Beilein

His first season at Richmond was pretty good. But can’t blame him, he’ll be able to retire and enjoy having made more money this season than I’ll make in my lifetime.

So, the players go 19 - 63 last year, but feel they know everything and don't need to be coached a certain way this year? What a bunch of losers.

Agree, I read an article about this and could not believe the terrible player reactions considering the terrible roster and lack of success they have had. It is a players league, but I think Kenny Atkinson is in for an absolute #$% show when Kyrie Crazy decides to play again. Check the Nets record with Krazy vs Without Krazy.

Tough spot for JB for sure, he really must have got tired of the college recruiting.

Hopefully he decides to retire in Richmond... and then coach us again.

Or fired .... gets good buyout .... happy with less money at UR .... less recruiting pressure than at UM like 23 suggested. If you told me that would happen if 20-12 and no NIT this season? ALL IN! And possibly his son straightens his life out and? Honestly I rather reside in the Richmond area than "the mistake by the lake."

Which one particular player created this catastrophe in The NBA? It hasnt always been this way. One player got the ball in motion and now they all feel that they are more important and in more control than the coaches and owners

the search function isn't working for me so I can't add to the "why the heck would Beilein leave Michigan for the Cavs" thoughts from before. I know some thought he'd succeed despite a bad roster. hope he decides he prefers to go back to college someday.

Succeed eventually and sure faster than most expected but not this year. No coach was winning this year with that roster. What's funny is a few of the reasons listed in that article were the exact reasons stated for hiring Beilein in first place. So I'd say what he's doing is working tho it's probably two steps back first. They have a roster of expiring vet contracts who know they're gone after this year. Part of the plan. You'll see him retool for the better starting next year imo. I wish he stayed in college too but he's exceptional so never count him out.

Two things I think happened to make JB move to the NBA.
1) Age and Money - I think JB is getting close to retiring and has always wanted to move up the ladder. What better time than now - when he is probably about 3-4 years away from retiring. He goes to the CAVS who have no immediate expectations of winning, and are just asking him to lay the foundation for the future. This sounds a lot like management speak for - it might be better if we lose now, get guys with a good attitude, and in the meantime - get a lot of draft picks. Not to mention the key factor - the Cavs are definetley giving him a pay bump from Michigan. He was making about $3.8 million at Michigan, and I believe when Donovan left Florida for OKC, they paid him about $5 million, so safe to assume he is making in the range of $5 million for 5 years. Not a bad retirement gift for the grandkids and their eventual kids.
2) NCAA Landscape - JB has always been a guy who follows the rules, no matter what. But I think the past few years he has seen and learned that in order to compete year in and year out for NCAA championships - you got to be able to bend, and even break rules at times to succeed. And I don't think this is something he was willing to take on. Schools like Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, etc - are always at the top, but are just one false step away from NCAA sanctions. Not to mention the NCAA now wants to pay players a stipend or let them make money off their likeness - I think JB saw where the college game was heading and did not want to be a part of it.

I don't think he will have any success in the NBA in terms of wins, but I don't think that is the measure of success the Cavs are looking for. They are looking to turnover their roster in the next 3 years. During that time - they will lose a lot of games, but gain a lot of young players in terms of the draft. They are asking JB to instill the fundamentals on them, and a hard working attitude. That is harder to do with veterans in the NBA, but easier with guys just 1-2 years in the league looking to make a name for themselves. I would expect the Cavs to thank JB for his service after 3-4 years, once they have a good roster in place and look towards a more seasoned NBA coach. In their eyes - JB would have succeeded.

how exactly? they'll add one really talented young player in the draft, but a lot of guys come off contract and they won't attract any top talent. they have to overpay average free agents. it's Cleveland ... no offense to any Cleveland people here.

Kevin Love seems on board ...
Love acknowledged the difficulty in Beilein’s adjustment to the NBA from college but said Beilein’s style is what the Cavs need at this point, especially with so many young players who spent only a year in college. “It’s a throwback because he does a lot of skill work and fundamental work,” Love told The Detroit News on Tuesday. “It reminds me of when I was back in college and we definitely did a lot of film there, so player development-wise, that’s really key — especially when you’re young — is to adopt that as a strategy to better your game. “When you look at film, it doesn’t lie. You can’t make excuses on the film and say, ‘I was here,’ when you weren’t. It always shows you where your game is.”

My guess is that Love is out of the Cavs this year with a trade. Just too old for them to use in a rebuild. I would expect the Cavs to hold on to him to close to trade deadline and see what teams are desperate to make a move. They could probably get a 2nd round pick for Love at this point, with some other players involved as well.

I mentioned they have a lot of expiring contracts, their roster will look much different and he can retool with lot of young players who buy in. Not saying they'll attract the top free agent talent but Beilein has proven he can win with less talent. It will certainly be better than a lot of lame duck vets who aren't very good to begin with. More like how broadly. I'm not interested in NBA enough to care much but how exactly is the Cavs job anyway.

I think it's a really tough job unless you land the #1 pick a couple times.
I don't know how much of a raise he got to leave Michigan, but I prefer the Michigan job ... a lot.

& the WVA job was dire. Beilein likes challenges & rebuilds. I agree it is a tough job but it's not impossible. I've read enough of your posts over the years Sman to know you put a lot of things into the impossible category. Don't be so negative as they say round yer. Teams can get better, but nobody including the Cavs management anticipated a quick fix.

I don't think the WVU was dire. it's a large state school in a high major conference. better football than basketball school, but nothing to really hold it back. you can win there.

I don't think you can win in Cleveland in today's NBA. LeBron was a special situation. just my opinion though. I know I could be wrong.

what have I put in the impossible category that I've been proven wrong about in the past?

I don't think you can win in Cleveland in today's NBA either. That's the point. We r talking about tomorrow's NBA, 2 years from now perhaps. Ha. Our just alert the Cavs fanbase, you'll never win it's impossible no need to watch, no teams ever in any sports who are way down ever get better. You are doomed to a lifetime of losing, you are in the Rust Belt, tell teams like the detroit tigers too.

Sorry sman I did not keep a spreadsheet it was just a generalization.

Wasn't the ongoing long term rumor that Beilein's dream is/was to be Syracuse coach? Born in 1953 compared to Boeheim born in 1944; by that metric there is still time...............

rethinking a bit. it doesn't take too many pieces to change a team in the NBA. Cleveland will be in the lottery again this year. the last two landed them Sexton and Garland. they have team control of those two for another 3 or 4 years after this. you add a Wiseman or Carey and you're most of the way to a rebuild. so maybe you can win in Cleveland. getting in the lottery 3 times in a row is the key. and don't miss.

They were hoping big this year to win the Zion sweepstakes and lost out. But they may have won with their draft pick in garland who will be solid in years to come. The issue with Cleveland and the NBA in general now is the super teams dominate. The days of building teams through the draft are over. You can get the process started with the draft - to ultimately show a big time free agent you have good pieces in place - but given the current landscape of the NBA, I just don’t see any big time players wanting to go to Cleveland. 3 reasons for this. 1 - it’s cleveland, which is not a desirable market. 2 - I am not sure any player wants to follow LeBron right now in Cleveland. It’s just too soon. 3 - Beilein. Not that he is a bad coach. But not sure an NBA superstar right now wants to work with a rookie coach out of college. Those guys want seasoned NBA coaches who know the ropes and will give them the “superstar” treatment.
But like I said earlier - I think Cleveland hired JB to get the young pieces in place and then dump him when they are close or think they are close to landing big time free agents.

Thanks for that spiderman - in today's "super charged" climate..receiving more attention than it warrants............... Beilein is 66 years old and anyone who has reached that age or beyond readily understands how easy it is to say one word when you mean another.......

They are going to continue to struggle I think. Only way they will get better is through the draft and looking around this year's college board - not seeing a whole lot to be excited about except the kid from Memphis who only played a handful of games. Not a good time for JB to have a weak draft class.

Speaking of his son - any update on him and what actually happened? As expected he disappeared and has kept quiet, which is what he should do probably for a few years if he wants to coach again. Niagara is 3-10 and 1-1 in Conference right now under Paulus.

can't be fun there. he'll lose more games this year than in the last 5 at Michigan.

I know Pat stepped down - just wondering if he has popped up anywhere in the news since. The answer should be no as I think he needs to disappear for year or two before thinking of even coaching a HS team anywhere.

As for his dad - I figured the culture change to the NBA would be difficult for him as for any college coach making the jump, but seems like it has been harder - especially when dealing with a roster that is trying to turnover its older players. Unfortunatley in this day and age, with social media and the internet - everything gets blown out of proportion. He used a poor choice of words, likely by mistake - and 20 years ago - we probably would have never even heard this story. It would have been something that happened in a film session, he maybe would have apologized if someone brought to his attention (I am thinking it might not even made a ripple 20 years ago and no one would have cared) - but today, as we saw here - it almost got him fired. Crazy.

On a side note - I am still picking the Spiders to have more wins at the end of the year than the Cavs. Right now Cavs are 11-27 and Spiders are 12-3. I will need a post-season win or two (probably NIT) out of the Spiders, but think it will be close.
