What has changed?

to me we had been over helping often. then the help couldn't recover to the shooter left open.
maybe it's as simple as fan1 said. if we get beat on the drive less, there's less need to help. problem solved.

In the post game interview, Gilyard said it started halfway through the Rhode Island game. That was when they really became laser-focused on winning.
I liked an ESPN article that included part of that interview.

But the part I liked was:

"It was Richmond's ninth victory as a No. 12 seed or worse since seeding began in 1979.

No other team has more than four.

...the Atlantic 10 Tournament champ Spiders (24-12) improved their NCAA tourney record against fifth-seeded teams to 4-0."

So all around, they started rebounding, driving to the basket and making free throws, playing defense and Gilyard started scoring and running the offense. All the things we have been begging for.

The defense the last 5 games has been amazing. Where has this come from? If we can keep it up we can make a serious run in this thing. Never thought this was possible but sure am enjoying it.
100 % - defense is what has changed. We are seeing desire to defend (effort) that we have never seen from this team. In fact, I will go as far as to say that I have never seen this type of defense from any Mooney team.

Good for them, it has made the difference!

1. Gilly has just strapped this team on his back. When he becomes a scoring oriented player as he has been the past 5 games, we are such a better team.
2. Burton: Playing with a high level of confidence as well. Couple that with what Gilly is doing and our two best players are playing their best basketball right now.
3. Defense: Senior lead team has figured out the approrpriate intensity in which we need to play our defense taking our biggest weakness and making it a huge strength.

this is the only real answer. We’re also getting contributions from Grace and Cayo.

Our guys are just playing with so much heart and effort. For example, Burton hasn't shot very well since the A10 tournament started. But the guy is playing so hard that he's getting you 15 and 10 without needing to shoot well. Gilyard is playing his heart out and playing with aggression. And everyone is communicating and focused when we're on defense. These things go a long way. Intensity has carried us

What see is living up to preseason expectations.

Tarrant level toughness, poise and defensive and rebounding aggressiveness. Knew we always had the O. Loved the way we controlled the tempo today. Absent that Iowa 11-0 run, Spiders took them out of sync.

Keep this up, like our Sweet 16 chances.

We got Providence, we can take them.
