the first half of yesterday's game featured two good football teams performing pretty near what I expect was their offensive peak...

as you know, and the video clip shows, the Spiders got hit with the worst starting blow possible, a 100 yard return for a TD...

the way we came back to tie it in five plays told me something positive about our team's leadership, poise/determination and skills...that the game was on and our Championship/Playoff chances were worth fighting for...and we did!

our guys not only answered the opening TD, but two others in the very entertaining offensive half...

ultimately we didn't get it done, but the Spiders fans that left Villanova Stadium yesterday had to be pretty proud of the effort our guys gave against a good Villanova team...

Go Spiders!

Very proud of the players...they played their hearts out.

The coaches? Not so much!!!

I'm not a student of the game, but have watched a lot of football...after the opening drive of the 2nd half in which we got our only first downs of the second half and lost Milan Howard something changed...

maybe it was just Villanova's execution, or focus, which Coach Ferrante' mentioned in his post game remarks, but our play calling seemed different too...

It seemed like on offense we attempted too many big plays downfield that were unsuccessful on 1st or 2nd downs leaving us in difficult third down positions...which we could no longer convert...

It looked like with Dykes and Howard out we went away from any type of possession, or grind it out type of football that could have garnered some 1st downs, maybe a sustained drive that would have helped our "gassed" defense that finally gave in in the fourth quarter.

Go Spiders!

The red zone interception pretty much sealed it, as 32 pointed out. The game was ours until then.

agreed...it was different, particularly on offense after this big play...

however, our defense stopped the Wildcats on their following two possessions before giving up the two scores in the 4th quarter...

Go Spiders!

Ot is amazing that in the same game our offense went from high octane to non existent. The interception changed the game but didn't seal the game, there were still 25 minutes left in the second half. The offense disappeared and the loss of two running backs isn't the blame, our two best runners were still in the game.

The Moron as you say that called that play called the plays that beat Albany, Maine, Delaware and Stony Brook!
That coach also called three more plays Saturday that our Quarterback overthrew by inches in which each one would have been a touchdown if caught. For all of you that are not attending these games please refrain from criticizing unless you were in attendance to see the whole story. Our coaches are putting these players in positions to win when we call the right plays and schemes and when the players execute, success turns into victories
Even with a very small chance to win Saturday we are still alive in the playoff hunt
Come to JMU,support our team, bring a Stone and help slay the giant

My apologies, Mrs Huesman (or is it Mrs Durden?)

If you have been going to U of R football games the last 20 years you would know who I am and the rest of our peanut gang
Moo Da Chains for your information

Look you put me in my place by telling me the same Moron who called winning plays against Albany, Maine, Delaware, and Stony Brook. Be Satisfied.

Of course you did forget to mention that the Same Moron also called plays against Fordham and Yale, as well as a Wide Receiver Pass when the game was on the line against Villanova. But that's your prerogative.

If you are satisfied with the direction of the program, I'm sincerely happy for you. Me? I think we can do a whole lot better.

If you are old enough to remember or even possibly attended the National Championship game you would understand the passion real fans have with our football program. I too am disappointed in our past few years but at least
acknowledge our improvements
I would love to have you tailgate with us Saturday at JMU and further our discussion

Improvements?

The year before the current regimen came in we were in the playoffs.

Since then we haven't sniffed the playoffs.

Our record is 15-17.

We've suffered arguably the worst loss in the modern era of Spider Football (see Fordham).

There are other things I could point out, but out of deference to the innocent, I'll stop.

But to the subject at hand....

I certainly can respect your POV. You? Not so much (but that's okay...it takes all kinds)

As for you I neither need or want your respect
I am only interested in positive vibes going into Saturday Go Spiders

UR79&Peanuts, your edit was a little late, but no worries as your original comment is memorialized in message #17 of this thread.

Just a thought: Intolerance destroys the soul; try to be more inclusive.

UR79&Peanuts, I mean no harm, but I am curious. In your mind, exactly what 'kind' am I that you would want me excluded?

One that seems to want to be talking negatively about our coaching staff after weekly improving from our up and down start of this season rather than complimenting about since Yale how we have weekly improved in coaching and execution by our young team

If you aspire for excellence, mediocrity isn't an option.

By any measure, 15-17 is, at best, mediocre.

By settling on 'being average' (I'm being kind here), you and your 'kind' (your word, not mine) give license to more of the same.

Look, our stellar athletic facility and stadium improvements may aid in the recruitment of some quality student-athletes, but the fate of the program is not in the brick and mortar alone. Someone has to coach these young men and I happen to think that that person (and his staff) is not yet on campus.

If that makes me an outcast and/or unwelcomed by you or yours, so be it.

If I'm proven wrong, I'll be the first to apologize. However, if I'm right, as I fervently believe I am, let's fix it.

In the mean time, I'll reserve my 'cheering' for Saturday afternoons and address the realities of the moment as I see it.

Sleep Well.

Okay you win on where our program should be
I win on our staff and players are better today than 5 weeks ago. I will enjoy the week as we prepare to show up Saturday, and try to pull off the upset of the year.
As for sleeping well our disagreement means nothing and bothers me none. Hope you attend Saturday and please come tailgate with us.
“Love on another as I have loved you” is the real game of life.

I have no interest in personally winning in this matter. My only interest is seeing our university win. I want Richmond to become the preeminent university on the CAA athletic field (if not the FCS) just as they are already academically.

I have no doubt that we both want the same thing. However, I'd like to think I can respect other people's thoughts and ideas without getting overtly personal. Can you say the same thing? Before you answer, think about your snide 'as for your kind we do not need your support' comment.

I could say, "Who died and made you the authority on University of Richmond Athletics?" But that's not who I am.

My friend, if you want to 'grow' the program, it's going to take people of all ilk to get involved; not just your 'kind'. Elitism accomplishes nothing unless division is your ultimate goal.

Have a wonderful Monday. Later this morning we can both listen to Russ tell us (again) on the conference hook-up how "we have to do a better job of coaching". At this point, to me, that's rather obvious, isn't it?

FYI “Moron” started it all
Think about that as you cast stones

Who did I personally attack?

BTW: I stand by my assessment of that call. A team that fought it's tail off to be in a position to win the game and for someone to call that play at that stage of the game was moronic. That's something you wouldn't even see in a Pop Warner game.

It was an indictment of the entire team by some coach who felt that the team needed to resort to some low-percentage, trickery in order to compete. It says, "Guys, we are going to the 'Madden Playbook' because you can't win if we play it straight".

Never mind, the play's devastating outcome.

Please refer to your post 15 That word should first appear from you
This finishes my discussion on this thread

Not taking sides here, I can agree and disagree with both of you. But I will say that I've grown tired of starting seasons poorly and finishing strong.....after we are all but out of postseason considerations. Couple of Rocco seasons come to mind, as well as numerous Mooney seasons. I mean I've grown really really tired of it. Once I hit 70, I pretty much want things to happen NOW, not years down the road. For obvious reasons...

Well, we started 2011 3-0 with an FBS win.....

....and then lost the last 8. That was the year I decided to go to all 11 games. Thanks for reminding me.
