We also closed with UMass in a Black Friday game back in 2001 after the original September 15 date was postponed following 9/11. Hadn't remembered that.

Thanks for picking me up. I didn’t see it when I looked, or remember it.

Go Spiders!

There is obviously a W&M person there to steal the trophy. How else does one account for the yellow and green vehicle parked beside the trophy. Theft is the #1 (only?) means of W&M getting the coveted trophy.
That's why all such vehicles at Oregon State are Kubota. Orange, not green and yellow duck colors. My family's three rival teams (UO, Colorado State, W&M) all wear green & gold.

Barty Smith was freight train rolling down hill also.
Yes, back when Barty was in school, there were wooden signs with metal polls that identified the dorms. One Saturday night Barty decided to test his prowess by running through and breaking 5 of those signs. Barty was one tough football player. He was a Spider great. He is a class guy.

Will never forget the beatdown he gave to the WM defensive backs when he ran through them in the 1973 game at WM.

Barty was the rare athlete. During one Greek Week, expanded to allow non-Greeks to participate, he set a school record in the shot put, besting everyone who had ever participated for Richmond's Olympic sports teams. Although he hadn't thrown the shot in a couple of years, in fairness, he had thrown the shot in high school. Came to my HS once to play baseball (excelled there too) and in between innings would run over to thrown the shot....which he won. An all round sports rarity in his era. One of the all time great Spiders.

He scored one TD right in front of our end-zone seats, hit the DB at about the 5-yard line and knocked him into the end zone. Some dude from UR fell out of the back of the grandstand that day and dropped about 15 feet but wasn't hurt at all. As I remember it I wasn't feeling much pain either than day; I had a friend from my hometown who went to W&M and we all went to a friend's frat house for the postgame.

I remember him running thru our high school football team. I remember seeing literally 7 or 8 players being carried an additional 8 or 9 yards after initial contact.

After we won the national championship in 2008, I asked Barty if the '08 team was the best UR football team we ever had. He laughed and said no way, not by a long shot.

There may be a glimmer of hope over on the Reservation. But in trolling their message board... we see some depressing comments:

"Chance to make them share the CAA title. Chance to tie the series back up. Chance to end the season, and a few remarkable careers, on a high note. Chance to win the Capital Cup. Chance to put on tape for NFL scouts, and roster spots next season. A lot to play for this weekend." [it is sad to see what they have fallen to]

"This is our chance to bring some shine to the program after a remarkably disappointing season. Let’s kick UR’s butt as they fully walk out the CAA door, give our ‘25 recruits a shot in the arm, and send our departing [edit: I think he means their "dearly departed"] on their way on a high note."

"Jim Mora is screaming in my ear as I type. Maybe a win tomorrow also means that the season is not over."

"I agree that Richmond has had a bunch of tight wins against underwhelming teams (which is one reason that I am hopeful for the Tribe this weekend)."

"I also think that the fact that W&M was not one of the four unranked teams to move into the Top 25 tells us all that we need to know about how we will be treated by the committee (assuming we beat Richmond). Our only hope is that we win and New Hampshire loses and it wouldn't hurt if one or more of N. Arizona, UT Martin, and E. Kentucky also lose. Then the committee would be forced to take us."

Remember it well. I was in those stands as well.

Wood and 72, I was there also
I was also there in the end zone! That was a crazy accident. The angels were looking over that Spider that day!

If I recall correctly, the Spiders were still feeling a little ornery that day from the tough loss to ECU two games earlier. In my opinion that was the best pre FCS Richmond team ever, and sadly we didn't even win the SOCON Championship.

Go Spiders!

Let's get the Spider's last CAA season done with an undefeated conference record.

A hard fought battle is a given. W&M playing for a possible playoff slot with a convincing win. This along with Loudon's ability to motivate players. Going to come out foaming at the mouth (overplay and too much emotion can lead to big plays). Hit them long early.

Spiders, play your game, 1-0 this week. Win and chances of a first round playoff bye increase, win big chances even better. Lot to play for just as with the Tribe.

Who proves they can run consistently early, should be a clue to the outcome. See this as a line play game, most tough ones are. If comes down to passing, give Cam advantage over Wilson.

Worthy opponent with much to play for in a a rivalry game, but believe we have the better team. Spiders 27 - Tribe 21.

Go Spiders!
