Roster - Now and Future

While I think our current starting 5 are solid A10 players, I’m worried about our depth moving forward. IMO we have 3 very good starters and 2 young players who have showed potential.

We also have a very good looking transfer who should be ready as a starter next year. That gives us a solid 6 man rotation.

Obviously we have 3 FR who have played a little in the first two games. So these are young men we need to give time more to develop and evaluate. But the rest of the roster has some question marks as A10 quality players. We only have 1 spot to bring in Tyler Burton next year who looks like a promising player.

So my question to the group is if you were the AD and the coach how would you handle the current roster situation. I personally don’t like suggesting pushing players out but if I were on the hot seat as a coach I would certainly consider it. If I was the AD I would potentialltly suggest to the coach to do what he needs to do to make the future better.

I’m generally not a fan of it but scholarships are considered year to year. We have a grad transfer who technically has another year, who has contributed but might not have much more upside. We also have 2 redshirt freshman who have not really cracked the rotation. If you were Mooney or Hardt would you push to move on from some of these players if you know you can sign another A10 quality+ player or have the inside track to another transfer like Francis.

Just trying to start conversation. I’m torn on the topic and wanted to get others perspectives. But there could be the potential to open up 1 to 3 more spots for next year whether that’s another FR and/or another transfer. Thoughts?

I'm fully confident we are going to have several roster openings come Spring. I don't know or care if the kids decide to take there talents elsewhere or they are encouraged to do so. We have to act like a big time program in this regards. If you can't help us win, you need to go somewhere else. The era of having Conor Smith type players taking up a four year roster spot should be over.

I’m not comfortable pushing a kid out.

That being said, I’m ok with not playing a kid and letting him know that you don’t think they will be seeing playing time ever unless they markedly improve. Essentially, be honest with the kid. If he decides that he wants to buckle down and try to improve and earn playing time, more power to him. If he decides he wants to transfer, that’s fine too.

But I don’t want us telling a kid he has to leave because we want to bring in a new kid, or we need his scholarship. I will not be ok with that.

I would let the AD and hopefully new coach do whatever they believe is necessary to improve UR's roster situation.
I seem to recall that in his early days as the HC, the Great One, got into some hot water for withdrawing a scholly or asking a player to move on
.For you young'uns (if we have any) The Great One is of course Dick Tarrant!

anyone with an RTD digital subscription around? Would love if you could copy and paste the Nathan Cayo article that just came out today.

Sir, I am guessing your ears may be burning on instagram.
Ex-players blasting fans on social media is not a good look. Even a worse look when said ex-players didn't do jack diddly squat while they were here. Don't get me started on paid employees of the athletic department doing the same. I hope they realize that this just demonstrates and validates the need for change.

Think you can read 5 articles (maybe less) every 30 days and then you have to subscribe to read more.

dont think one could find any roster which does not have several scholarship players who sit. does not mean they dont work hard, practice hard, push the starters and are good teammates. unless you run an uptempo, pressing style, probably are not going to have minutes for everyone, here or on any squad.

Nice article thanks for posting Ulla. I’ve been pleased with Nate’s aggressiveness to drive. Was a definite concern without Khwan or buck around but he looks better than either of them thus far off the dribble.
