Looks like we got another guard commitment for next year. More info on Quentin Southall in the recruiting track thread.

That makes 2 verbals with Wilson next year when we only have 1 to give. Must mean we're expecting attrition. Which I would expect as well, only natural. Hope not a grad transfer but without a NCAA bid this year Mooney probably realizes that's quite possible and hedging. Or could be someone at bottom of roster ideally. Anyway I got no problem with taking another verbal but found mildly surprising for us. I know some like Spiderman have been critical of VCU for instance overrecruiting spots and pushing someone out. When is signing period...usually right around start of season correct? Let's see if both Wilson and Southall officially sign.

Saw this. Did Southhall have any other offers besides ours?

Didn’t even see any recruiting profiles on him. Verbal commits just picked it up & says he’s a walk on so that’s good. Looks like strong student & late bloomer for hoops. If he has any d1 hoops ship aspirations I’m surprised he would announce so early to UR tho. He could blow up his senior year. Of course as walk on if he got a ship could take it whenever. Just seemed like a very early commit for a walk on. Glad to have him regardless, Alexandria VA kid is a big bonus.

Maybe he figured he wanted to attend UR and knew he'd get in if he was a walk-on bball player. It's also entirely possible he can decommit if he blows up and gets offered. Because he's a walk-on I presume he doesn't sign an NLI and thus wouldn't really have a restriction to do so.

Well he would be a lock to get into UR with his academic credentials and being a men's hoops walk-on at any time he wants. Agree on the rest I said as much above. Do not recall a walk on ever "committing" this early before in following UR. That & the early news not indicating him being a walk on was a little confusing. Hey we'll take it, good luck to Quentin his senior year.

It was noted that he would be a committed walk on..

Yes but that note didn't come out until earlier today, and after I posted this asking about the ships. Quentin's Twitter announcement last evening and subsequent post by one of his coaches did not indicate it. We didn't know for certain until Verbal Commits confirmed walk on status.

wonder if it could be a situation where we don't have a scholarship now but plan on giving him one of the 5 the following year.

I'm a little slow at times. Could you explain what you mean?
I agree, I'm not sure how you promoting the premium board by stating that you posted he was a walk on there, hours before verbal commits did is "misinformation"...

I'll have to get back to you. In order to determine what exactly I was thinking at the time, I will need to drink a few beers while watching some college and NBA hoops. Fall asleep, wake up at 12:43, and check the board. Thinking maybe Thursday or Friday night will be better to try to re-create my thought process. I am sure there was an egregious attack on me and Spiders basketball in there somewhere.

Ha! Very fair.

That would be a completely Mooney thing to do. But hell no, do you give one of your 13 scholarships to a walk-on. How do you possibly build a program, just handing out scholarships like that. This really chaps me because we have actually done this before and then we look around and wonder why we are completely mediocre. This is one of the reasons why. We should have a full roster of 13 legit scholarship players every single year. That should be a BASIC job requirement of our head coach. And yes, we don't have a full allotment this year, why? Because some people have this mindset about how we operate our program.

I was just spitballing there. just saying maybe we believe he's a D1 player, just a late bloomer. we get him in the building for a year and see. or maybe not.

I agree with Spiderman - this looks like a case where he walks on and maybe in year 2 or 3, they give him a scholarship. Can't say I agree with it - but just smells like this might happen. If the kid develops and becomes a guy who is in the regular rotation - I am all for it.

Shoot, a good 30% of Mooney scholarship players over the past 8 years didn't turn out to be good D1 players. But yet, we think he is going to pick up some guy who has only D2 offers and turn him into a D1 player in a year or two. Call me skeptical.
