surprised if he does not sign here at this point. We have to be the clear leaders for him.

I definitely agree that this is the type of transfer that would find more success with us. The one thing that gives me the slightest pause is the other schools mentioned. To counter that, IIRC I do not believe that TJ Cline had an awesome list of schools trying to get him to transfer.

We started Kendall and Shawn'dre and I think that was OK.

Dropped by the RC Friday afternoon, both Kyle and Blake were visiting. Glad both arrived before the inclement weather. Would be great if both joined the Spiders as they would seem to fill very important slots for both the upcoming year (Kyle) and subsequent years (Blake).
(Will post on both Kyle and Blake threads.)

Played his high school ball in Northern Virginia - ;) puts him a lot closer to home

Might add that I watched both Kyle and Blake shoot a few shots in street clothes. IMHO both had nice form and most swished. Like that Blake is left handed.

Very positive! The kid can score. We'll have the smallest backcourt in the country for two years, but if they score 40 points a game, who cares.

Great get! Glad we got some good news after striking out with other recruits this past weekend.

Blake is a proven scorer in D1 and can fit very well in our system. We need to address our depth concerns for this year. Will be interesting to see how the last two scholarships play out.

This is really good news. I'll take a proven D-1 player almost anyday over the unknowns of a high school recruit. 17ppg, 40% 3 point shooter, seems like a classic 2 guard to compliment our PG.

I do have concerns about lack of height, espicially on defense, but you say yes every day and Sunday to a guy who can score like Francis can.

awesome! that's a great transfer. as mentioned before, not only a great shooter and scorer but he had some really good games against top competition.

A mid major All American (recall TJ made this once), Blake also led in steals. Frightening for opposing guards to have Jacob and Blake on the floor at the same time! Brings new meaning to the term “Steal City”!

This is a solid get. As others have noted - - - the previous performance at D1 level sure makes you feel better about the likelihood of success than the high school highlight reel does!

This looks like a solid commit - but on the flip side, it only reaffirms that next year is not the year. This kid sits out next season - but does Mooney even make it past next season if we have - say - a .500 season?

Let's be positive here, when Mooney lands an athletic 6'9" 240lb grad transfers that averaged 12 pts and 8 rebounds last year, and a stud guard immediatley eligible also, we will be well above .500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a good incoming transfer does not reaffirm that next year is not the year. it's like you're saying we're better off without this transfer ... and we're not.
we have a strong core coming back. they continue to develop.

As a freshman, Blake got co rookie of the week after averaging 18.5 points and shooting 70% from 3:

Blake has a very athletic family (see below). One cousin, Tyler Thornton, played for Duke and as I recall was a high school teammate of Cedrick Lindsay at Gonzaga high school in DC.

“Has one sibling, Branden, who played football at Liberty University (2010-2013) ... His cousin, Tyler Thornton, played basketball at Duke University (2010-2014)... Another cousin, Marques Hagans, attended the University of Virginia (2002-2005) and was selected in the fifth round (144 overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft by the former St. Louis Rams (now, the Los Angeles Rams) ... Hagans spent three spent three seasons with the Rams before being picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2009 campaign and finished his career with the Washington Redskins... ”
