Coincidence? UD job still vacant as Spiders win again
Keeler, 57 and originally from Emmaus, Pennsylvania, was a three-year starter at linebacker for Raymond’s Delaware teams, including as a junior on the 1979 NCAA Division II championship team. Keeler then succeeded Raymond as coach in 2002 and went 86-52 in 11 seasons, including winning the 2003 NCAA Division I-AA title and finishing second in 2007 and 2010.
However, Keeler was fired on Jan. 7, 2013, with then-athletic director Eric Ziady making references to the “direction” of the program with few specifics. He was hired as Sam Houston State coach before the 2014 season and has a 34-9 record, making Keeler 208-86-1 overall in 23 years as a head coach, including his first job at Division III Rowan (N.J.).
Keeler’s successor, Dave Brock, coached Delaware to a 19-22 record before being fired Oct. 16 of this season. He was replaced on an interim basis by co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Dennis Dottin-Carter.
Coach Danny Rocco of CAA rival Richmond has emerged as the front-runner for the Delaware job, with many believing he may have already been offered and accepted the position. However, Richmond (10-3) plays at Eastern Washington in Saturday’s FCS quarterfinals.
Both Rocco's and Keeler's names have also come up at Temple in discussions about who may step in after Matt Rhule's move to Baylor, The News Journal has learned.
