Sendek on Hot Seat

I posted this yesterday:

"Recently read an article about how the Arizona State AD was planning to have discussions after the season about Sendek's future at ASU, even though Sendek recently signed an extension: http://www.thescore.com/ncaab/news/661338

The evasive nature of the AD's responses made me think that it's not looking very good for HS. His contract extension was tied to an NCAA bid, and it didn't happen this year."

I have a friend who is an ASU alum, the fan base is unhappy with Sendek, basically saying that with the size and resources of ASU and the money being paid to Sendek, they are unhappy with his mediocre performance as a coach. Sound familiar?

Plus losing to a tiny former Baptist school does not help his cause.

IMO I wish UR was still connected with the Baptist General Association of Virginia!

Would be very interesting if they fired him. My guess would be they give him another year, unless they already have someone in mind to take over his job.

You look at Sendek's time at ASU and its pretty similar to Mooney at UR.

He has been there 9 years. Overall winning percentage of .538. First year was rought - only 8 wins, and only 2 in conference (bare cupboard syndrome?). But the next year - had them back in the NIT, making the quartefinals. Overall - he has made the NIT 4 times and the NCAA twice. And one year - they even came in 2nd place in the PAC-12, but because the conference was so weak that season, they were left out of the NCAA tourney. And they made the NCAA tourney just last year. They are usually a middle of the pack team in the PAC.

Would be interesting to see what they do - but I would guess maybe the AD is just talking to Herb to let him know the seat is getting warmer.

If he's gone, I think he will get a chance elsewhere. Has enjoyed reasonable success and is generally considered a good guy. He may have to drop down a level of play to come back up. Would he be successful at Fordham?

If they pull the trigger on Sendek, that would be the ultimate definition of stupidity just 4 months after the Arizona Board of Regents extended his contract through 2017. He makes $1.2 million/year, and his agreement calls for him to be paid for the balance of his contract if fired. So, ASU will be on the hook for $2.4 million. Incredible.

My thought has always been - if you got the money to offer the contract for that amount, then in the back of your head - you got the money to buy it out if needed. It might hurt/sting financially at first to make that payout, but the money is there.

I just think they probably give him another year. And could he be successful at Fordham? Possibly. He would recruit a different type of player at Fordham because he is used to running a quasi-PO system - so he could probably get them out of the basement for sure and maybe to the middle of the A10. That alone would be successful for Fordham.

Did he make it to Sweet 16?
Pretty similar means close, not perfect. 2 NCAAs in 9-10 years plus some other post season and 58% winning percentage are pretty close to Mooney. I would agree with that

Did Mooney make 4 NIT Appearances? Winning games in all but one of those appearances.

Yes - Mooney made a sweet 16 and Sendek has fallen a game short of reaching that - but they are pretty similar. Also - at what point to we diminish the sweet 16 since it is getting further and further away in our rear view mirror? It is now 4 years later. I don't think it ever goes away of course - but at some point, it loses value in my mind if there is no repeat attempt, which would mean making the NCAA tourney. Not that I expect us to make the sweet 16 again anytime soon. But how much weight that one season holds will obviously differ for everyone.

Why are you diminishing Coach Mooney? Did John Beilein make the Sweet 16 at Richmond? No, but he made the national championship game at Michigan. How many other coaches at Richmond have made the Sweet 16? Only 1, the Great One, Dick Tarrant.

It was funny when a VCU fan was surprised he was still at ASU, since he had only been successful at Miami (OH).

I told him I agree, while at NC State he had 5 straight NCAAs but "5 straight NCAAs" isn't successful.

I am not diminishing Coach Mooney and his Sweet 16 appearance and frankly could care less about JB and Michigan, since they have nothing to do with UR. I have always found it funny that people at UR rave about Beilein and the real reason is because he has gone on to enjoy success at our other programs. But really - that should not matter, you should just look at what he did at UR, which was very good. He won a game in the NCAA. Got screwed from another NCAA appearance because we couldn't play in the CAA tourney. And then transitioned us to the A10 - and made the A10 finals in the first year. He did good things for UR and then left. What he does after he leaves has no bearing on his legacy or deeds as a coach while at UR.

And my point with Mooney and Sendek is that the sweet 16 appearance has a shelf life. It will be different for all people. I mean if we never make it back to the NCAA for the next 10 years, are you going to sit back and say - "But he did take us to the sweet 16" - I don't think so. Similar to our opponent tonight and their coach - Larranage. He took Mason to the final four. 5 years later - he had 2 more NCAA appearances but he and the administration could not get along so he bolted for Miami. What if he had no NCAA appearances in those 5 years - how long do you say "well - he took us to the final four" before you look at recent success or lack thereof.

And I think the NIT this year, if we can win tonight and make the NIT final four, buys Mooney more time for an NCAA return, maybe an extra year or two.

I don't think anybody was unhappy with Larranaga at GMU. he was great there and they gave him raises, but not what Miami could do.
Larranaga left because Miami doubled his salary.

Can't blame these guys for taking the money when they can get it. We all love our job until someone else gives us twice as much and then we love that job. :)

I have heard they will try to get Pastore(sp) from Memphis.

Was surprised he originally got an extension and thought he might get the ax.. Like the guy as a coach but it is the PAC12 and much more pressure. Probably most schools there have had more NCAA appearances than AST while HB was coach. Plus the Zona quick resurgence to the top under MIller probably didn't help.

I thought the story with Larranage at Mason was they basically did not want to pay him anymore money. He took them to the final four and I think he was making about 500K. Back then - maybe it made sense. But look at programs today,. VCU makes final four and Shaka gets over 1 million a year to stay. UR makes the sweet 16 and Mooney gets about 900K a year to stay.

Sounds to me like Mason either did not want to pay Larranage any more money or just decided they did not care if their coach left - they would just hire someone else. Unfortunatley - that someone else has not worked out for them.

I hate that I started the chit-chat about Sendek, and now he is out.

Russell Turner was a D3 All-American at Hampden Sydney I think. One of my neighbors played with him at H-SC.

The fans were complaining a lot about Sendek's recruiting, that he went after JUCO players, but couldn't recruit enough Pac-12 caliber players directly out of HS. I think Sendek would do well at another program in a non-Power 6 conference, I think he is a good guy and a reasonably decent coach. He might be a good fit at a place like Fordham.

I doubt Josh Pastner from Memphis would go for the ASU job, especially after Sendek got canned 4 months after signing his extension. Why would Pastner drop Memphis to go work for an AD/BOT that fires someone right after they extend him?

Way to go, keef, you got Sendek fired!

In all seriousness, I was shocked to see that he was at NC State for a decade. He is only 51 now, so that means he was 31 or 32 when he was hired at NC State?? And he had been the head coach at Miami (OH) before that? When did he start coaching, at 12?

From Wiki:

After three seasons at Miami, Sendek was hired at North Carolina State in 1996, becoming the youngest head coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

texas is football first but texas is a better job than bama in roundball. the big 12 is also a very tough conference. who ever can offer the most money will win out if he decides to depart kansas.

Yeah,I am taking the Texas job over the Alabama job 100 times out of 100. They are both football schools, but Texas is bigger (duh) and has had more recent hoops success.

Greg has been to the sweet sixteen and the final four with the shockers more than any coach at either school, at least recently and can probably stay put and continue that BUT he might get an offer of $4-5 million and resources he can only dream about at night. bama is not kentucky and texas is not kansas when it comes to basketball but whicita state is not kansas either. really gets down to what his goals are, how happy his family is and how much money is put on the table. austin is a really nice city and texas, as well as bama, have more money than God. would guess tennessee might be calling as well and though football is king there too, they have facilities, money and knoxville i a great place to raise your kids. stay tuned, he is in a great position, has earned it.
