Richmond Unveils the Spiders' 2018 Lacrosse Schedule
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – After a record breaking 2017 season and a trip to the program's seventh Atlantic 10 Championship game in the last eight years, University of Richmond women's lacrosse head coach Allison Kwolek has announced the Spiders' 2018 schedule.

"I'm excited about the mix of teams we are seeing this spring," Kwolek said. "We'll face some familiar rivals, and our non-conference schedule will prepare us for A-10 play."

The Spiders will face many familiar foes in 2018, with multiple repeat opponents from last season including 2017 NCAA Tournament participants Virginia, James Madison and Massachusetts. The season kicks off at home on February 10 when the Campbell Camels come to town for the programs' second all-time meeting.

Following a road stint to face American (Feb. 17) and Virginia (Feb. 21), the squad returns home to host Liberty on March 3 in a rematch of last year's season opener.

The Spiders then hit the road to face Old Dominion on March 10 before heading to Worcester, Massachusetts, to take on Holy Cross for the first time since 2000 on March 13. A trip down the road to James Madison wraps up nonconference road play on March 17.

William & Mary comes to town on March 24 for the 40th meeting between the two programs, before the Spiders open conference play at home against crosstown rival VCU on March 29. A-10 play continues at Duquesne (March 31) and Saint Joseph's (April 6), before George Washington comes to Robins Stadium on April 8.

A road trip to Davidson on April 13 leads the Spiders into a three-game A-10 home stint, when the squad will play host to George Mason (April 15), Massachusetts (April 20) and La Salle (April 22).

The Spiders wrap up regular-season play on April 28 with a trip to Olean, New York, to face St. Bonaventure.

The 2018 Atlantic 10 Tournament is set for May 3-6, when Richmond will look to win the conference title on its home turf at Robins Stadium.

Great job by the lady Spiders who were the bright spot of today!

It looks like Sam Greisenbach didn't play. Any word as to why? She was A10 rookie of the year last year. Big player for us

WLax dominated American for another win today. Egizi had 7 goals.

Sam Greierbach is out with a season ending injury. She was a very good player for us last year, but Spiders still have a prolific offense without her

Sciandra Named A-10 Player of the Week

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond women's lacrosse junior Katie Sciandra has been named the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week following a breakout performance this past weekend.

This is the third Player of the Week award for the program this season, and Sciandra's first weekly award of her career.

The Vienna, Va., native scored a career-high seven goals and assisted on one other for an eight-point performance in the Spiders' 12-8 win over Liberty on Saturday. Her eight points nearly tripled her previous career high of three.

Sciandra scored six of her goals on free position attempts, and has scored 10 goals on the year after totaling 11 all of last season. She took a career-high 14 shots in the contest, 12 of which were on goal.

WORCESTER, Mass. – A little cold weather doesn't faze the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team.

The Spiders started slow offensively on Monday afternoon, but scored seven-straight goals and saw goalie Megan Gianfortemake a season-high 15 saves to roll past host Holy Cross, 11-4.

The Crusaders started the scoring with a free position goal less than two minutes into the game, but Aly Fries evened things up just over a minute later.

Neither team would score for the next 15 minutes, as both defenses took over the game. Kim Egizi finally put the Spiders ahead with her 21st goal of the year, and Holy Cross responded less than 30 second later to even things at 2-2.

The two teams continued to trade goals, but Marissa Brown, Katie Sciandra and Fries each scored to give the Spiders a 5-3 edge at the break.

The Spiders heated up in the second half, outscoring the Crusaders 6-1. Julia Schmuckler started the scoring just over 13 minutes into the half, before Sciandra scored her second of the day to make it 7-3. Brown then scored twice in a row to extend the lead and log the hat trick.

Holy Cross looked to make a comeback in the closing minutes, but Julie Ball intercepted a long pass and transitioned the ball into the offensive end, where Egizi assisted Schmuckler for the 10-3 lead.

The Crusaders' lone goal of the half came with under three minutes to play, but Sciandra scored her third goal of the day and 19th of the season to wrap up the game.

Gianforte's 15 saves on the day were just one shy of tying her career high. Gianforte also led the team with six ground balls, while Ball caused a team-high four turnovers. Egizi moves into fifth all-time in career points at Richmond with her four points on the day.

The Spiders return to action this Saturday, March 17, when they travel to Harrisonburg to take on No. 5 James Madison. Game time is set for 1 p.m

Records Fall as Spiders Down VCU, 21-11

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=205365

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team had its hands full on Thursday night against crosstown rival VCU, but junior Katie Sciandra would have none of it.

The junior scored a program-record nine goals, leading the Spiders to a 21-11 win at Robins Stadium. Her nine tallies are the most since Mary Flowers scored eight against American in 2011. She finished the game 7-for-7 from free position.

"Katie was clearly incredible tonight," head coach Allison Kwolek said after the win. "It's no surprise to us because that's what we see from her every day, but to see her score nine goals in one game was just fun to watch. There have been so many great players to come though this program over the years, but no one has ever scored nine goals in a game until Katie did tonight."

Senior Caroline Queally also posted a program first in the game, winning 10 draw controls to become the first Spider in program history to win 300 draws.

"Three hundred draw controls is an incredible milestone," Kwoleksaid of Queally. "Caroline has put a lot of extra work into that skill. Her ability on the draw makes a huge difference for us and is a tremendous advantage to our team."

Sciandra opened the scoring just under three minutes in, but VCU rebounded with a goal of its own less than a minute later. Sciandra and Julia Schmuckler each scored again, both from the free position mark, but VCU's Molly Barcikowski scored twice in a row to tie things at 3-3.

The Spiders quickly turned things around and saw Sciandra, Kim Egizi, Marissa Brown and Aly Fries score four-straight goals in a two-minute period to extend the lead to four.

The Rams scored once again, but Richmond would go on to score three of the final goals of the half, including the first career goal from Madison Ostrick, to take a 10-5 lead into the break.

VCU came out strong in the second half, cutting the lead to two on three separate occasions, but Sciandra broke things open with three-straight tallies to spark a six-goal scoring outburst by the Spiders.

The Rams would go on to score once more, but Egizi scored twice and Sophia Madsen logged her first career goal to make the final score 21-11.

The Spiders will now hit the road and travel to face A-10 foe Duquesne on Saturday, March 31. Game time in Pittsburgh is set for 12pm.

Spiders Remain Perfect in A-10 Play with 19-10

http://richmondspiders.com/boxscore.aspx?path=wlax&id=7050

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team faced a determined Duquesne squad on Saturday afternoon, but the duo of Kim Egizi and Marissa Brown were too much for the host Dukes.

A career-high eight goals from Egizi and 10 points from Brown would send the Spiders past the Dukes, 19-10. Egizi finished the game with nine points, while Brown tallied five goals and five assists in the win.

The Spiders opened the game with two quick goals from Katie Trainerand Brown, but Duquesne bounced back with three-straight goals of their own to take the lead.

Richmond rebounded with four goals over the next 10 minutes, including one each from Katie Sciandra and Aly Fries and two from Egizi, before the Dukes stopped the Spider run with their final goal of the half.

Egizi and Brown closed the half with a goal apiece in the closing minutes to both total four points heading into the break.

Duquesne scored early in the second stanza to cut into the Spider lead, but two more goals from Egizi gave Richmond a 10-5 advantage less than five minutes into the half. The two teams then traded goals, with Caroline Queally and Brown each scoring from free position to maintain the five-goal lead.

Egizi kept the pressure on, scoring twice more to match her career high of seven goals, and Sciandra scored her second of the day following a Duquesne goal to give the Spiders a 15-9 advantage.

Brown added two more goals to tie her career high of five, and Egizi scored once more to post a new career high to extend the lead, before senior defender Carolyn Chambers scored her first career goal to make it 19-9.

The Dukes scored again to stop the running clock with just under seven minutes to play, but it wouldn't be enough as the Spiders went on to take the 19-10 win and move to 2-0 in A-10 play.

Queally and Egizi won nine and eight draw controls on the day, respectively, to give the Spiders a 20-10 advantage at the draw. Egizi's first draw control win of the day was the 200th of her career, making her just the third Spider ever to hit the mark. She now has 207 and moves into send place all-time behind Queally, who now has 316.

Late Goal Lifts Spiders to 9-8 Win Over Davidson
Women's Lacrosse
Posted: 04/13/2018
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team took things down to the wire on Friday night in a defensive battle.

Katie Sciandra's fourth goal of the game proved to be the difference maker, as the junior scored with just 2:14 remaining in the game to lead the Spiders to a 9-8 road win over Davidson.

Sciandra started the scoring for the Spiders, logging two goals in the opening minutes to jumpstart the offense. She then assisted Madison Ostrick to extend the lead, before Katie Trainer scored off of a quick pass from Rachel Ziemba for an early four-goal advantage.

The Wildcats used a timeout to spark a run of their own, scoring twice in the next three minutes to cut the lead in half. Kim Egizi would score to make it 5-2, but another Davidson goal before the end of the half sent the Spiders into the break with a 5-3 lead.

Davidson opened the second half with another goal, but two quick scores from Ziemba and Egizi gave the Spiders some breathing room. Egizi's second goal of the day was the 229th point of her career, putting her in a three-way tie for third all-time at Richmond.

The two teams would trade goals again, as Sciandra scored her third of the day for the hat trick, but Davidson would not go away, scoring three in a row to tie the game at 8-8.

With just over two minutes to play, Sciandra was fouled to earn a free position attempt, and sent the ball past Davidson's Delaney Guhman for the eventual game-winner.

Julie Ball led the Spiders with five draw controls, while she and Carolyn Chambers both caused a game-high three turnovers. Five Spiders finished the game with three ground balls.

The Spiders have a quick turnaround, as they will now travel home to host George Mason on Sunday afternoon. Game time at Robins Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

Gianforte’s 14 saves key difference maker.UMass had 35 fouls.Nothing new.Clever but aggressive way to stop UR momentum.Minutewomen have been doing it for years. They are coached that way-not cleanly.

Castagnero stepped up today with 4 goals. Her size and ball handling skills inside caused matchup problems for UMass.Kim Egizi’s 4 goals including game winner was pretty pedestrian for her.Thats how good she is.

This is great, saw the haltime score and was hoping for the W. Great win for the ladies!

An added bonus, I was at a h.s. graduation party, and a lady I know in my town was telling me all about the championship vs Umass last year,. She has two daughters on the Umass team this year. I am guessing I won't hear about this one.

UNIVERISTY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team has learned its fate following Sunday's Atlantic 10 Championship game overtime win over UMass.

The Spiders will now head to Towson, Maryland for the first round of the 2018 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships to take on Northwestern, who received an at large bid out of the Big Ten Conference.

The Spiders and Wildcats will face off on Friday, May 11, at a time to be announced, with the winner advancing to face the winner of the first round game between No. 7 seed and host Towson and the winner of the play-in game between Mercer and Wagner. This is the eighth meeting between the programs and first since 2002 when the Spider took a 13-6 win on the road. Richmond holds a 5-2 advantage all time in the series.

The DI women's lacrosse championship is a 26-team field, where the top six seeds will receive an automatic bye into the second round of the tournament. The first and second round matchups will be hosted by the top 8 seeds in the tournament, while the quarterfinals will be held at the higher-seeds' home field.

Richmond won the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament title in dramatic fashion, posting a 12-11 overtime victory over nine-time defending champion Massachusetts at Robins Stadium. A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Kim Egizi scored the game-winning goal just 35 seconds into the overtime period, capping her Most Outstanding Player performance in the tournament, while Megan Gianforte, Marissa Brown, Mia Castagnero and Julie Ball were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

This marks the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance for the Spiders and the first since 2007. Richmond made three-straight appearances from 2005-07, with its last coming against No. 6 North Carolina 11 years ago.

The Spiders' 16 win this season are tied for the most in program history with the 16-4 finish in 2006.

Just extended Coach Kwolek for another 5 years--great work to lock her down after last year's run. Anyone know if Chemotti is in line for an extension as well?

I just hope this extension is not one that follows the unsuccessful path as Mooney did after his extension. The girls program has
been competitive but needs to consistently be beating UMASS more often for the title if we are going to be frequent flyers in the NCAAs.
