It was a fun day at URI. We kept the cannon very quiet that they shoot when their team scores. Takeaways:
Offense: it was obvious the game plan was to pass often; run game was secondary; we still struggled somewhat on that part of the offense, so I hope we are solid for JMU; Lauletta's passing is excellent - he seldom throws a ball where a defender has a shot at it; he did focus on primary targets, but he checked down and found other open receivers and did not try to force any passes; two-deeps received quality playing time again; no need to post anything about players hurt
Defense - dominant; without the final drive, which was not played against our starting line-up, URI would have been held to under 200 yards of offense; they had success early with having receivers block down field and dumping short passes in the flat to their very good running back Cooper, but the defense adjusted by crowding the line on the receivers, something I wish we did regularly instead of 10 yards off the ball; Omar Howard's name was seemingly called on almost every play - he was everywhere; the line did a good job of harassing the QBs; acrobatic INT by Jones; lot of rotation on the line
Special teams: Yoder was very strong on the 35-yard FG; when kicking into a considerable wind, we could not put the ball out of the end zone and they got some very good run-backs - we kicked it 4 times to Cooper who almost broke several; tackling still an issue; a little confusion at times on punt teams; overall, the job got done
Penalties - 10 is a high number for this team; several times hurt us on big yardage plays or helped their offense; URI made some very costly penalties
Fans - the Spider fans attending were almost all parents of players; great group of people; I take pride in the quality of young men being recruited by the staff and you can see why the players are such good student-athletes just by talking to the parents - class people; I commented to several parents that there seemed to me to be something a little special about this team, especially in light of losing 22 seniors - to a person they agreed; we have a lot of young players, but they are getting playing time and enjoying the entire experience; it also stood out what good students they are when I asked about their majors - there are no get-by programs for these guys; one example is a senior defensive back - already has a job lined up with Price Waterhouse
