Student attendance article

How many students were at the 1st and 2nd Tribe game this past season?

Has this article been updated By Charlie Broaddus initially Published 11/13/14 and Updated 01/15/15-over a year ago?
If you take out the high school band, not many. One game this year had 14 UR students in the end zone seats. This article says 900 kids reserve tickets, that is just BS.

The Halloween game was quite popular during the first half -- there was a cash dash at half-time for winners of the costume contest . After the dash, many students left.

We are what we are at this level, and there's a lot more to do in this college town than in other FCS colleges like NDSU where there's no other game in town. We just don't have the students who care enough about FCS football to create that kind of atmosphere. I've come to grips that we'll never be mistaken for LSU or even NDSU. What this school has done for years and years is fine to the core fans, we draw a decent amount of fans to games, and that's how it is.

Some bigger schools try to copy a big time atmosphere (Madison), but unless they're winning the students and fanbase doesn't care. What they do doesn't seem natural. It seems too sterile and forced.

The measure is how many student fannies are in the stands, the number of ticket reservations is totally irrelevant.

The concept of ticket reservartions seems senseless given typical turnout. There are only about 3k students, let them in with their ID until there isn't enough room for them. Have heard on several occasions that students didn't get a reservation but truly wanted to attend and couldn't.

I agree...let them in with IDs until full. If some leave at half-time, then let more in. Based on what I have seen, I doubt that we will be turning away many (if any) students at the gate. It's sad that students stay inside on school supplied internet or school supplied cable playing and watching whatever!

As much as we give students a hard time, attendance issues I think are a real problem for the athletic department for paying customers. For both football and basketball, I feel like at sellouts it's still only 75% attended. Noticed it last night at the basketball game. The only reason I think it really matters is that we turn away folks at the gate. Wish we could sell standing room only tickets and ushers could fill if seats that aren't used. Not sure exact method, but I hate that we turn folks away when there is space. Not to mention if you keep turning folks away, they'll stop trying, and we can use all the fans we can get.

I've become immune to whether students attend or not; not like they stand and cheer during the games. Agree it should be first come, first served for students to attend FB or BB games. The reservations system is a waste of our ticket folks' time; they need to focus on building our brand and filling seats with people who truly want to be there. Was necessary when I attended in 80's since we packed the student sections and wanted to be there to have fun with friends and support our teams, even if they weren't winning.

Can you imagine what it would be like if God forbid they actually had to PAY for their tickets like we did

How about we get a bunch of Jewish Mothers that are alumnus and have them go around the campus
and put guilt trips on the students? I can hear them now- "What do you mean you don't care!!!!"
Do you know how lucky you are to have a Robins Center?!? Do you know how hard those boys
and coaches work for you??"

I think it might work.

The article posted was from November 2014 - what's the point of bringing this up now?

My guess is a student athletic fee is included in the cost of attending UR, just as it was when I was a student. So they probably are paying for a ticket. And if not, the cost of attending UR has gotten so high that I have no problem letting students into athletic events at no charge.

It was sold out because they had a lot of birthday parties that gave out tons of unused tickets. I was with several people trying to give them away and there was no one looking for tickets.

FYI, emailed Ticket Office and reminded them they need to ensure ST holders really understand how the "Bring A Friend" tickets work. Can't assume 1 email about the Sat sellout and using tickets for another game is enough communication. Heard someone yelling at our Ticket Window folks on Sat because they wouldn't give them any Standing Room Only (SRO) seats for the vouchers, when we don't even sell SRO seats. Guess our fans just aren't used to sellouts that much; good problem to have but really need to encourage ST holders and corporate sponsors to fill the seats.

I see a lot more students going to work out at the Weinstein Center before, during, and after home football games than I actually see in the student section in the stadium. Hey, more power to them if they are getting in a Saturday afternoon workout I guess.

I can't even imagine being able to tailgate on campus and then walk over to the stadium as a student. Back in the old days we always had to find a driver to make the trip over to City Stadium to watch (for the most part) far less competitive teams than we are fielding today.

Different generation and I don't think you'll ever see the student section full at football games outside of the occasional Homecoming or promotional gimmick/giveaway. Better to invite some of your friends who are passionate about football and will enjoy a great environment absent all the time and expense of a trip to Charlottesville or Blacksburg.
