Alex Light was an unlikely survivor on NFL cut days, based on his football history. Light, a Green Bay Packers offensive lineman, had two scholarship offers coming out of Salem High School: Richmond and VMI.

Light, a 6-foot-5 309-pounder, started as a Spider each of the last three seasons. He was not drafted, signing as a preferred rookie free agent with Green Bay on May 4.

“Just that experience to have a few teams considering me as a prospect in the NFL is really a dream come true,” Light, named first-team all-CAA as a UR senior, said before the Packers signed him.

Light made 38 consecutive starts as a Spider, an indication of fitness, durability and toughness. “I’m super proud of that,” said Light.

While growing up in the Roanoke area, Light watched NFL games on Sunday and said he thought, “I want to be one of those guys.”

Light remembers Virginia Tech’s recruiters evaluating him at Salem High. “Basically, I wasn’t big enough, wasn’t fast enough, wasn’t strong enough, wasn’t athletic enough,” he said.

That inspired him to work harder, Light said.

As a Salem sophomore, Light was introduced to Richmond by former UR offensive-line coach Blaine McCorkle, and the Spiders “stuck with me,” Light said. A few ACC schools checked out Light. The interest never became serious.

“I did feel overlooked,” he said.

Light was a winner in Richmond before he signed with the Spiders. He started at center for the Salem basketball team that won the 2013 Group AA Division 4 state championship at VCU’s Siegel Center. Light had 14 points and 14 rebounds against Grafton in the championship game.

The Packers open against visiting Chicago on Sunday night and play at Washington on Sept. 23.

Only JOC could write an article about a local player making an NFL roster and re-use quotes from 6 months ago...... Does he not think he had a reaction since Saturday?
