Buckle your seat belt, because you are about to learn the top 12 reasons why you will be making one of the biggest mistakes of your like if you do not come to Richmond.

  1. Top Academic Institution providing paid internships and international experience opportunities for all students including student athletes; Top ranked Business School. There is a direct correlation between how good a University is academically and how much money the average graduate makes during their careers.

  2. A10 is a top Basketball Conference; Excellent TV deal & national exposure

  3. The Robins Center is one of the nicest basketball arenas in the A10

  4. Loyal fan base, ranks 3rd in the A10 for average attendance of approximately 6,500 per game, despite recent off year

  5. University has committed to having a high quality Basketball team

  6. Building new $15 million state of the art basketball practice facility

  7. In the past 17 years we have had 24 players have go on to play professional basketball

  8. Young team that has improved significantly during the season. Top 7 players are coming back. Should be in a very good position for post season play each of the next couple of years, especially with your help!

  9. Rank as having one of the most beautiful campuses in the US

  10. Great city with warm weather

  11. One of the top fitness centers for students in the country plus warm climate, means high proportion of girls in great shape

  12. Strong alumni network to help get jobs when basketball career is over
I like how one of the U of R staff sums it up “You are in this position because you have worked hard to be the best student and the best athlete possible. When deciding on a college, make sure to choose the University that will insure you leave as one of the most sought after college graduates in the country and that you have reached your highest level as an athlete. To choose a school that only addresses one side of who you are is wasting the tremendous work and sacrifice that has lead you to this point?”

Top ranked academic institution, beautiful campus, great facilities, great dining. It’s a great time to be a Spider.

Ulla is the man for this thread!!!

I also expect that "nice teammates, a family atmosphere, and supportive coaches" are likely other +s. I would even add that the Richmond area, and particularly Henrico county, are a great place to live, with close access to the mountains, the ocean and to the DC area (if anyone would ever want to visit our Nation's capital). We have enjoyed living here for 30+ years, and would even throw in the "weather" as another magnet for recruits.

Right now, I might even add that there is a boatload of young talent on this team, with the potential to be a part of something special, like another return to the dance-floor. Maybe me and Ulla I should be doing the campus tours with the recruits...

A chance to be the change. You can make a real difference here on the court. And off the court you’ve got it all.

The players seem to have a lot of fun on and off the court, and the team should be on the brink of something special with all the young talent. A talented commit could be the thing to push us over the edge

The University of Richmond is an incredible school that has A LOT to offer. On the basketball side of things we play in a high mid major conference and play many games on national tv. We have one of the most beautiful arenas in the A10 and with the Queally Athletic Center, we will have the best facilities in the A10 and rivaling P5 schools. Furthermore, we have consistently had the 3rd best attendance in the A10 the last several years and a school committed to our success.

You CAN make it to the NBA or professional basketball. Plenty of players from A10 are in NBA and Richmond's own Justin Harper was drafted in 2011. Not to mention all the players we have had that have successful careers overseas. Also, we have a really good track record of winning A10 awards: all conference (too many to list), POY (TJ, Kevin Anderson) ROY (Kendall Anthony, Kevin Anderson, Buckingham). If you are talented enough scouts will notice you no matter where you play. You can get a lot of playing time at Richmond and stand out. Being the guy who elevated Richmond basketball to the next level will go a longer way in advancing your professional career in basketball than being a bench warmer at Kentucky.

We have an incredibly beautiful campus, top ranked academics, are in a great and vibrant city, and have a social scene that is a lot of fun (work hard play hard mentality). We have a wonderful dining hall and a lot of nice and newly renovated dorms.

All in all, Richmond is the best of many worlds and a truly wonderful opportunity to have a great college experience and play basketball at a high level. We have a passionate fan base and the university (athletically and academically) is a platform that can propel you to future success in many different aspects of your life.

I agree that we should make this a sticky thread. For any potential recruit that reads this, know that Richmond is such a special place that can help you achieve your dreams in basketball and/or academics. It was the best four years of my life and I wouldn't have changed a thing

If you're a 6'8" or taller power forward and love to rebound and play defense you'll get plenty of minutes.

At least I hope so.

We spend more money per win than anyone in the country.

We gotta use those endowment dollars somewhere!

But in all seriousness, a decade from now a few of these teams will have their wins vacated so they'll have spent a lot of money on 0!

Please read the edited changes to the beginning of this discussion and let me know if I should change anything. We should all be consistent in communicating the benefits of coming to U of R. I also think this list after edits should be permanently included at the top of the board to help our basketball program with recruiting.

LMAO, did you look at that list?? They had William & Mary ranked 23. I have never seen an attractive girl from W&M. If the list doesn’t have Pepperdine, Florida, UCLA, Tennessee, and Georgia in the top ten, then it’s a joke.

Didn't realize we had an expert on college student hotness on the board!

SpiderOldie may have temporarily forgotten what scenery 18 year old boys are looking for in a campus setting. Maybe add that to his campus tour.
When I was at UR (1972-1976) a visit to the Jenkins Greek Theater during hot weather was an eye opening experience!

In all honesty and no matter the sport, I would tell the potential recruit not to make her/his decision based solely on the sport's coach/condition of the program. Take a look what the school can do for you. Decide if it is the right place for you without the sport in your life. Things happen. Injuries happen. GG is a great example. His happened early in his true freshman year. It had a great outcome, but it could have went the other way. Then what? Hopefully, he made the right decision regardless of the outcome of his injury and passes that on to potential recruits.

I'm liking this thread!!

And, if your name happens to be or rhyme with Bryce Golden, if you come to UR you will be the most highly sought-after recruit, and most popular on the entire campus, maybe in a long while. We really want and need power forwards in the 6-8, 230 range! If the coaches tell you that they really want you, they are telling the TRUTH.

99.9% of the 6,500 fans that come to each game love the Spiders, adamantly cheer on the team and will support you during goodtime and bad times. The other 0.1% participate on this forum and are in a small minority.

This team is about to take off with the 7 top players returning. With your help we can have multiple NCAA appearance over the next few years.
