My first D1 college bball game was my Dad's beloved Cavaliers play GA Tech that had just recently joined the ACC when I think Ralph Sampson was a freshman in Atlanta around 1980 when I was 6. RIP Coach Holland.
yeah -- remember the '84 team as well for sure - I grew up in a city 100 SW of Atlanta, and before we splurged for ESPN cable during basketball season around 1986, recall a few nights with my Dad driving out into the country on a clear dark night and pickup UVA games on the AM radio and remember a few UNC/UVA games especially.Think it was the 84 UVA team that went on NCAA run that was the first college bball team I really remember. And that was right after Sampson left. Underdog run. Othell Wilson, Rick Carlisle, Ricky Stokes, Jim Miller, Tom Sheehey, Polynice. Liked those guys. It didn't stick I wasn't a UVA fan growing up, more ambivalent and probably more dislike during Jeff Jones & Gillen eras. But the 84 squad is still good memory for whatever reason. Did go to UVA bball camp once under Holland in late 80s.
Had forgotten he retired from coaching when he was 48. Crazy.Teel: Players and coaches mourn the passing of Virginia's Terry Holland, an icon and mentor
When Jimmy Miller learned of Terry Holland’s passing Sunday, his mind immediately drifted to a photograph from nearly 40 years ago. Captured on film by Holland’s wife, Ann, the momentrichmond.com

Words that matter from Jim Larrañaga's thread todayYep young. & 27 when he was first a HC in D1 at Davidson.
First remember him as, I believe, the point guard for Lefty Driesell on those squads featuring Fred Hetzel, Dick Snyder, Don Davidson and others that Lefty and his team built into the "Gonzaga of the Southern Conference"...Yep young. & 27 when he was first a HC in D1 at Davidson.
Agree 100% about Holland and Ralph. Larry Bird and Ralph made me a huge college basketball fan for life. Holland had some great teams that should have won it all and would have easily done so today. The 1980’s were the pinnacle of college basketball when almost all of the great players stayed in school for 4 years. It’s a shame todays young fans don’t get to see that level of play in the college game today. Before I was a junior in HS I was a huge UVA fan, and Terry Holland was my college hoops coach. If it weren’t for him and Ralph I probably wouldn’t be a college hoops fan. RIP
