Richmond 52 Fordham 7 - Highlights

Good to see the explosive plays after turnovers tonight and the running game working. If our defensive line continues to play the way it has the first two games we will be a very good defense all year. Fordham couldn’t run the ball and we pressured the QB all game every time he dropped back to pass. Austin is a difference maker in the secondary. We need him to stay healthy. Also can’t believe so many fans were scared off by a 50% chance of showers. They missed a perfect night for football. Oh well.

Very good performance all around. an overall good game. Thompson was illusive, Collins ran like a bull. Hope Kevin is elbow is ok. Mancuso can run, who knew.

The most notable thing about Fordham was their kicker.. Soph who boomed punts, put kickoffs in the end zone, and kicked what could have been a 50 yard field goal had it not been a few yards wide right.

Go spiders

Very encouraged by our d-line. It looks like we may be able to get pressure with our front 4 this year...especially our DE's. We haven't had that in awhile. Tackling was much better yesterday. Keep that up and this defense has the potential to be quite good. On offense our running game is going to be a work in progress and we don't have a high percentage passing game but our WR's are grown men and KJ likes to throw the deep ball. Just give those guys a chance as you saw yesterday and they will make plays.

Echoing some points already made by others above, but some observations from yesterday:

-Dejon Brissett is going to get some NFL looks. Great mix of speed, athleticism, hands and route running. It is incredible how much he has improved over his time here.
-Johnson's numbers probably looked a little better than he deserved because of the underthrown ball caught by 18 and also the short pass and long run by 18 but there are some things he does that don't show up in the box score. For example, Deontez doesn't get his long TD up the middle if Fordham isn't defending the edge because of the risk of #7 running out there. Hopefully the passing accuracy improves but he is taking pretty good care of the ball and that's important.
-Joe More #78 is a monster. Great seeing him get some reps out there. He's going to be a terrific player for us.
-As mentioned above, we may win a game or two more than most of us expect because of this Front 4 on D. If that group stays healthy, they are going to be raising hell all season.
-Need to get some linebackers healthy. Caughell hamstring, Matthews foot and Payne #42 got cracked back yesterday and big ice pack and sling on his shoulder afterward.
-Our secondary played MUCH better than it did at UVA and #2 Austin may be a difference maker back there. His presence allows #21 Williams to play the nickel position.
-I continue to be impressed by Breckenridge's punting and Laughlin's long snapping. I like what we have going on there.
-Much better night by Trau.

On to STFU. Hopefully we can get the young guys a bunch more reps. The Stony Brook game is looming in 2 weeks and we need to be healthy for that one. Huge ball game up there.

Good analysis Mo but where are all the TE people??? 9 I thought had a very good game. He runs good routes, has solid hands, and we clearly targeted him a couple of times. In addition, delivered a knockdown block on the long deep pass (which ironically I think was horribly underthrown as 14 had burned his man but worked out to 18).

Fair weather fans.

I'm guessing the coaches are working on it but doesn't it seem like Kevin had a tendency to throw to high? We've got some great receivers who can go up and get them but only to an extent.

Spot on. He also makes really good run reads and hits the hole hard when he decides to keep it. Hopefully the point barrage helps his confidence.

His accuracy is still a concern, but with this receiving corps we can afford for him to be a "throw the ball through the door" QB.

Darius Reynolds is starting to look a lot like Sherman Logan out there.

9 and 36 on defense have had two good games to start the season. It's nice to know on 3rd and long that we have the ability to pressure with those two DE's. Also nice that they are a Sophomore and Junior respectively...lots to look forward to from them.
