Regardless of the first round opponent, what a great season for our spiders! Undefeated in conference play and tournament champions. That’s what Richmond lacrosse is supposed to be. Would’ve love to have beaten SJU for the A10 tournament as well and not just to win the outright title, but there’s always next year 😉. Also had some big wins against UVA and Georgetown and the 1-goal losses to Cornell and Duke. Glad to see that we belong with the big boys. Let’s make some noise in the tournament!

My reflection on the season. If we could remove the first half, of the first game with Maryland,
we are one of the “big boys”. In the last broadcast on Spider TV , Dom Starsia (retired UVA coach, with
several National Championships) said that he strongly felt that this Spider team could be a national
champion.

I think we are a dark horse candidate this year for the final four. Question will be if Richmond can close it out against the big boys. We have seen way too many leads against them only to lose in the final minute or OT. If Richmond ever gets a top level FOGO on a consistent basis, then the sky is the limit for this program.

If you take Inside Lacrosse's recruiting rankings at face value, we have the #5 face-off man in the country in next year's recruiting class.

That’s a great start. Rankings don’t always translate on the field. If we can win at least 45% of the face-offs against the Maryland’s of this world consistently, I’ll be very excited.

Selection show at 9:30 tonight on ESPNU. I guess the question is, would we rather get an 8 seed and home game but have to face the top seed if we win, or take our chances with a road game that probably gives us a better path to Boston? I feel like we can beat anyone in the tournament.

Personally, I would love the 8 seed even though realistically that isn’t going to happen. Like the women’s basketball team, I think getting over the hump and winning that first NCAA game is huge before thinking about best path to championship weekend. Hosting a home game would be a big help towards that. Still, I think this team could beat any team in the country at any given moment so who we play may not make a huge difference in the end of the day. We were beating a Cornell team who may be the #1 seed in 4th quarter before they came back. The question is whether we can get over the psychological hurdle of closing out a close game against a top team.

We'll be seeded 8 or 9 so it's going to be number 1 if we get by round 1 anyway. Richmond or Chapel Hill is my guess.

2 different bracketology projections today have the Spiders playing at 8 seed Notre Dame. Inside lacrosse bracketology yesterday has the Spiders playing 8 seed UNC. So I think we can say with confidence we will be playing the 7 or 8 seed who will likely be an ACC team.

I thought the bracket was done sort of like the FCS playoff bracket, with some teams seeded but then matchups determined more on geography than the actual ratings of the non-seeded teams. Too lazy to look that up though. But if that's not the way they do it, they might as well just seed all 18 teams. Wouldn't be too hard to do 10 more.

I agree with 1st part for sure. But we have our own pressure. Still looking for that 1st ncaa win. And feeling like we r due or overdue. Sort of like Richmond lady spiders hoops.

Not that I'm suggesting we will win it all, though I think we are very capable, but if we did, I wonder when the last time was in D1 history that a program in any sport won a natty within 11 years of starting its program? I imagine it hasn't happened in baseball, basketball or football. Maybe soccer or some less-known sport?

Georgia Southern won the FCS football title in '85, four years after restarting their program that had been discontinued for 41 years. Then they won it again the following year.

In men's lacrosse, Denver started as a D-II program in '91 and moved to D-I in '99. They won their natty in '15.

Edit: Florida women's soccer also went from nothing to national champion in four seasons, winning it all in '98.

Lets not worry about winning it all before we this program wins its first NCAA tourney game. This program has been knocking on the doorstep since it started, but it has yet to clear the hurdle of winning a first round game.

Like any sport - winning in these events matters, and if UR can beat UNC and then stay competitive with Cornell in round 2, it shows recruits and transfers - this program is ready for next level. Lose in the first round - and we are back to a perennial conference champ who loses first round every year.

Richmond vs. North Carolina

The Spiders won’t be daunted by an ACC opponent; they beat Virginia and took Duke to overtime earlier this season. And they won’t be bothered by the stage; a good chunk of the roster was in the program when Richmond lost in the first round at Virginia in 2023, and some were around for the 2022 near-miss at Penn.

And then there’s the defense, which isn’t fun for anyone to contend with.

There’s also the North Carolina slice of the equation. Does the version of the Tar Heels that won at Syracuse to close the regular season show up? Or the one that faded against Notre Dame in the second half a week before that and got blitzed by Duke in the ACC semifinals?

The Tar Heels have some potent offensive options in Owen Duffy and Dominic Pietramala, but their offense has had its share of struggles over the last four games. Richmond is not a team that is forgiving to offenses trying to rediscover their edge.”

Really like our team. This game will be tough but glad Zach Vigue is from nearby Apex, NC and along with the rest of the team will be prepared for this game. Vigue should have a group of family and friends on hand to cheer him on. We've had good fan support all season...................

The late season losses by UMASS and St Joe's knocked them both out of the top 20 and according to Patrick Stevens below hurt our chances for the number 8 seed as we ended up with 2 top 20 wins. ACC benefits from their late season tournament which pits top 20 teams against each other. 4 of 5 ACC teams made the tournament even with no automatic bid because of not having 6 teams.

What tipped the No. 8 seed to North Carolina?

From the outside, the North Carolina-vs.-Notre Dame comparison looked like it would generate some robust discussion. And it did, with the Tar Heels (10-4) getting the nod over the Fighting Irish (8-4) despite a 12-6 loss at home in a head-to-head matchup last month.

The Tar Heels finished ninth in the RPI, while Notre Dame was 10th. Richmond, at No. 8, was part of the number-crunching as well, and the Spiders will head to Chapel Hill for the tournament’s opening game.

“I think when you look at UNC, it was close,” Colagiovanni said. “They beat Syracuse; Notre Dame lost to Syracuse twice. They had more wins. Richmond was in the mix, too, when you look at their numbers, they were impressive, but they ended up with only two top-20 wins. When we looked at everything together, our decision was to go forward with UNC.”

Had we beaten either Duke or Cornell, we’d be seeded. Had we beaten both, we would be a top 4 seed. It’s all a moot point now. We can only control what’s in front of us. Glad the guys have the mindset that we can achieve more and setting a legacy for the future of UR lacrosse. Hope a good contingency of UR fans makes the 2 hour trip to Chapel Hill. Should be a great one!

Does anyone know what section at the UNC stadium would be behind the UR bench?

It should be like section 23, and a portion of 22. 24 is on the midfield line.

There aren't a ton of seats on that side of the field...section 23 only has four rows but almost entirely available as of right now. Most of the seating and press box are on the other side of the field.

There's a bit of a setback in the middle of the field for equipment and the benches, so if you go for the lower parts of section 22 you'll be a bit lower and closer to the field but you'll kinda be toward the tail end of the bench. 23 puts you in the heart of the bench area and elevated a bit for better viewing, just pulled back a tiny bit.

Tickets for next weekend's NCAA first round are priced at $10 for reserved seating, $8 for general admission, $5 for group rate tickets and $5 for all UNC students. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 am
