Noticed Peter was not at practice yesterday. Maybe he missed for a reason or is there something more to this?

Yoder is off the team. Understand issues other than football involved.

Next man up and folks how does the backup kicker look this Spring? Helkowski I understand could also kick if
asked to.

From what I saw last Saturday, the kicker we have has a strong leg. The longest attempt was about 37 yards and he made it easily. One kick was blocked and two of the kicks came out low. It would be great if we had someone who can make all extra points and hit from 40 yards in consistently!

Losing all conference kicker because of non football issues = bad omen

Henrico kid who elected to graduate from ODU this year and move on.

Do they update the roster this time of year? It's for the 2015 season, which is over, so I assume they don't bother changing anything until they publish a 2016 roster.

This ends our speculation:

Griff Looks Good

Rising sophomore kicker Griffin Trau was the star of Thursday’s practice, going perfect in field goals and extra points.

Trau, who was used solely for kickoffs last season for the Spiders, will step into the leading kicking role this fall. In Thursday’s practice, the Culver, Ind. native booted two field goals from 40+ to send the offensive unit into a frenzy.

I heard this kid Segers can boot it!! He got injured at ODU and only had the chance to kick 3 fg's last year. Great height on kickoffs and fg's from what I've heard, so the speculation may continue.

I don't know about you, but I'll be losing a ton of sleep if this kid from FBS powerhouse ODU doesn't spend his redshirt senior year with us...

Wow. Look at the attendance at Rice for the odu game. Rivals the "crowds" at the Vegas 8 event!

If ODU can keep the locals from going to UVA, Va Tech, Florida, Fla State etc they have a chance of eventually becoming really good. Big if though.

Spiderbacker I hear you when you say you wouldn't lose sleep is Segers doesn't play for Richmond. Since I have an advantage of knowing Segers leg strength and skills, I will simply say that getting Segers to attend UR for the coming year as we try to move further up the ladder in FCS would be TREMENDOUS Get.

My son worked out with Segers for two years under the guidance of Todd Covington in Williamsburg. He will consistently generate touchbacks and he has field goal range well into the 50s on a reliable basis (and if needed, he could challenge Helkowski on punts or certainly be a terrific back up).

If Ricky can avoid injury, he has a chance to play beyond his college years. Covington indicated Segers was a pro prospect 3 years ago. Don't be fooled by his ODU choice for college. He was injured from a soccer injury his junior high school year and got some late looks. He went to a post high school combine and it was either Florida or FSU that said had they known about him earlier, they would have offered.

3 years ago, Segers and his dad were interested in transferring to UR but nothing happened and we brought in Yoder. Ricky's family lives in the Deep Run school district but played for Henrico.

Counselor: Thanks for the intel on Segers. Moving up the ladder in FCS, at least from my perspective, boils down to beating the Bison. That said, NDSU had one of the worst kickers in all of Division I football in 2015... on its way to yet another Championship!

There are a great many good kickers (measured by a number of metrics) out there...some known, and others not so well known. Either way, very few kickers are true "difference-makers" beyond their high school years. Most who make it to the college level are capable of hitting a reasonably high percentage of FGs, cashing in almost every PAT, and hitting the ball at least a couple of yards deep into the end zone if asked to do so (though some return guys like W&M's Dedmon can be counted on to haul it out as far back as 9 yards deep -- that's 75 yards in the air to keep it out of his hands -- a pretty tall order). For various reasons, kickers are the last guys to be recruited and the last guys to get scholarships because coaches can't get too excited about them -- at least until they have to make a big kick with a game on the line! While good kickers are far from "a dime a dozen," take a quick look at the following three guys who have been among the top rated high school kickers in Virginia in the past two years - (1) David Cooper (Bishop Ireton), (2) Liam Hedge (Woodberry Forest), and (3) Thomas Cottrell (St. Christopher's) and tell me what they are up to? So that's why I can't get too excited about a one-semester redshirt senior kicker who doesn't look like Sebastian Janikowski...

P.S.- For those who have read this far and don't feel like doing the Google searches:
Cooper made multiple 50+ FGs this past season, had a record number of FGs, even made SI's "Faces in the Crowd," but was told that he would have to get in on his own to NAVY (no football help)... Hedge had lots of interest (even Notre Dame), but wound up kicking at Hampden-Sydney...while fellow 2014 All-State kicker Cottrell is Hedge's backup at HSC

With the parity in the CAA, kickers are difference makers. We have had some big misses in the recent past. I still cringe thinking about losing to Villanova in 2009. A missed extra point on our last td in the fourth quarter put us behind by one point, then a missed 35 yarder at the end cost us a victory........ and ending our 17 game win streak, #1 ranking, and #1 seed in the playoffs and potentially another national title. We have also suffered with returnable kickoffs paired with lousy return coverage over the past few years. Yoder was just coming around in that area. Say what you want, I think a good kicker is very important in our league. Sure NDSU had a lousy kicker last year, but they so dominated their opponents (including Richmond), they didn't need a good kicker. This year may be different for them.

...and Richmond dominated William & Mary (Tribe had both the finest kicker and finest return guy in the CAA) with a redshirt freshman kicker and a coaching strategy to keep the ball out of Dedmon's hands. Didn't mean to say good kickers can't be difference-makers, just that there are plenty of good kickers these days who can do the job who aren't getting noticed/scholarships... The select few who receive scholarship offers (FBS or FCS) are the guys who can consistently hit the ball ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE END ZONE -- that's 75 yards on-the-fly! Anything short of that will, as you stated, depend on the play of your coverage team. Perhaps you will remember when a young Mike Rocco led UVA to an upset victory over Penn State. The goat that day was the PSU kicker who missed a PAT and FOUR (4) FGs...Sam Ficken turned out to be one of the best FBS kickers over his BIG 10 career. Again, if Sebastian Janikowski could convince the NCAA to let him spend a fall semester on Westhampton Way, that would call for a healthy degree of excitement!!!!!

Finally get a decent kicker for first time and lose him. First season in years we didn't have to hold our breath on every extra point

Good news, but I felt our kicking game was much improved on Saturday

We are all in this year and Coach Rocco is putting everything in place to make a big run in 2016. His specialty will be to kick the ball in the end zone and eliminate kick returns. I like competition and options at every position.

I'm excited to announce that I've accepted a full scholarship to continue my football career and begin my graduate studies at the University of Richmond. I'm extremely thankful for this opportunity and cannot wait to start this next chapter of life. Shoutout to @43forthefans for the photo edit!!!

Wow ...I didn't know Brian Brown was giving up his number for this guy. And am particularly curious about the new rules for this year that allow an opponent to come after the kicker from behind on a kick-off. He better get a new editor!

I believe that picture is from when he was with ODU and it looks like their kickoff team. He somehow got that picture changed from an ODU uniform to a Richmond one.

he tweeted his thanks to a ODU related company for the shot

Was it me on did the punter look a little slow kicking the ball. I know they didn't want the defender to try and block the punt but it looked like he could have.

Nothing appeared to have changed on the punting front.Surprised that weren't any blocked on Saturday and,of course, last season.
