Gipe promoted to assistant coach, McGonigal to recruiting director, Stokes to director of program development. Looks like we will not be hiring an outside assistant to fill Hovde's spot, if I'm interpreting correctly, but rather will backfill by hitting a DOBO type instead.

Expect the DOBO to be a recent grad. I know Sherod is teaching at St. Christophers - maybe he rather be a DOBO for a few years and ultimately work his way up. Might make more money at St. Chris though.

Hovde>Gipe. Big loss of an opportunity to go out and get a high quality assistant with a whole new rolodex of contacts.

this has been a constant complaint here about Mooney, but if you don't promote from within then every assistant you have has to leave to move up.

since I don't know otherwise, I'm going to assume Gipe et al are good at what they do and are ready for additional responsibilitites.

I think it's safe to say that Mooney promotes from within, to the highest levels of his staff, a bit more than most coaches at this level. I can't say whether that's good or bad, but he did go out and hire an outsider and a "hybrid" this year and we made the tournament.

Still no rebounds

We talked about this a bit in Hovde thread. It would have only been a surprise if Mooney went outside the staff for this hire. The only mild surprise to me is Gipe over McGonigal. But that’s because I thought mcgonigal was higher in the staff hierarchy than Gipe. But I could have been wrong. Or maybe Gipe jumped him. Think they started same year.

Outside perspective would be a positive, but Mooney is so entrenched in his ways that being open to outsiders and “something fresh” is a rarity. For the most part, pattern prevails as does predictablity.
