Around the A-10: 2024–25 Edition

With VCU losing to Dayton, we are in an interesting spot tomorrow. We lose to George Mason, then VCU has to share championship with George Mason (VCU still gets the 1 seed). However, I really want to beat Mason tomorrow so they don’t get a share of the championship after last year. Would be sweet revenge. Whether we can beat them tomorrow, don’t really know, but it sure would be nice.

If VCU found a way to lose in the finals and be first team out, it would be interesting…

Rothstein arguing that VCU is likely cooked for an at-large with tonight's loss.

idk why anyone would listen to him on bracketelogy. and of course Lunardi too. always funny when I see Lunardi referenced in articles, which is often, such as Lunardi as so & so as a 9 seed. Lunardi is bad at bracketology!

I'd love to see VCU out. but they are 29 in kenpom and 31 in net which is the ncaa metric. 95% of power teams would be locks with those rankings. meanwhile these guys have Oklahoma in. OU who is 5-12 in the SEC. 5-12. gtfo. I guess they'll begrudgling move OU out when they lose to TX today.

VCU issue is they have beaten 0 teams in the field. Colorady State is nice win tho and CSU now being on the bubble helps. Factors still out there to hurt VCU. like u can't lose in quarters. But they won't. They r more likely to win A10 tourney now too. And tbd if 2025 has more bid stealers than normal, less bid stealers, or average.

I hope they're right. but again why would u trust those guys. VCU is still right there. to say likely cooked is absurd. I would feel lot better about defending that if it weren't vcu.

yeah it's like Lunardi basically "invented" bracketology but then a thousand others came along and perfected it. Rothstein I thought used to be a champion of the midmajors but maybe he's auditioning for an espn role showing how much he can love on the P5's ha!

as far as VCU, nobody knows what their resume or 20 other bubble teams resumes will look like a week from now, they could be much better or much worse than it stands today. I will say that is unsettling for the future if the A10 turns out to be a 1 bid league as the 7th rated conference out of 31.

Not really anything new here, but Bernie again mentioning the $1m–$3m range.

“I think from everything that’s been benchmarked across the country, we’re feeling like that probably is the range that it’s going to be important,” said McGlade, in the Richmond area for the A-10 women's tournament at the Henrico Sports & Events Center. “And I think each institution’s going to have to really take a good, hard look at their own program and try to figure out what they can really manage financially to be able to continue to be nationally relevant in the sport of men’s basketball, as a basketball-centric league."

I had heard at one time that they wanted the VMI coach. Maybe he turned them down
The guy who has won 25% of his games overall and 18% in SoCon play?

I do recognize he got some publicity this past week for getting VMI to the SoCon semis, and not many places tougher to win at than VMI, but damn. About the best career ladder move a VMI coach has been able to hope for over the past 30+ years is getting hired at another SoCon school.

poaching from the 4th place Big South conference team. Can we get LaSalle the hell out of the A10 already.

I'm going to admit...I like Nichols. He was on GK radar for us. Good player under Beilein at WVU. That's a strong plus for me. Good asst experience too. Radford not easy. in totality he's been solid at worst there.

what hurt him badly was a DUI, obviously a really poor choice. So his ability to jump higher than lasalle was unlikely. Maybe he realized that. But I agree with Goodman here I'm not sure lasalle is best place for anyone. nobody really works out there long term.

also he apparently dealt with lot of injuries. I share this because 1 it's Huss who is great and we've talked about. But also when have u ever heard Mooney talk like this? hardly ever get that insight. check out 2nd video...1:30 long...

on Radford's offense: "... when things break down, they typically open up a double gap ..."
anyone know what that means?

all about spacing.

Our next hire is Josh Merkel from Randy Mac. A Beilein staffer at WVU, worked for Neubauer too, goes 25-5 or thereabouts every year running a version of that system, won a D3 natty, and is just an awesome guy. He's only still at RMC because his wife works there and he's not in a rush to take a lower-level D1 job. But he would win and win big here.

He's on the list. I need to stop talking about list. It weirdly keeps me sane but yet it's also depressing.

I like Merkel too. randy mac is a breeding ground. U have a better chance out of randy mac than u do as asst. at U of R.

He deserves to move up. It's just a big jump from D3 to Richmond and A10. Not saying he isn't capable. But it probably would give off little ol' Richmond vibes & that we're destined to move to Pat League and not what u want. Something to that perception wise. However it might be his only real drawback.

Fair assessment. Normally I would not want a D3 guy, but since the two guys before him have succeeded(ish) at D1 jobs, and given the level of success he's had there and his D1 pedigree, I think it works. You can probably quintuple his current salary and still save $500K or more from what we are paying Mooney and use it to pay the players directly. And he's a dynamic guy who honestly might move onto bigger things within 3-4 years if we hired him.

Understand he's been approached with other opportunities and turned them down, they love Ashland. But he could move to UR and continue to live in Ashland.

Runs a much better youth camp according to my 13YO.

Will he be willing to hang around another 10 years or so to apply for our opening? I hear we pay well with little expectations or pressure.
