Richmond at Kansas

Ferrum - like your enthusiasm - sorry about hitting your head. That shot ranks high in our collective memories. Remember also the class of the Kansas fans in applauding the Spiders after the game. Also remember the ESPN "talking head" saying before the game that we had no chance against Kansas and wondering why the game was even scheduled.

Pretty interesting and contrasting if you look at that game statistics compared to current team. UR had 27 bench points. We lost the rebounding game 45-32 and while we did give up 12 offensive rebounds, we only gave up 8 second chance points. UR actually had more second chance points (9) than Kansas.

Two frosh - Moliva and Merritt played 28 minutes and 9 minutes. Moliva had a great game with 9 points and 4 rebounds and Merritt logged 5 points.

Difference was we made our free throws 17-20 and KU missed 10. We also hit some timely 3 pointers in 2nd half. Played from behind most of the game, but in JW fashion - tough defense, ride Skrocki on offense, and grind out a close win with the Dobbins shot at the end.

Remember college buddies calling the house and standing by phone to answer quickly so
not to wake up kids or wife.

Thanks for posting! I watched the whole thing. That putback by Dobbins on the long 3 with 5 minutes left....my goodness.

We don't recruit top line 6'9" athletes anymore. It's impossibl THEY say. And it is proven that you can't use rim protectors anymore. BUT they seem to talk about it during every single NBA game, and you hear it mentioned a lot on college games - i.e. this team has no rim protection so the other team is going to drive it down their throat.

And I will be honest, I love defense, and that is one aspect of SDSU's teams that make them pleasant for me to watch. But if we did fire Mooney, I would be fine with a coach that wins any way possible. JB rolled out the 1-3-1 and won with fine tuned offense. I don't care, be very good at one or two things as your calling card, but at least good to Not Bad at other aspects. That is moondogs problem, teams are terrible at rebounding, and get worse down the stretch typically. But Quealls and Hardt love him.

I 100% want a Garrett type to fill one of the spots this spring. we're losing to teams with rim protectors. we need a 6'9"+ 225 lb+ bouncy guy with long arms and some attitude.

We have that guy in Sol. Just needs about 10 pounds.

he's the closest we have, but Sal's not all that bouncy. I don't see him as a rim protector.

Rutgers freshman Cliff Omoruyi is a rim protector. check out the body transformation on this kid.

Correct he's not. He has some length but not bouncy. He had that breakaway earlier this season and had to lay it in. I'm sure he can but I don't think I've ever seen him dunk in a game.

With this Kansas game - I also wonder if any of our other coaches could even get this game on the schedule (JB or CM). I remember speaking with JW about this game before the season started in 2003 and how he got it - and he said he knew Coach Self, knew they had room for a game - so he proposed 1 game at their place with no return game, and in return UR got a check and the kicker was the game had to be on national TV. I think he mentioned Kansas had agreement with ESPN with so many games and this would be one of them. Not sure how that works - but it def helped UR in the long run having game on ESPN and then becoming an instant classic.

I think that 2012 Kansas game was part of a round robin tourney. Which seems to be the only way we get big games anymore. But you look back at that 2004 schedule and it was loaded with good games from a resume standpoint.

Played in Guardians Classic Tourney which got games with San Francisco and South Carolina. At UAB (believe they made NCAA that year), at Wake (Chris Paul was on team). Manhattan in Madison Square Garden. At Colorado. At Kansas. Providence in Robins Center.

Speaking of nostalgia

A decade ago, Spiders' A-10 title team brought fangs off bench: 6-9 Darrius Garrett

This is a sobering article. Is John trying to make a point that we have to go back a decade to find the last defensive stopper the Spids had on the roster? Geez.

That 14-block game by DG was insane. I was only able to listen to it, but it was just crazy. It was an OT game, so you could say there's a little bit of an asterisk, but still.

He had two in the final minute of regulation and three in the final minute of OT including two in the final ten seconds.

I was at that game and it was like, what is happening?! UMass kept going inside and he kept sending them back. I don't know which was more surprising. It felt like he had 4 or 5 in the last few minutes.

A reason that Sweet 16 team was great at the forward/center (depending on how we want to label them) spots b/c we had a facilitator (Geriot) and an enforcer (Garrett) logging minutes - we haven't had that combo since then.

Remember like it was yesterday. It was my son's frosh year. His whole dorm, building, whatever, went nuts. Even called me right after the final buzzer. Party time that went outside and forget if you needed to sleep. I was glued to the TV. Wife couldn't watch the last possession. Play I remember the most was O'Malley coming down and hitting the clutch 3PT shot.

Feel bad for the graduates posting here with feeling you get from how the national spotlight sport, b-ball, is showcased. Of course, in the grand scheme means little to what happens in the world, but how proud you can feel knowing UR is getting the most out of their b-ball investment. I don't think I could deal with the VCU fans being second fiddle if I lived in Richmond. Knowing it doesn't have to be/should be so.
