UR Football Rivals

This is my first season following Spider football. My observations from the board seem to be that James Madison and William & Mary are the two main rivals for UR football. JMU is the big school and seems to be the more hated rival. W&M seems to be the long, traditional rival, but I sense more respect for them since they are similar in academics, size and probably recruit from the same pool of players. I wanted to get input from others who have followed UR football much longer than I. Thanks

yep, UR/w&m one of the oldest rivalries in the country, the game always played on thanksgiving day. a ton of respect for their athletics and their school. umwcah, is an upstart, former all girls school with obnoxious fans, though most of the grads i worked with were very nice and not rude at all.

I was at the game last Saturday and saw the obnoxious JMU fans you described.

You nailed it from a Tribe perspective. So much shared between these two schools over the years. When I first met current Tribe WR Coach Winston October he said "Hope my being a Spider won't be a problem". I told him it was the opposite because I knew, and respected who he is.

I didn't realize Winston was down there. Yuck. Hah.

Great guy, and great coach. He replaced David Corley who went to UConn.

Winston told me a funny story about Corley. When Winston was with Edmonton in the CFL they played at Hamilton in 2003. Hamilton fans are notoriously abusive to visiting players and when they took the field the verbal harassment was bad. Making the field, and thinking the worst was over Winston heard a loud yell of "Richmond Sucks!!". He turned around and there was Corley grinning at him in a Hamilton uniform.

Winston was the definition of big play guy. I can't recall the opponent but there was virtually no time left. The opposing team was force to punt from mid field. This would have put us in a very deep hole with very little time remaining. Winston blocked the punt and blocked it so solidly it ended up on the 5 or so yard line. We went in for the score and win. Add to that the number of punt returns, interceptions, and big tackles he is one of our best.

Having gone to both schools, W&M is a strong rivalry but very respectful, on both sides. By the way I am still a full spider and have no problem rooting for a spider win today.

Another reflection on W&M UR games. The year WM was told that the feather on their logo was offensive and had to be removed. The game was in Billsburg. spider fans had blue or red feathers on in solidarity with the tribe's issue. I believe UR won.

Curtis Jefferson QBing the rain at City Stadium, Andrew Howard winning game on last second FG in 09, Sidbury blocking FG in OT at Reservation in 08 and Howard again winning it with kick. Hope to add another tonight.

Our rivals didn't show very well tonight, granted it was cold, but they had 1/2 of their fans leave at halftime and had a whole lot of empty seats before that.
