Sal transferring

Didn't have a ton of chances to really get into the flow, but frequently shot himself in the foot in his limited time...fouls, traveling, stepping on baseline, etc. Showed some flashes, but just wasn't enough to overcome his issues to be able to stay on the court. Best of luck to him in a new situation to close out his career.

Sal's best court time was during the NIT and he looked good due to fact Mooney had
to play him more on the court. Sal had potential with his quickness and athleticism but unfortunately had to be perfect to stay on the court. Never understood like with Wilson how he was so foul prone. Will miss him and wish him the best. Also may be sign of how Noyes is coming along.

I actually think he improved a lot, but like Mooney I just don't know how to play him. he's not a shooter. he's not thick enough to bang inside. he's not a leaper. but there are skills there. he's got a nice handle for his position. he moves his feet well defensively.

he never really got real chance here, but you have to earn the chance. it's not given. I hope he gets his shot next year. seems a good teammate.

Always loved Sal's game and potential and I hope he gets to a program, probably in a lower tier conference where he can get meaningful minutes.

For a team perspective, him and Wilson leaving are both really good things. It gives Mooney the chance to go out and grab some really nice players, which given our NCAA run, should be easier to do now. Mooney has to capitalize on the NCAA run here and use it to move our talent level forward.

We now have scholarships available, coming off an NCAA run, minutes will be wide open - this is prime opportunity to grab 2 transfers to plug holes, get a lot of minutes and if we are able to be an NIT team next year - then I would say we are heading in the direction.

I agree with most of the comments. My guess is that Mooney and Sal had a discussion after which Sal thought it was in his best interest to transfer. Like Wilson's decision, it is a win win for both Sal and U of R. I like Sal a lot and never thought his skills match our program. I think given the right system, he could do very well and hopefully lead to a pro career. I wish him the very best.

Yes, both of the players who have left seemed to have some great potential skills, just not the right fit with what we already had. Good luck to both to find a fit that showcases their skills. And really hoping that is the last of the outgoing changes...

There really was no room for Sal. Next year - maybe as someone needs to back up Grace. But given Mooney usually keeps bench light, this year as Grace progressed it was clear he would get little to no time unless of foul trouble to both Grace and Golden or injuries, both of which never happened.

Even though he hasn’t been stellar with the minutes he’s been given, Sal is a better player than some of the backup 5s we have had under Mooney. Unless Mooney can bring in a decent 5 this off-season Sal leaving is not ideal.

He didn't see the floor very much. Next year probably be his best bet. No idea where he plans to go?

I think the 5 is his best position, but he's thin for the 5 in the A10. he might do well there at a lower conference.

Or unless the incoming freshman can handle 8 minutes a game...

Good luck to Sal. Feel like he is a prime victim of two Mooney weaknesses; 1. inability to develop players and 2. total fixation on fit in the sacred Mooney offense without regard to other skills or abilities.
He’s a 70 lb giant. I’m guessing when he recruited him that Mooney thought Sal would fill out a little. Didn’t seem to work.

True. I would still rather have Sal over Madrid-Andrews or Abakah. Hopefully Walz will be able to provide quality minutes.

Sal was ranked fairly high by recruiting services but his highlight reel told a different story from the beginning. It was discussed on this board at the time.

This is a good separation for both parties. I hope that he finds a fit that is perfect for him.

SO how many open scholarships do we have right now with the 2 transfer portal additions - Wilson and Sal?

Presuming Goose and Grace come back, we have three open spots. If one or both don't, adjust accordingly.

3 open spots. And what frosh do we have coming in?

The whole super senior and extra year has thrown me off.

Walz is the only incoming signee, plus Nelson, Dread, and Noyes who redshirted.

It doesn't seem like Walz is going to ....Walz...right in and see minutes next year. Probably a good redshirt candidate, especially when we land a big guy. Which we really need to. Pair that guy with Grace, get a 2 guard who can play 20 minutes and make threes, and I think we could be a fun team to watch next year.

Actually, we are going to play The Blue Danube when the posse from the bench comes in and our opponents are going to hate seeing Dread, Walz, Noyes...

Adjusting Spiderman's earlier post:

Grace, Goose - Super-Seniors with 1 year
Burton, Crabtree - Seniors with 2 years
Bailey - Junior with 3 years
Randolph - Sophomore with 3 years
Nelson, Dread, Noyes, Walz - Freshmen with 4 years
and 3 players to be named later
