Hey guys, this isn't a bball related post, but I was told about a man who is wanted for robbery in the Richmond area. Heres a photo of him Robber. If you see this man please contact the authorities, he stole millions of dollars and loves to compete for more

I may be the only person on the board who doesn't care at all how much money Mooney makes or has made. I'm not directly paying him and he's been able to convince management to pay him a certain amount. Good for him. I think the whole ROI comparison is ridiculous, but then again, I didn't go to the B-school so what could I possibly know? The measurement I care about most is wins/losses. Tournament appearances and records against rivals take care of themselves if you win enough.

I've probably missed <20 home games since 1972. I was a Spider fan before Mooney arrived and I'll hopefully still be around when he's gone. Years ago I said he had overstayed his welcome and still believe that. But I hope the team wins every time they play.

I think a lot of the Mooney criticism on the board is valid. It's certainly repetitive. (The "sippy cup" references are a bit puerile IMO). But the criticisms about how much money he made/makes are fairly a reflection on management - not on Mooney.

A lot of the criticism directed at Mooney should be directed at the administration. Yes, he leaves a bit to be desired but you don't have to be a graduate of the business school to see that Richmond isn't getting the value for their investment. I see them as hypocrites for saying that they do. I burned my basketball tickets maybe I should consider burning my business school diploma too.

The athletic director is truly awful. It’s not Mooney’s fault we overpay him. But it has been devastating to the whole athletic department.

Maybe I'm being too literal, but I view Mooney's salary as an operating expense - not a capital expense. And that's why every time I see a reference to ROI it bothers me a bit. But my degree was in communications and perhaps ROI is just a bit of shorthand for "we're not getting our money's worth." Nope - we don't win enough. If Mooney was making $5 million annually but we were an NCAA team every year there's probably no one on this board who would care what the University is paying him.

I haven't met the current AD but I was introduced to Gill once. It was truly one of the weirdest conversations with anyone I can recall.

It's probably one of those "you had to be there" moments. But here's how it started. My buddy who provided the introduction said "Keith - there's someone I'd like you to meet." After a handshake, I said in a clearly VERY joking manner "it's obvious you have nothing better to do than talk to me." He took immediate and obvious offense and the conversation quickly went downhill from there. I'm assuming the offense he took was a moment of self-realization.

I get your point but at $5M/year - you have to do more than just make the tournament. Part of the issue is us not realizing that for our operating budget, our income (NCAA units, tv & ticket sales) is abysmal. We spend a lot to get a little compared to our conference mates. That’s a management issue with the AD. However, given that Mooney is the largest expense, he’s one of the key underperforming assets.

Right, salaries are operating costs but that doesn't mean you just lump them in with other operating costs and shrug if the employees aren't justifying their pay. There's nothing forcing us to pay a basketball coach $1.3 million a year. The electricity bill is going to be what it is, can't do a lot about that. Yes, we need a coach but the salary we pay him should be commensurate with some level of success.

Don’t worry we have the most legendary coach in Richmond history. Don’t forget we are about to turn this season all around. I can’t seem to find my sunglasses. Can’t wait to hangout with Mr. Hardt.

Mooney can't fire himself, so yes the buck stops at Hardt and the administration. If our most public and most highly paid employee is being extended and given raises despite his lack of success on the court (18 years, 55%), how many other university employees are doing mediocre jobs and getting raises and retained.

I always thought UR stood for being the best at everything we do and having the best people to do it, but I question that now.

Well, you are being a bit wishful with this notion in general. UR is still a relatively large organization even though it is a comparatively small university. They don’t just fire people willy nilly and in fact I think you have to be pretty egregious to get the boot. They don’t want it to be a revolving door and use the jack Welch ABC grading methodology.

That said, coaches should be held to a different standard. I don’t think the standard for bball has a lot do with wins and losses so long as you aren’t flat out failing.

Since they're being paid at a higher standard, they absolutely should be held to a higher standard.

After 18 years, might be time to hire a door-repairman to figure out why this door has only revolved halfway around at most...

I chatted with Gill at an away game at Umass. But don't worry sman, I did not try any pick up lines on him. I was too busy trying to cover my my #FMM shirt to think of any.

He seemed like an alright guy. There were only a handful of Spider fans, so I appreciated that he came over to say hello and ask where I travelled from to get to the game.

Did you ask if he traveled from Richmond or DC?

He used to live in my neighborhood, which to be clear, is in RVA. He was here more than most people give him credit for, and he was a nice guy. Was paralyzed with indecision is the impression I get from people close to me who are university employees and interacted with him.

Well, he wasn't nice to me. Allison V introduced me to him; he looked down his nose at me and then walked off with not so much as a nod or any kind of acknowledgement. I'm still sick of opening up Rivals and seeing his ugly mug.
