What should we realistically expect for Richmond Basketball?

We are in the A-10. We moved up to this conference with the hope of getting more at large bids. So far, in the many years in this league, we’ve only received one. The Robins Center is an amazing facility in this league. Are we really all in on this goal? Is a finesse team the only type of team we can expect at our school? I’m frustrated. I’m frustrated that fans can accept a loss to a team like Radford with our so called aspirations to win at large bids to the NCAA’s. Is it really all just a pipe dream?

at-larges to non-P6 teams seems to have been reducing recently and I think the NET is set up to continue the trend.

We've had as many at-large bids in the CAA as we've had in the A10. At least there we had realistic opportunities to win the league title every year. Based on what I've seen over the last 15 years, we could have probably won the CAA 6 or 7 times.

So are we trying now to make the argument that we shouldn't expect at-large bids because of the net ranking system? Come on - all you need to do is look down the road from UR at VCU. Since VCU joined the A10 - they have made the NCAA 6 out of 7 years. Only once did they win the A10 tourney. So you could say they out of 7 years - they have gotten 5 at large bids. So yes - we should expect at-large bids. Clearly not at the frequency of VCU because they are a level above us at this point - but they have proven you can get at-large bids from the A10 on a regular basis. And they on track/on bubble right now for a bid this year.

Count me among those very few who enjoyed his brand of basketball.

The win over Kansas under Wainwright at The Phog is up there with the win over Syracuse under Tarrant at College Park in the NCAA tournament as being among the best victories ever for the Spiders!

Yes it does seem like it is becoming more stacked against non p6 teams to get an at large. BUT, on the other hand the A10 is a league that gets them. We need to be a consistent top 4 team and they can be acheived. Need to start with this season.
Vcu gets an at large almost every year.

Yes, many of us thought VCU's success would be some sort of motivator for Mooney and our Spiders, but just seems to lead to more excuses. Instead of striving to be a Gonzaga, or Wichita State, or VCU some of us just give a nod to excuses, or that these are outliers, etc. As the saying goes, “Shoot for the moon (no pun intended). Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” We shoot to compete.

It was ugly offense but I loved our rugged defense and his play anyone anywhere mentality. Give me a coach who instills a sense of hard tough nosed play every single day over this soft pansy ass rhythm philosophy of Mooney.

Oh never mind. Realistic Expectation is to go into most every season with at least the hope of an at large. I think that reaching that goal every 3 to 4 years is very realistic for our program. Coach Mooney is not on that schedule anymore.

For the facilities we have and what we pay our coach absolutely we should expect more. Regularly getting nit and occasional NCAA (say 2 out of 5/6 years). Offering CM a 10 year deal has and is killing us.

My expectation would be in contention (which means come selection sunday we are at least on the bubble or close to it). We should be playing in the NCAA or NIT 3 out of 4 years. By getting into either tourney - your basically saying we have one of the top 100 programs in the country in any given year.
What do I think the administration expectation is? Good kids and Good students, win more than we lose, and about every 5-6 years, we should be in contention for a bid.
