Anyone see any changes being made to Russ' staff? Anyone believe either of the coordinators are in jeopardy of losing their job?

sometimes the offense play calling was a little confuseing but , i would think the offense will change alot next year , this year was about taking advantage of kyle , the defense this year seemed they tried to run a scheme they didnt have the players to match, d line depth very important this , a few transfers would help to go with the recruiting.

OC Durden may have the itch for moving on voluntarily. He was a finalist for the Chatty job when Russ left for UR but lost out.It would be great to keep the staff in tact for continuity.Hopefully,Sparky still has the burn in his belly to continue coaching. He’s a great guy,a great recruiter and the kids look up to him.

I see no reason to make a change at either of the coordinators. On offense Durden will have the chance to have a QB running the offense that more accurately fits the system. And on defense, I thought the players really started to figure out the new changes there as the season progressed. It seemed to be doing much better in the last half of the season.

Agreed on all counts. I'm open to seeing more from Durden here but wouldn't be surprised if he found a way to move on either. I thought the defense improved tremendously through the course of the season, so I don't expect much to change there.

Regarding Sparky, I saw him hard at work recruiting this past Sunday morning, so I expect he'll be keeping up his good work with the Spiders into 2018.

Faragalli has the best record of any OC we've ever had, and this has to be a more appealing job than Norfolk State.

I’d like to see some changes in special teams. Maybe someone that can figure out how to block on a return.

Not to be insulting to a guy that did a good job for us but there has to be a reason that Mike has been stuck with Latrell these last few years, right?

Can Corp be too many years away from calling plays?

I would like to see us be more physical offensively next season. We have the backs for sure just need to be more physical up front and call more runs. Durden just abandoned the run too often this year when it very well could have worked. The reason jmu is so good is because they have speed and talent like we do but they always impose their will physically every game. That's why they beat down everyone in the CAA because they have the speed but also match or most often exceed other teams in terms of physicality. The we have more talent than all the other league teams too, we just have to our physical them and we won't be beaten by any inferior teams in the league which is everyone besides jmu.

<shrug> London is coaching at Howard now. Nobody came out of that move to UVa unscathed.

I just don't recall taking issue with our play-calling in '08-'09. Good balance of run/pass with well-timed trick plays.
We arguably had more talent this year at the skill positions, and the play calling often was baffling.

Play calling is a lot easier when you have an OL who can move folks off the ball. 08-09 definitely had that with McCracken and co up front along with Crone at FB and two big, physical runners in Hightower and Vaughn. The biggest improvement I'd like to see next year is our run blocking. A mobile qb and zone read scheme will help the running game but our guys up front need to be better at getting a push...particularly on short yardage and goal line situations.

Hightower didn't play for London/Faragalli.

He didn’t but Gaskins did.

I think we're getting into the weeds here. If you want to argue that Durden's a better play caller than Faragalli was, be my guest.

The fact is, we could run the ball effectively this year. Our short yardage was awful, but normal down and distance was not. In our losses to JMU and SHS, we ran the ball for big chunks, then would just abandon the run for long stretches.

I have got to know. What qualifies you to believe you would be such a fine OC?

Not qualified right now but I'm working on it. I have a very high football IQ and understand more about strategy than most fans. I will likely be a head coach at my old high school in the very near future and I will build my resume' up from there. Gonna be a fast paced offense scoring about 60 a game!
