To whom it may concern at Fordham: Do you have any more Hall of Fame head coaches you can send us?

please don't bring the "seven blocks of granite" with you to The Brick House...

ha! seriously I think it's great to play these guys instead of a MEAC or Big South opponent...and even more fun to play them in something besides basketball...

if you are a very serious Spiders football fan you might recall the only time we played them...I can only remember, it was raining cats and dogs...I think!

enjoy the Countdown...

in respect for Vince Lombardy...Go Spiders!

In an uncommon twist, the University of Richmond came out of its game against an FBS opponent in better physical shape than it entered.

The Spiders did not suffer serious injuries in Saturday night’s 42-13 loss at Virginia, and UR coach Russ Huesman projected he will get some players back this week who were unavailable because of injuries.

Richmond finished with 34 rushing yards. Missing was Xavier Goodall, a junior from Henrico High who led the Spiders in rushing last season (452 yards). Goodall suffered a knee injury late in preseason practice.

“He’s probably the one that may not be ready to play [Saturday] against Fordham, but we’ll get [other players] back,”said Huesman.

Richmond’s only touchdown at U.Va. came on an interception and 72-yard return by linebacker Dale Matthews. Two field goals “is not good enough offensively, and [the Spiders] know that,” said Huesman. “We’ll figure out ways to get them in really good positions. Virginia had eight starters back from a pretty good defense last year.”

Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson, redshirted last year, completed 11 of 28 for 194 yards and threw a pair of interceptions.

“What we have to do moving forward is just get behind Kevin, support Kev, and we all need to do better with the details, details in our routes, details in our plays, details in the run game, especially,” said Tyler Wilkins, a senior from L.C. Bird High who made four catches for 75 yards. “We just have to finish plays, and finish drives."

The visit of Fordham (0-1) on Saturday (6 p.m.) will be the second meeting of the programs after a historic tie on Oct. 21, 1995. The Spiders and Rams, playing in Bronx, N.Y., finished 3-3. In competition involving an FCS scholarship program, Richmond played the last tie game prior to the 1996 NCAA implementation of overtime for all divisions.

Some FCS leagues played OT in 1995. In FCS non-conference games, OT wasn't used. UR was in the Yankee Conference, which did play OT. Fordham is in the Patriot League.

Jack Coffey Field was essentially the outfield of the Rams' baseball diamond, and also used by other Fordham sports. The playing surface, replaced in 2005 by artificial turf, didn't have much grass by the time the Spiders arrived. Hard rain quickly turned the field to mud and deep puddles. Jason Gabrels, who was Richmond’s quarterback, ran on one of the game's first plays.

"I was at the bottom of the pile, underwater," he recalled years later. "I honestly thought I was going to drown getting tackled in a football game."

An official spotted the ball after one play and it floated a few yards. Puddle location factored into play-calling. Fordham kicked a first-quarter field goal. Richmond kicked one in the fourth.

"This day and that field were not made for man nor beast," UR coach Jim Reid said after the game.

The Rams, picked to finish third in the Patriot League, were beaten 34-10 at Charlotte Saturday. The game that finished at 11:26 p.m., after lightning delays. Fordham allowed 488 yards. Charlotte was seven for 15 on third-down opportunities

standing room only crowd, but remind me who won the game

I couldn't see or listen to the UVA game, traveling, the stats make it look like we struggled to stop the run. Is that accurate?

Yes. While it seemed like we had men in position, we struggled to make tackles.

Richmond QB Kevin Johnson, talented targets seek consistency after hit-and-miss opener
JOHN O'CONNOR·35 minutes ago

Richmond and Virginia were tied 7-7 midway through the first quarter last Saturday. The Spiders faced a third-and-three at the Cavaliers' 25.

Tyler Wilkins ran a seven-yard route in the middle of the field and turned back toward the line, with no U.Va. defender around him.

Kevin Johnson's pass sailed over Wilkins by a few feet, incomplete. Frustrated, Johnson squatted and put both hands on his helmet. He knew he missed an opportunity to set up Richmond with a first down in the red zone.

Earlier on that drive, which ended with a field goal, Johnson scrambled for five yards and hit Wilkins with a 17-yard completion, all part of Richmond's inconsistent evening in a 42-13 loss. The Spiders (0-1) will try to debug their offense Saturday against Patriot League member Fordham (0-1) at Robins Stadium.

Johnson, a junior who redshirted last season, completed 11 of 28 for 194 yards, with two fourth-quarter interceptions. He hadn't participated in a game since the 2016 FCS playoffs, and dealt with an ACC defense that returned eight starters.

The Spiders failed to score an offensive touchdown. Their only TD came on a 72-yard interception return by linebacker Dale Matthews.

"We obviously wanted to win, but we saw a lot of improvement during the game," said Johnson. "I think we'll just get better from here."

Johnson rated his performance as "OK," which is about how his coach, Russ Huesman, saw it. Johnson was occasionally impressive, less than that at other times, according to Huesman.

Six of Johnson's 11 completions gained 16 or more yards. He showed mobility. He didn't look rattled at any point to Huesman. Also, room for growth was evident.

"I think Kevin knows he has to play better than that, and he will. He's a good player," said Huesman. "He did a lot of good things. But you want to make sure at that position that you're doing a lot of great things."

Johnson's performance dictates the extent to which Richmond can engage its top offensive players: receivers Wilkins, Cortrelle Simpson, and Dejon Brissett. Each made all-CAA last season, Brissett on the first team and Simpson and Wilkins on the second team.

"I think we still have a lot of things we need to work on, the chemistry between the three of us and Kevin," said Wilkins, who made four receptions for 75 yards at U.Va. "It's hard when you have three great receivers like that, all working [together]. Not necessarily please everybody, because we're all here for the team, but it can be tough at times."

Johnson said Richmond's general game plan involves determining which receiver has the most advantageous match-up, and then delivering the ball in that direction. Consistently.

"They challenged us to throw and we had some opportunities. Some, we didn't. It was partly them," Huesman said, speaking of the Cavaliers. "But partly us, too."

Need to work on "the chemistry between the three of us and Kevin". Wasnt that handled in Winter/Spring/ Summer? Not intending to be critical, but find that comment unsettling. Should already be there.

Pretty sure those quotes are 6-months old...is this your first time reading an RTD article?!?!? ;)

Hope the weather holds up. Not sure that we’re built as well for bad weather games. Not to mention attendance
