Respect

Great stuff! I think that’s the appropriate way to celebrate the accomplishment.

A couple thoughts:

Roy Williams?!?! That was cool.

Loved the stroll down memory lane with the former players, especially from players like J Giddings who he didn’t recruit. I’ll admit I got some chills.

I laughed at DT saying “I hope he gets to 340.” Only 340? At least Roy gave him another 240...

Finally, who the eff is chase fletcher?!?! I have no memories of him...

Setting aside all the debates over coaching ability, recruiting issues and such, the person on the video who best illustrates why I'm a Spider fan is Kevin Smith. His perspective is one that, regardless of what happens to CM, we should all value a little more highly.

The fact that all they have done is put out some social media video to recognize him becoming all time winning coach says a lot. If he were universally beloved here, they would have done a lot more than that. No question Mooney's players love him and there is respect there.

Not a lot of respect for or from the fanbase and I think running a basketball program that is a constituency that you need to pay attention to.

Dislike. Come on, 97. This is EXTREMELY petty.

While I am still ready to move beyond the CM stage, it's a testament to his relationships that so many former players had those things to say to and about him.

Now off to call a couple of crisis counseling centers for Broc.

:) Acceptance stage is peaceful. No crisis here. I'll just go to football games and other non-revenue sports, and realize that the BSD powers-that-be are satisfied with a lower-level D I basketball program with a seven-figure coach.

Well, to name a few:
  • The thread is a nicely done, well-produced video of players, colleagues, administrators, former administrators, former players, and family congratulating Coach Mooney for reaching what is under any metric, a true professional milestone. It is on social media because they could incorporate texts, Insta, and whatever other media that folks used to provide their congratulations. Not because of some conspiratorial slight by the administration.
  • You don't know what else is planned.
  • There is a thousand other threads on this board where you can say the same thing you've been saying over and over again, without having to infect this thread with it.
It is my sincere hope that if and when they do recognize Coach Mooney live at a game that the folks in the stands can do the right thing and applaud the accomplishment of coaching 240 wins for our school. There are many times and ways to voice and express displeasure, and lord knows members of this board are looking for all of them and then some, without having to ruin what should be a celebration of accomplishment. I believe you can both congratulate Chris Mooney and appreciate what he has done from a superficial (i.e. wins and losses) standpoint and a real (i.e., coaching, mentoring, caring, supporting, fathering, etc.) standpoint and also wish for a coaching change at the same time.

Just the same as you can look at a thread with a nice, touching video and decide to post the negative $hit on any one of the other threads at the same time.

Hell, no. If they decide to make a mockery of our school by celebrating a barely .500 coach at a game anymore than acknowledging it like they already have, I for one, will not tolerate it. Celebrating mediocrity only creates more mediocrity. We can accomplish more. We need to change our mentality. We are not stuck in a losing or mediocre situation forever because we are Richmond; we can achieve much much higher because we are Richmond. We can have more than a nice guy - we can have a winner. The stage is set for next level accomplishments - now just pick a new coach who can take us there.

I love my house slippers, they are very nice. But every year I buy a new pair because the old pair continually disappoint me.

Hahaha. I was thinking the same thing about Fletcher.

“Coach Mooney” ha!!! Anyone who calls him “coach mooney” on a messsge board obviously has a personal relationship with him. Thats the biggest problem w this board and one I have mentioned many times... too many “insiders” opinions based on emotion and not enough “fans” who care about winning as “fans” of any sports team do. But I guess thats what happens when you root for a sports team that doesnt care about winning, you have a tiny “fan” base that mostly doesnt care about winning. And its gonna get smaller and smaller. Keep bowing to “coach mooney” and his 240 mostly meaningless wins and keep watching a fanbase void of passion get smaller and smaller.

My fandom is different for Richmond sports than it is for other sports team. I root hard for Notre Dame football, but I could care less about the school or anything else. All I want them to do is “win baby”.

As an alum, rooting for Richmond basketball is a little different than just rooting for wins. I care about the university as well, and therefore how the coach and players represent the university. I appreciate the impact Mooney has had on these young men’s lives, as evidenced by how many absolutely love the guy.

That being said, I’m on the record (and the petition) that I think Coach Mooney’s time is up. Winning needs to be in the equation, and it has fallen too far behind.

Is anyone familiar with the term "Stockholm Syndrome"?

Anyway, no one here is taking issue with Mooney being a bad guy, or not having a positive influence on his players. It's about winning games and going to the NCAA's. CM is the highest paid coach in college basketball who has not gone to the NCAA's in the past 8 years.

Yes, I can find plenty of guys that are better people than Mooney and can lose basketball game to LongHampton for 250,000 per year.

So CM sucked up to Roy at a bunch of Richmond paid Roy Williams coaches camps and now Roy likes him because CM put a fresh apple on his desk each day. Who cares????

I’m surprised that Roy even knew Mooney’s name. So yeah, having a hall of fame coach on the video was pretty cool. It doesn’t change my opinion on Mooney though.

I was going to sit this out and let the issue pass... but the best coach ever (hopefully sarcastic) but an agreement? that is so wrong. Tarrant was much superior and Beilein was/is much better.... Mooney is a mediocre coach making a million dollars a year. If the university accepts rewarding mediocrity that then it's a mediocre university.

Mooney syndrome symptoms:

-Saying we have great practices
-Wait till you see this team next year
-Repetitive use of the word "compete"
-Inability to use the word "win", "championship", "NCAA bid"
-Complete disregard for any on court results
-Disappearing after losses to sub 200 teams and then strong return after wins over sub 250, 300 teams
-Talking up next years recruits as the best ever
-Forgetting last year's statements about next years recruits as being the best ever

Condition terminal, no known treatment. Possible experimental treatment of hiring new head coach to reduce symptomology refused by all patients.

^This is the essence of Mooney Truthing.
