To those who frown on all criticism of the program's performance over the past 10 years( which has a clear track record-56% success), I submit and modify slightly the comments of a former Virginia governor.

“Silence means consent.” "That concept roughly indicates the UR administration(added)to assume that a lack of response to an action equals approval."

Not sure what they are teaching now, but my UR education emphasized working for positive results and improvements in all aspects of one's life.
The fan base are stakeholders in the athletic program and University's image. Opinions submitted in a civil manner should be respected and encouraged.

Who is frowning on all criticism of the program?

For a constituency (this board) whom have received a top level education there seems to be abnormal amount of "spoiled brats" who focus on firing the coach when your desires are not fulfilled. Stop a minute and enjoy the games, that's all it is.

I really enjoyed that game last night. Same with the one against Mason. That was probably my favorite, followed closely by the ones against JMU and VCU. Really fun!

I don't see that anyone is trying to silence the critics. I do believe that many of the criticisms are not presented in a particularly civil manner as you recommend.

I don't presume that being a respectful critic is the only avenue of discourse, sometimes harsh rhetoric spurs good debate, but let's not ask those with a milder attitude to shut their traps just because they are critical of the critics.

Well said.

There are about 8 people on this board that want to slash and burn everything that has to do with the program and not hear anything to the contrary. The suggestion by some today that getting crushed by vcu on Friday night would somehow be a good thing is pretty emblematic of the situation.

Could not disagree more. I do not think that there is anyone on this board whose desire is to (slash and burn everything that has to do with the program and not hear anything to the contrary) as you put it. There are some homers, some who are blind, some who try to shut others down, some who are arrogant, some who are smart aleck, some with high knowledge, some less knowledgeable, some who are very vocal, some not as much, BUT, this is the composition of every message board.

Those who are calling for change do so out of a desire to see a better product on the floor. I have seen no comments that indicate some kind of personal vendetta against the school or the basketball program. There is much evidence to indicate that job performance is sorely lacking and changes need to be made.

So what are you doing aside from ripping Mooney and the student athletes on an anonymous message board to reconcile the situation?

To be clear, I've spoken with people in the athletic department who have completely written off this message board and it's posters as a real pulse of their stakeholders because it is so negative.

Honestly, I'm pretty frustrated right now but I don't have any other way that I'd like to spend my time in the winter besides the Robins Center. I know people on this board that have threatened to stop going to games out of sheer frustration for several years now but they keep showing up. I really don't think anybody on this board has anything better to do with their time in the winter either. Season tickets were up this winter. Attendance is up this winter. And we have 2 big local draws on the team next winter.

See you tomorrow and Friday and next week and the week after and over the summer and into next season and we'll all this fun all over again. Whether you want us to lose by 40 to vcu or not.

Mo, I am sure you are right about the Admin and staff not caring about a message board, however I have started to see and hear about the discontent spreading to other forms of social media. That may get worse over the next two weeks.

I agree with your other point about our attendance through thick and thin. I will always be there in the RC, whether happy or pissed. Lol

Haven't gotten the impression that there is anyone - trolls excepted - who wants us to lose by 1 point or 40 or anywhere in between. Does get a little predictable that the message board will "blow up" after a loss and particularly after the kind of loss that is tougher to take; i.e. a loss to a team that on paper we should beat. Certain posters are so predictable that their posts are fairly repetitive and have to be taken with a grain of salt. And totally agree that any comments directed to anyone in our athletic department should be owned whether they are positive or negative. One of the problems with electronic media is the ability to take anonymous pot shots. As far as this board most of us are known to many other posters.

Is anyone putting their name behind it? Or all anonymous stuff on Twitter too?
I have only personally seen the comments about the teams performance on Facebook. Nothing nasty, just about the lack of defense mainly. I am sure Twitter is worse.

If the athletic department is indifferent about this message board, that's fine. But it's the only place I know with a collection of passionate fans expressing their opinions about UR athletics. Do they want opinions – good and bad? Do they care? Or do they just expect to trot out a .500 team every year that graduates good kids, has an amenable coach and has dogs taking a dump during halftime shows?

If they're truly happy with the product they've given us, that tells me about all I need to know about their desire to be great.

I think you've already made up your mind on the answers to your questions. Whether that means you and others have the gumption to stop supporting the program is the game of chicken everyone seems willing to play.

X2

Denial, head in the sand, and indifference are good enough reasons to avoid dealing with situations. I don't know too many business models that would succeed like this.

I see it the other way. The AD sends out surveys. The AD can look at ticket, concessions and apparel revenue numbers year-over-year to see how they are doing.

I sincerely hope they aren't wasting time reading the emotional drivel on this board. And I'm someone who generates emotional drivel.

I don't think the athletic department thinks we are trotting out a .500 team because we aren't; we've had one season of .500 ball in the last nine years. We're 60.4% during that span, a lot of ADs would be pleased with that.

I'm not satisfied that we have few ncaa appearances to look back on but clearly their lens is different than mine or others on this board.

If the athletic staff is not happy with this message board, that's okay with me. However, I can't believe that they are happy with the results on the floor either. There's a lot of venting here, and there's a lot of speculation as well. Isn't that pretty normal?

So, is that are AD's measure of success for our basketball program. Is winning a measure that he tracks or just $$$ coming into the program? Does he realize how much more $$$ would be coming into the program if we would be winning?

I can only surmise which measurables are important to them. I can tell you without a shadow of doubt that the tenor of this board is not one of them.

I would question anyone who makes decisions off any type of anonymous message board or twitter chatter. Social media is designed for people to say whatever crap they want without having any accountability for having said it. So, yeah, I expect them to largely ignore what is said on here.

But do they really need to come here to find out that the men's basketball program has been stuck in a rut and underperforming for the past 5 years?

Additionally, the folks that are writing nasty emails from anomymous accounts to our staff and to our players isn't doing anything to help the situation either. I've heard about this several times over the last month. Gutless stuff, really.
Anonymous emails to the players??? really??? You can confirm that? If so, that is horrible but I cant see it.

No, all they have to do is listen to "our own" sports radio station never mention UR. If they do it usually sounds like a eulogy.

Yesterday, Burton broadcast from Costco. Today he had a guest from the VCU-fan A10 site, then two hours of VCU paid programming. It really is out of control anymore.

Burton works for VCU. I haven't listened to him in years. He doesn't have a voice for radio in my opinion. I'm surprised he's still on the air and they haven't put on ESPN in his place (or the feed from 980).

We have great kids who do very well in the classroom and will do well in life once they graduate. Who cares if our program has underperformed since 2011? Expect more of exactly what we have seen from our men's basketball program in the past 5 years for the next 5 years. Might as well buckle up and enjoy the mediocrity.

Look at it this way....If you paid $60k and were expecting to get a Corvette, and what you got was a Smart Car, would you be OK with that? It gets you from Point A to Point B, but that's about it.

Looks like this year the Mooney mobile will only get us to point B 50% of the time.

If some think this message board is out of control, get on the Alabama message board or Paul Finebaum's show when Alabama football experiences a loss.

UR borders are definitely porous, we need to build a defensive wall!!

Unfortunately there are those that will ride the Smart Car until the road ends.
