SF, any thoughts?

I noticed that one of their biggest recruits, Alaina Brown, from last year is not swimming this weekend. I hadn't seen much from her during the in season meets and was wondering if she is injured? She is still on the roster.

I'm surprised because based on her times from HS I expected her to be a big part of the team this year. I assume she got some scholarship money as well so it really impacts the team when a swimmer of that caliber can't swim.

Haven't had a chance to really look through the sheets for A-10s, but I know the team has really come together and has been swimming well. No idea about Brown...she did miss the trip to Pitt in mid-January, but has otherwise been swimming in meets. She'll be missed this week.

Looking forward to following things...could be an exciting meet.

Spiders get off to a fantastic start in the 200 medley relay, cruising to victory in 1:39.48 for a school, conference, championship, and pool record and a solid NCAA B-cut. First A-10 squad in history to break 1:40, with the quartet of Hines, Kobelja, Smaniotto, and Brackett breaking their own record-setting performance from last year.

UMass and X both got disqualified, so they're in a big hole to start.

800 free relay up next in a few minutes.

Kobelja looks fast. The other 3 were right around last years splits. But Kobelja was about 7 tenths faster than last year.

Back half of 800 free relay was a little slow...Spiders took second in 7:24.25. Five seconds behind school record set last year by the same swimmers and three seconds behind Fordham.

Spiders and Fordham tied at the top of the leader board after day one. Long way to go still.

Thursday AM update. Three swimming events contested this morning. 1M diving prelims will be this afternoon, and we'll see the finals of that along with finals for the three morning events and the 200 free relay tonight.

Spiders looked pretty good in the 500 free this morning. Krebs led the way in second at 4:56.17, a ways off from her school record time but still sitting solidly for a big push tonight. Frosh Allison Titley dropped 11 seconds to take 6th and join Krebs in the final. Kuska and Kush will be coming back in the consolation final in 11th and 12th.

In the 200 IM, Mali Kobelja blew away the field to set a new meet and pool record of 1:59.53. Not quite a school record though, as Lauren Beaudreau still holds that at 1:58.10. Frosh Meredith Gouger snagged 8th to make the finals, while Fetter (10th) and Lerro (15th) are also coming back tonight.

In the 50 free, Cha Brackett sits in second place, just 0.01 out of the top spot. Hines (5th) and Vucic (7th) will join her in the championship final while Jordan (10th) and Cohan (12th) will be in the consolation final.

I scored out the places from morning preliminaries for those three events and had UR at 147 points for the night, easily beating La Salle (74) and Fordham (70). Obviously that doesn't yet include diving and the relay, but the Spiders are looking good for tonight so far.

Diving results are in, and frosh Katherine Cook is currently sitting in an astounding second place heading into tonight's finals. UR only has the one diver and so will lose some ground to other squads, but the damage will be limited if she can finish well tonight.

I've now updated my mock scoring based on prelim results, although obviously the timed final 200 free relay is not included:

UR: 164
UMass: 109
Fordham: 107
La Salle: 103
Duquesne: 44
Saint Louis: 29
URI: 26
Bona: 25
GW: 21
X: 13

Richmond leads Fordham 216 to 151 with the Diving and the 2Free Relay. Girls are looking strong with wins by Titley in the 500 and Mali with a meet record in the 2IM. Char and Hines took 2-3 in the 50.

Katherine Cook took third in diving, while the 200 free relay was victorious.

Spiders with a 272-217 lead over second-place Fordham at the end of the day.

Spiders are primed for another big evening after an impressive prelim session this morning.

400 IM: Spiders hold 4 of the top 5 spots, led by Kobelja with a meet and pool record of 4:17.05. Brady, Kush, and Gouger sit 3-4-5.

100 Fly: A little shorthanded here, but Smaniotto is in 2nd with a personal best of 55.34 and Fetter had a nice swim to take 11th.

200 Free: The Spiders were out in full force again, with impressive frosh Allison Titley leading the pack at 1:50.63 and defending champion Cha Brackett right behind her. Johnson (6th) and Cohan (8th) give UR half of the final heat, while Kuska (12th) represents the Spiders in the consolation heat.

100 Breast: Soph transfer Erin Brady leads the Spiders with a fourth place finish, while Bilott (tied for 9th) and Lerro (15th) are also coming back.

100 Back: Lauren Hines leads the way again in a solid prelim time of 53.61, and Smaniotto sits third as she pulls an impressive double individual event day. Fetter (also doing the double individual) is in 10th.

The 400 medley relay will be contested as a timed final tonight, but my calculations of the mock prelim scoring show UR grabbing 221 points in the individual events, easily outpacing Fordham at 104. If everything goes according to plan, the Spiders should have the title all but locked up after tonight...10th title in 11 years in the A-10.

I don't know much about the sport, but it seems as though this team has come a long way since the early results. It appears as though Matt has done a great job with the ladies again this year.

Finish strong.

Swimming is very much about finishing strong. It's a very long season, with the whole goal being to beat yourself up throughout most of it only to bring it all together at the end. UR always swims a challenging schedule through the season to continually push themselves and expose themselves to top-flight competition.

And Matt does a terrific job of turning all that hard work into fast speed at just the right time.

Had an opportunity to meet Matt and the team while they were training in Siesta Key,FL over a 10 day stretch in early January during winter break.
Everyone was very, very focused as to the job at hand-win an A-10 Championship.UR is very lucky to have such a dedicated group of student athletes representing the school. And by the way,Matt and his assistants do a great job.Kudos to them all.

SF
Pretty good estimate - looks like the girls exceeded your expectations and should come in around 240 points. 3 more individual A-10 Champions tonight.

Yep, Spiders roll again and can cruise tomorrow, although you know they'll be pushing with everything they've got. Some of the highlights:

400 IM: Kobelja set another meet and pool record, dropping an additional second from her record-breaking performance in the morning session. Spiders also went 3-4-8.

200 Free: Brackett and Titley went head-to-head, with Brackett just eking out the win as both went under 1:50.

100 Back: Hines cruised to victory just off her record time from last year. She has a very good shot at earning an NCAA invitation with her time.

400 Medley Relay destroyed the competition and just squeaked by to set a school, meet, and pool record, beating the record set by the 2009 squad.

Scores at the end of day three:

Richmond 516
Fordham 358.5
La Salle 311
UMass 267
Duquesne 185
URI 182
Bona 169
X 165
GW 163.5
SLU 118

Don't have time for a full recap of the morning session, but the Spiders are rolling yet again. The Spiders have a swimmer in either the first or second position of all four preliminary events from this morning. Scoring out the prelim positions from those events shows UR with 150 points and Fordham at 102.

Women's 3-meter diving prelims are going on right now, and the first couple of heats of the mile will take place at 3:30. So this evening will see finals of the four AM events, diving, the final heat of the 1650 to be matched up against results from this afternoon, and the 400 free relay to cap it all off.

Just waiting on the "Fat Lady". Diving and then the 400 Free Relay. UR up 700 - 485 over Fordham, its next closest competitor.

Mali Kobelja, a sophomore, should win the A-10 Outstanding Swimmer Award and a strong candidate for Rookie of the Meet is Allison Titley. The foundation is strong for more A-10 titles.

Spiders close it out with another win in the 400 free relay.

Spiders finish with 751 points, easily topping Fordham at 557.

H2Okie called it...Kobelja wins most outstanding and Titley wins rookie of the year. Coach of the year award went to La Salle.

UR has won most outstanding swimmer 9 out of the 11 years in the conference, with six different Spiders winning the award.

They've also won rookie of the year 9 out of the 11 years. Pretty incredible when you consider that each swimmer can only win it once (duh), so that means UR is consistently bringing in the top swimmer in the conference year in and year out.

Congratulations on another A10 championship for the Spiders swim team. Outstanding performance!!

NCAA invitations came out yesterday, and Lauren Hines will be representing the Spiders once again in the 100 back (24th) and 200 back (42nd).

Fordham's Brienne Ryan will also be there swimming the same two events.

Lauren Hines just broke her own school record in the 100 back at NCAA's, going 52.59 to take 13th place in the morning session and qualify for finals tonight!

Lauren was a little slower tonight, placing 16th overall and earning a point for the Spiders and honorable mention All-American status.

I believe she is the first Spider to score at NCAA's since Jessica Witt in 2007.

Lauren broke her own school record in the 200 back this morning, dropping it to 1:55.80. It wasn't enough, however, to make it back to finals, placing her in the 26th.

Still a very impressive swim and a nice NCAA meet for Lauren. Now on to Olympic Trials!
