Why Cayo may return

There is a very good chance we will have some of the seniors returning next year. Last year we had 100% of our scholarship seniors return and it’s a very low probability that zero return next year. The reasons each player may return are different, but the one overriding factor is that they like the school, our basketball program and especially the coach. I am going to focus this post specifically on why Cayo might return.

Cayo is probably headed to Europe for his professional career, where there is a huge difference in pay depending on what league you play in and how good you are. There is a possibility that this year’s contracts are much lower than normal due to the loss of ticket revenue.

Cayo has improved ever year he has been on the team and finished this season very strong. Over his last 7 games he has been averaging close to 6 rebounds and 15 points a game. If he comes back another year he has a chance to make one of the all-conference teams. He would also have a chance to improve his mid and long range shooting that could significantly increase his value over in Europe. It was amazing how much he improved his free throw average by focusing on it and no reason he can’t also do it with other outside shots. If he can get his outside shot down, he will be a force to reckon with.

Finally, you can’t play basketball your whole like. A free graduate degree is a great investment in the future.

I think Cayo returns mostly because I don’t know that he projects as a strong overseas candidate yet and he’s a four year only guy. I’d gladly take him back.

Cayo is the most likely player to return for 3 reasons to me.
1) He plays a position in great need next year. Mooney will be recruiting him to stay.
2) His family appreciates academics over sports, so he is likely interested in an advanced degree.
3) He has developed each year at Richmond and is a true senior (been at UR 4 years).

Come on Nathan! Please let us know your coming back. With an improved 10 foot jump shot you will be unstoppable, help take us to the NCAA, make all-conference and headed for a great career.

And he’s back. Let’s go, Cay-O
