This was dumbfounding to me. I'm no lacrosse expert but I've watched a decent number of our games over the years and have never seen a goalie so far out of the net like theirs was, for reasons I don't understand. Why would you bother defending a guy 20 yards from the goal when the ball is on the other side of the field? And why would you keep doing it even after you got burned once for an empty-netter?
I'm glad they did it but it was absurd.
The "theory" behind it is that your team will put so much pressure on the other team attempting to move the ball up the field that they will cough it up. The 10 man "ride" leaves the goalie in the net. When the goalie leaves the net there is usually some desperation reason as in time is running out and unless we get the ball we will lose anyway. Last empty net goal against us that I recall was in a St Joes game as time was about to expire. Taking the goalie out of the net without having at least another defender near rarely works. And as we saw against the Hoos it is a thing of beauty for the scoring team to launch a long range shot that finds the back of the net which we did twice. The UVA ride against us was ineffective as we were able to move the ball upfield. The UVA goalie being out of the net in the waning moments had some reasoning behind it but the other empty net goal was a total head scratcher maneuver by the goalie..............

A season-opening loss to Maryland was transformational. A great team goes back to work. Coach Dan Chemotti and company have reeled off consecutive wins over Robert Morris and Virginia. The win in Charlottesville was a program first and only the second Spider win over their in-state rival in 12 tries.
If you watched on ACCN, you saw a team with a plan—a group of players who balanced playmaking with clock and score implications, and a team that didn’t back down, winning the gritty ground ball plays.
Richmond has a very good defense with Hunter Smith, Mitchell Dunham (LH), and Michael Farrell down low. LSM and captain Tommy Stull was outstanding. SSDM Jack Pilling may be a future PLL pro. Goalie Zach Vigue was sharp and steady when the Cavs pulled within two in the fourth quarter. His work around the cage with GBs and clearing was A+.
Coach Chemotti makes the most of what he has, and while not flashy, Richmond capitalized on UVA mistakes and possessed the ball well. Their shooting was timely. Aidan O’Neil is the quarterback—a two-handed classic X attackman with a variety of moves up each hash. Gavin Creo played a great game in a complementary role, and Max Merklinger is highly skilled and makes good decisions.
Lucas Littlejohn, a Canadian hockey player, has had success hovering in the crease area and scoring on quick sticks and one-touches. Coach told us that depth was a strength, and that was apparent in the final 20 minutes.
Richmond and Saint Joe’s are once again on a collision course in the Atlantic 10 for the AQ. Richmond faces Lehigh next.”

O'Neil did a great job of protecting and passing the ball as his path to the goal was consistently blocked by probably the Hoos best longstick defender who was taller and heavier than O'Neil.

Lehigh men's lacrosse was battle-tested against No. 3 Cornell Saturday morning at the Ulrich Sports Complex, suffering an 18-10 loss to fall to 0-3 on the season.

Survived 9 to 8 ..Lehigh made it tough.....Faceoffs were a tough go.....but Spiders win................
Fortunate to win given how bad we are at the x. Defense played well.

Glad we were able to pull this one out in the end. This was the ultimate trap game. 1) We came off a win against a UVA team, granted their record was better than what UVA will likely be this year. 2) We have top 5 Cornell at home next week. 3) We went into a Lehigh team that is much better than their 0-3 record suggests who is motivated for a win against the #13 team in the country.
How has Chemotti done such a great job in building this program, yet 10 years laters we still struggle with face-offs? One thing to lose badly to the Maryland’s of this world, but we need to do much better against the Lehigh’s of this world. We won 25% of the face offs against them today. That is not good at all.

If we are to have any shot against Cornell we gotta do much better than winning only 25% of the X. 5 v 15.

At UVA we showed improvement and then today the worst of the season to date............
Tough to have to compensate enough in other areas to overcome that weakness.......
We are 3 - 1 which speaks for itself and am sure coaches are trying everything to improve faceoff stats...........

I actually have the same question for the guys who know about the sport/recruiting etc. The question comes from a complete place of ignorance. I know everyone talks about this being essential all the time... and I understand the importance of it from watching and understanding the dynamic of the sport, but I don't understand the dynamic of recruiting/gaps in skill level between the top programs/mid programs/lower level programs, so Id be interested in hearing an answer to this also.
Are there like 5-10 top faceoff guys in the country and then there's a massive drop off and outside of recruiting them out of high school you're just completely screwed? And if that's the case is there any way at all based on how important possession is obviously to overcome this gap? Thanks in advance.

At this point, I’m not even asking us to be competing with the face off guys in the nation’s top programs. I just don’t understand how we lose so badly to teams like Lehigh. Or it seems like St. Joe’s or High Point always find guys at the X who do better than us. I don’t expect us to get the nations top faceoff recruit (though next class Vincent Gaylord is FO guy and #81 in country overall) but we should be getting talented enough FO guys where we win 40%+ against the non elite teams. We do such a good job recruiting and developing literally every other position, which is why this comes as a surprise for me.
I think, though I'm not sure, that the Lehigh head coach was a FO guy when he played and he personally coaches the position at Lehigh. Emphasis is obviously there at Lehigh.
Lehigh almost beat us today because of two position players, their goalie and their face off

not our X men. It’s like recruiting a qb in football, and finding out that he isn’t the level you
hoped for. It’s a tough position and takes certain skills and strength that aren’t that easy to
