12/30 - St. Joe's...what is the chance game is played?

Hardt and others will forget this beating by March. String together half a dozen of these and maybe you have some chance for change but it’s so slim you’d need a microscope to find it.

What an embarrassment. We flat out suck. 6-33 from 3 is so bad that a random guy off the street could do better.

Losing by 27 to a garbage St. Joe’s team might be the worst result since I’ve been a Spider. Take away scholarships, start the walk-ons, send a ****ing message

Since Mooney has arrived, we’ve always been a finesse team. However, the successful ones have had individual players with grit and balls (starting with Gonzo) that has kept the team accountable effort wise (cause Mooney doesn’t).

For this group, it’s looking more and more like that person was Blake Francis. Without him, we’re back to purely finesse basketballl. When everything clicks and we’re making shots, we’ll win. When someone muddies up the game and punches us in the mouth (aka Bob Huggins basketball), we’ll always lose.

Nathan around here we call that fluidity

Nathan, absolutely correct. When you had player led toughness (Gonzo, ka, butler, k smith) it works. When you don't this is the result. It seemed one team stayed on holiday break and one team was fully invested.

I think Zay has that quality, but still offensively challenged which doesn't work great with Gilly's shooting woes.

27.8% on field goal attempts and 18% on 3 point attempts does not win basketball games. Shooting drills should be mandatory for two hours as soon as the final buzzer sounds. Sadly our coaching staff does not show any "tough love" mentality.

True. But as bad as offense was, the defense was worse. There are games we can make up for typically weak defense by scoring on offense. But the usual poor defense, no blocking out on boards, lots of 2nd chance points by opponents coupled with no offense from us is a formula for a guaranteed loss.

Did Gilly only come back to break the steals record?

So you're telling me the defense was even worse than the offense - will have to add post game defensive drills to the post game offensive drills. And just when I was thinking it couldn't get any worse........................!

Yep. Defense equally as bad as offense last night. But piss poor defense is nothing new. After the Drake loss Mooney alluded to us potentially having a really good defense this year. Don't tell us; show us. He must be speaking to himself. His crappy defensive strategies & schemes are a major liability. Teams exploit his defensive strategies regularly. We can defend soft teams (Northern Iowa, Davidson, etc.), but any physical team has their way with us (ODU, St Joe's, probably St L., etc). There is no such thing in Mooney World Of Basketball as to defending the paint.

Maybe Joe’s will have to forfeit due to their guys wearing their masks around their chins.
What exactly was the point of that “mask wearing”? Are those players ones that are not vaccinated? We can argue all day about the effectiveness of masks, but I think everyone can agree that the St. Joe’s “masking” was futile.

Maybe it was an effective mind trick? I mean it's not like we got particularly close to them while we were playing defense. Could have been fear of contracting the virus from the poorly masked players?

Fear that they might catch what we've got?

Go Spiders!

The mask wearing was to "ward off" playing the same way the Spiders play and it clearly worked..................

Yes - no doubt about that - the physical act of getting between the opposing player and the basket happens rarely as often we literally get out of the way. We do have a few players who are willing to take the contact but the concept of clogging the lanes and/or getting in position for a rebound is rare. And yes one way to measure defense is the offensive prowess of the other team and the Hawks were 52% from the field when coming into the game they were in the 46% or so range.

The Gilyard slander is utter bullshit. Get the **** out of here with that
