Another Game Against Northern Iowa

I don’t get it we give up to many offensive rebounds but don’t get many fast break points. What are we doing ?

One reason is team rebounding is culture driven and its simply not part of our culture. A more direct reason currently is that when we struggle to stop dribble penetration we have to help and rotate on defense which leaves everyone out of position to rebound. Its not that we are sneaking guys out on the fast break that we rebound poorly because we don't.

I’d love to see the film but it looks to me too many guys are releasing to offense and not boxing out

I am going to sound like a broken record but our perimeter defense is simply awful at the moment. They get into the paint at will - - - and multiple people able to do so. This especially frustrating considering they have demonstrated no ability to shoot from the perimeter!

We need Cayo to get on track. He will be the key to a successful season.
Coaches are going to need to help him some. Teams have looked at the early film and are stunting and digging at him in the short corner/post and are taking away what he wants to do and then he gets a little lost as t what else to do. To much dribble and holds it too long.

If TB keeps hitting threes will open the middle again for Cayo

Defense against penetration has been much better in the 2nd half. And not coincidently, we haven't given up many offensive rebounds.

I am disappointed however to see Grant returning to whining and flopping all game. He had stopped doing that, but tonight it almost every trip on offense.

1 more assist from Gilyard means 3 players with a double double?

That was a sweet and-1 bucket by Cayo.
He went quickly - - before the dig or double could get to him. That's a good adjustment. He's going to also need to add the ability to attack the double with passing. Right now if he gets doubled or stunted at, he just backs out.

I have not been a huge Mooney guy (to say the least) but I loved his explanation for going to Sal over Grace in the 2nd half and he correctly noted that it helped tremendously. That's not the kind of adjustment he seemed to be willing to make in the past - - he seemed to always want to follow the book - - so I need to give him credit there where its deserved!

I am disappointed however to see Grant returning to....flopping all game.

He spent so much time laying on the floor I thought he was trying to make snow angels

Best game I have seen from Sal. Starting to get comfortable out there, nice to see.

Glad we finally got to see what Sal must have been doing in practice. Hopefully this was the break though game for him and he can give the team more quality bench minutes.

Hope the Spiders are ready to play a full 40
minute game on Sunday because WVU is going to bring it.

Overall there was a lot to like. Three double doubles, players stepping up (Burton) when others are struggling (Cayo being doubled). Another solid game from Gilly. Would like to get more from the bench but it’s not necessary and it was nice to see Sal continue to play well on both ends.

The one thing we continue to do is go for stretches without scoring. Basketball can be a game of runs, but we tend to be more streaky than most teams.

Don’t want to focus to much on the negative with so many positive things to discuss (most already said), but there is one stretch in the 1st that they need to figure out better.

UNI went on a 18-3 run from 12:30 to about 4 mins left. We went through two officials timeouts and a long drought until Mooney finally called TO around the 4 mins mark. We either have to use those officials TOs better to change the momentum or Mooney needs to be quicker to call a TO (a common criticism of him).

Once he finally called the TO, the team settled down and went on a 9-1 run to end the half. Can’t let’s that happen against WVU.

Sal was great defender, better than other bigs.

A lot of negative comments on this tread for the game. Bottom line , we played pretty bad the first 16 minutes, called a time out and then completely dominated the last 24 minutes, out performing UNI by 20 over that time. Mooney made some terrific substitution, Burton was tremendous, Gilly is playing like an All American, a number of others made great contribute. Finally, Cayo had a difficult game, but we will see many terrific games from him this season.

If I ever root for a team that goes on this type of roll, your damn straight, I would be one arrogant and self righteous SOB and be proud of it. I think it is the nature of fans. See Virginia Tech back in their hey day. UVA basketball fans are developing a strong bit of self-righteousness now too.

Fortunately, I root for Philly teams, the Spiders, and Penn State, so I'm pretty well protected from that ever happening.

I am surprised to hear Northern Iowa fans are so rude.

As for, North Dakota State fans, they are some of the nicest people around. They were super friendly to us when we played up there. Invited us to their tailgates, offered us food and beers and liquor. They were proud of their accomplishments but certainly not arrogant at all. They knew of our successes and respected us for sure. I always say until we win another national title, I would just assume they continue to win.

Spend some time over on AnyGivenSaturday. :)

Then again, don't. If you have such a favorable impression of them, it's probably best to leave it unspoiled.

Waiting too long to call a TO has been a problem for CM for years. He loves waiting for the TV TO as we watch the team getting schooled. Ok tonight but bites us often.
