AD Candidate - Jeff Compher

I am hearing that ECU AD Compher may be under consideration for our vacancy. Compher is under fire for the crummy state of their football program.

Doing a little research on Compher, a JMU grad, I could get behind this option.

I have a friend who went to ECU and he says their fan base wants him gone. They like the idea of losing him to us. I hope we go another direction. Their 2 major sports are both disasters. I don't think Compher hired Lebo, but he has been a head coach since 1998 and has been to 2 nit and 0 NCAA. Since firing Ruffin McNeal, ECU has spiraled to one of the worst teams in division 1 football this year. I think we can do better.

Had a very interesting conversation this past week with a donor we'll up the food chain from me. He indicated that he was cautiously optimistic after a recent meeting that the powers that be have changed their tune...to the positive about our football & basketball programs.

Compher just signed a 5 year extension effective 7/1/17 at $435,000.He ain’t coming to UR no how and we don’t pay anywhere near that number.Red herring.

That's good news DT. I'm certainly not meaning to beat up on you as the messenger here but it stinks that the powers that be need to change their tune in the first place...in short, why can't the administration wrap their heads around having great support for our two most important sports teams? We don't have to become Alabama but please don't handcuff these coaches by not providing them full support.

Unless we are trying to get into the AAC (snark) this sounds like a terrible candidate after reading up on the bio and casually observing ECU over the years. Their flagship sport is not ours and is a dumpster fire to boot. At the risk of sounding like FRS I don't want a trojan horse Dukebag running our athletic department. Just give it to Walsh if these are the type of candidates we are getting.

I am an ECU grad. Compher is actually getting an unfair deal from some of the fans at ECU. He had pressure from a few big donors to fire a beloved alum coach and when he did, some fans turned on him. Then the steam just grew with our football program being in rebuilding mode. ECU fans are vicious about football. But he has raised more money in a short period of time than any other AD in history and has us on the way to a major stadium expansion. He also made a great baseball coach hire. Lebo was there before he came and has a solid contract. I would like to see him get a job elsewhere just because it would help to heal our rabid fanbase to have a scapegoat, but he is doing a good job as evidenced by the contract extension.

To get a better picture, look at what he did for Northern Illinois. He hired Dave Doeren there who led them to a conference championship and is now coaching at NC State (ranked in the top 25). Best of luck with your search!

That makes more sense, to me the problem is Montgomery the football coach is over his head. I've heard the rumors about Ruffin not wanting to fire an assistant that the admin wanted him to fire so they let Ruffin go. They certainly have taken a number of large steps backwards. I haven't seen much improvement this year. I have some interest because I sent them alot of money for 4 years.
