Things could be worse

Mooney would cover his mouth and cuss you, but would never throw a punch. Lol Howard hasn’t changed a bit from his “Fab 5” days.

He shouldn’t get fired. People make mistakes.
Whether he should or shouldn’t, I don’t think he does. He’s been really successful at Michigan, which means they’ll find a way to keep him. I expect a suspension and apology tour, but ultimately doesn’t get fired.

I don't see any way Howard survives the punch. A couple of years from now someone else will hire him.

If he doesn't survive - I wonder if Phil Martelli takes over. He is the associate head coach, and has more head coaching experience than Juwan. Maybe just on an interim basis, but if he is able to turn things around - maybe they give him a shot, especially to keep staff and recruits intact.

Howard was really successful with Beilein’s players, but as those guys cycle out, Michigan has gone downhill fast. Wouldn’t surprise me in he gets canned. This provides a nice out for them.

But I think he has some recruits coming in. This year has been rough, no doubt. Suspension is a no brainer - but not sure he gets canned. Maybe since season is basically over - suspend for rest of season.

I didn't say he should. But the bar in this day and age is often set, so one mistake means the end of you. And often those discretions are far less than trying to punch someone in the face on live TV in front of 20,000 fans. Plus, he got into with Turgeon last year, granted he didn't punch him, but he should have learned to control his anger better after that first incident.

Good point. This happens frequently post JB after his players dry up, saw it here.

But ultimately think Howards stays, I don't think Michigan fires him.

He has a top 10 class coming in, including his son who is apparently pretty good

And don't forget - Michigan just signed their football coach Harbaugh to a 5 year deal worth about 37 million and Howard signed before the season for 5 years 17 million. While I agree they have cause to fire him - there would be some lawyers involved to get a settlement and I bet he could settle on half his contract to get rid of him.

Michigan has money, but even for them - this would be a lot to take on and would require some donors to get involved.

Could possibly open a window for JB to return and take over for a year or two until they find replacement.

But I got a feeling Howard keeps his job and nothing to see here.

Out of left field - but any chance you think Martelli would be interested in coming to Richmond if Mooney is let go?

He is older - 67. So not a long term option, but maybe someone for 5 years to get us back on solid footing after the super seniors leave and Mooney is theoretically let go.

Plus - you might be able to get him a little cheaper as he is probably not in it for money at this point. He makes 450K at Michigan right now. I think you offer 800K - maybe he is interested, not only to get back to head coach, but also gives him a shot to play St. Joes as I always felt that relationship ended badly and I wonder if he would like a shot to get back at them. And I think his son is on the staff at VCU - so family connection in town might tug him this way.

I like this idea. We should do this.
See this is why I come to this board — great original ideas with interesting facts. I had no idea his salary nor that he had a son at VCU.

I think Phil's son may have been abusive as well at one time in one of his previous stops.

Ya pass on martelli for me. He was sort of similar to what mooney is doing at the end of his time at SJU.
