About Dayton

Anyway, congratulations to Mooney and Hardt and kudos to Lunardi for finally scheduling a top flight team in the 15th year of Mooney's tenure.

Wait....someone is tapping me on the shoulder....excuse me...

If I'm Mooney, I'm starting all five walkons and offering Verbinskis's second semester scholarship money to whichever one of them takes Toppin out of the game in the first three minutes of action...

:D

Whoa - thought John Cheney had retired and this technique Chaney used when Temple was playing St. Joe's was verboten....................

I mean...... ehhhhhh... How badly do we really want to make the NCAA tournament, ya know??? :p

Understand but the answer has to be - "not that badly" - after all would that not taint our victory over Dayton???????
Ok, how about if we send people in to take charges? That still takes Toppin out of the game...

I'm just being stupid. I don't think we have any walk-ons who could injure Toppin even if they tried.

It looks like this game will not be on TV.
If not you can expect a lot of missing students.

No way, all is fair. Although I would be concerned for the health of our guys. We would run out of players after about 5 minutes, if we kept it up.

No worries - your great sense of "wit" preceded that post as evidenced by numerous other posts................

Was thinking about your profession and defending the client who was "on record" saying - even in an oblique way - let's work on taking him out...

And "with you" the walk ons are a great group of young men whom I would not want to see injured.................

This video has a pretty good breakdown of Dayton's offense. They call it their continuity offense.

It's going to be the biggest game in the last 50 years for the University of Richmond. 50 years! That's longer than some of you have been alive!

I think the only option for Toppin is Cayo to start and then Gustav when he comes in. But I suspect with Gustav - he will just post him up down low.

The big question is going to be Grant - who does he guard? Toppin starts as their Center basically but you can't put Grant on him - Toppin will dunk on him twice and he will be on the bench with 2 fouls. Next logical guy is Mikesell - but he plays more like a guard and can shoot if left open. Otherwise he will blow by Grant and we will be scrambling.

Expect Burton to come in for Cayo and guard Obi, not Gus. Burton is the only guy we have who can even come close to Obi’s athleticism

I wouldn't be surprised if Goose gets Mikesell, wish we had Francis for Crutcher...

But the question still remains - who does Grant take - that will likely be the biggest matchup problem on the floor. He will likely have to guard someone who can shoot if he lays off him, and will certainly blow by him. That is the concern - because if you watch Dayton, they like to lob over the top to Toppin and a lot of them come on drives when you help off him.

Agree. Time to reach into the wayback bag and drop the patented matchup zone on them.

The more that I sit here and think about it. It's not a bad idea to change up something.

Mikesell is shooting 29% from 3. I can live with Grant laying off him.

Feed Grant inside.

You are right.
Goose gets Landers & Watson...

Basically he is great at stopping 6'3" to 6'7" shooters...

I would expect Toppin guards grant on defense. Likely plays behind him and dares Grant to try maneuver around him with his 7 foot + wingspan and athletic abillity. But I would say if this is the case early - give the ball to Grant, and see if he can draw a foul real quick. Put the pressure on him.

Historically Mikesell is 33% from 3, so you can't really dare him to shoot it. He will make enough of those to beat you or at least make you adjust. If he was shooting 25 or below (Like Burton or Gustav) - then I would dare him, cause that would mean he is only making 1 out of 4 - but right around 30-33 - he is making 1-3...Not to mention, we have to rebound the misses, which is not our strong suit.

Some thoughts about the Dayton game.
First: As Jim Valvano told his team before the 1983 championship against Phi Slamma Jamma- we need to stop them from dunking. That's how I feel about Dayton-prevent the dunk, and we prevent frenzy.

Second: As Shooter advised coach about the second game in "Hoosiers": Make'm chuck it from the cheap seats. If Dayton dominates the paint-uh oh.

Can Toppin be stopped in the paint?
