Every year I complain about the same thing and it never seems to get better. I’m always looking to get me and my kids new Richmond shirts and rarely have any luck. When I search for a shirt in youth size the same 1 shirt comes up in two different colors. That’s all. Nothing more. Meanwhile my wife orders tons of different shirts and toys for the kids from UVA. It’s not easy to try and raise my kids to be Spiders fans when I can’t even give them something to wear.

Additionally, the mens choices are pretty poor too with styles that may have looked good in 1990, but probably not.

I’m really surprised the university doesn’t put more thought into this. You’re essentially selling your own advertising. Why not make more of it in order to have more people wearing your school’s name around the country? Does anyone know any of the people who do the ordering for the university? When will we finally see some changes?

The problem is that the online options suck when compared to the actual bookstore items. The bookstore is pretty awesome these days as far as apparel goes, but I would say 50 percent of it or more is nowhere to be found on the bookstore's website.

Try using other sites like fanatics or fan edge. The UR website online is not very good. If you’re on campus, there is good variety in the bookstore.

It seems hard to get good variety on kid stuff online though there is good adult wear variety. If you’re looking for toys, again, the bookstore itself has some good stuff if you’re ever there. Give them a call. They’re very nice and can help you find what you are looking for if it’s in stock.

They all have the same youth stuff. One shirt. If the bookstore has more good stuff, why isn’t it online? There are more grads living away from Richmond than in Richmond. Are they just counting on people visiting in person?

It would also be nice if they didn’t feel they had to put the spider and the UR next to it on so many items. You take those two symbols and add them to the swoosh or Under Armour logo and the shirt becomes too busy.

I’m with you. The online website and the physical bookstore itself are long overdue for a renovation.

The bookstore does have a great selection. Online options are seriously limited. If you can, visit the bookstore on campus.

So having run a collegiate licensed goods company for several years, most of this has nothing to do with UR or the bookstore, it’s about manufacturing. There’s just not enough demand to meet the order minimums for certain items, so the licensed goods sellers don’t make things they can’t reasonably turn over on inventory.

If you’re selling ohio state or noted dame gear you can make all kinds of items and have a reasonable inventory turn rate but not so much with the small schools of the world like Richmond.

If I recall correctly from talk on here a long time ago, believe this was part of a settlement with the Spyder apparel company that we have to use the logo with "UR" or "Richmond Spiders" in commercial apparel - that's why the only things you see with just the Spider logo is team gear.

They actually renovated the bookstore this past summer and it does look cleaner and nicer. I always shop there, so can't speak to the online presence, though have heard similar comments as yours from friends. I would add that they have stepped it up by adding brands like Peter Millar. I know one of the managers, and have provided some feedback on choices, and will mention yours next time I'm in there.
Also, if you're a football season ticket holder there's a 20% coupon to the Spider shop on the back of the parking passes. There's still pass left for play-offs, so thinking your safe to use that one.

both Peter Millar and Johnnie-O have UR apparel on their websites.

That's my understanding too. Our school and lawyers really crapped the bed on that one. That's why you can't find anything with the spider logo standalone without "UR" or "Richmond" next to it. Find me 1 for sale anywhere and I'd be shocked. I mean you'd think you could get a hat with just spider logo on front and then Richmond on back of hat. Or maybe a T shirt with logo only on 1 side and something else on other side. Makes no sense and so annoying. I agree with PASpider apparel can otherwise be too busy as result. As you mentioned they did make exceptions for sports teams uniforms or practice gear etc. so that is why you see coaches or players do have stuff stand alone.

Check out this shirt. I've seen bball players wear this number of times. Why can't they sell this? I'd buy in a sec & I bet it would be a top seller. Surely those turds at Spyder don't have a trademark on the word Spiders, plus it's our cursive script.

Agreed, the Spyder thing is a big stain on us and whoever "negotiated" that arrangement. Pretty ridiculous.

There I have to disagree with you as Bucknell also has a much larger variety at their bookstore and they’re around our size.

You’re welcome to disagree with me all you want. Not everything has to be bought/shipped in large lots but on the whole, you get far fewer product lines at just about all schools except for the large state universities and a few notable outliers.

That’s a great point and we could/should be one of those outliers having one of the most unique mascots in sports.

True. Unfortunately unique mascots don’t necessarily translate into brisk sales either. Although I might buy a Banana Slugs hat if I was feeling frisky.

So many people in my area have no idea that there is a team called the Spiders, even though they’ve heard of our university. I think better marketing and a better basketball program would help rectify that.

I've talked about this at other times, but for a school that brags on its school of marketing so much, it should probably go back to class some.
