Pitino to Iona

Did Iona just fire their coach? I thought they had been doing pretty well the past 5-6 years

He missed all of this past season due to the health issue too, although he was still involved with game-planning, etc. Officially stepped down after the season, but says he’ll continue to help in an advisory role any way he can.

I guess it only took a bit over a year for the radioactivity to wear off. That’s a short half-life. Sort of a sad commentary on Iona but winning sort of overrides things, like, major recruiting violations.

Wow I foresee Iona being a legit mm powerhouse within 4 years. Good for them. Ive followed them since the 80's with Jeff Ruland.

Plenty of diners in New Rochelle where there are new opportunities awaiting for the Coach.Hear he’s a big tipper on the Company nickel.

Karen Cunagin Sypher is Rick Pitino's former mistress and was convicted of an extortion plot. She was released from prison this summer.https://heavy.com/sports/2017/09/rick-pitino-mistress-karen-cunagin-sypher-today-husband/

She’s got a book out too:

Terrible hire. Cluess took them to 6 NCAA tourneys in 10 years. Without baggage. So, you can win there without needing to get someone like Pitino. Also, Pitino is 67. And, the NCAA hasn't yet announced penalties for him and Louisville related to the FBI investigation. Can Pitino even win there without cheating? If he does win, will the opinion of Iona be it is because Iona and Pitino cheats? And, how big will Pitino win there anyway? They aren't going to become this mid major power with him. Just a terrible hire.

He'll get a bunch of good recruits immediately because he's Rick Pitino. Shouldn't be too tough to win in that league with better players than everyone else is able to get.

But, Cluess also won there. Winning there is one thing, but winning big? I don't see it. Sure, maybe he will get some of the best recruits in his conference, but not the country. I remember the same things said about Lefty after he went to JMU. That he would win big there. He won one CAA title in 10 years.

Better comparison might be Western Kentucky with Rick Stansbury...

I love the hire. Rick Pitino was my favorite coach growing up and he should be able to easily win this conference every year until another power team says ok we’ll take him.

Ply, he will be 68 in September. Do you think a power school will take him in his seventies in a few years?

Pitino likely approached Fordham too.I guess Neubauer gets another year having handily beater GW in the A-10 1st round. Also, the Fordham AD and admin probably quickly realized that Ricky P has more baggage than a full cargo hold on a Boeing 747.The glitzy watches alone will blind you during the interview process.

If you have ever watched him work a game, it is obvious that Pitino can flat out coach. One of the best with X & O.

Flip side, very low on the morals scale. Iona knows that, they made the decision that they want to win big.

Great hire for Iona. Yeah, Pitino has a ton of baggage, but he is gonna bring in BCS level players and dominate the MAAC.

  • Lefty won five titles at JMU in 10 years.
  • Pitino is an a completely different level than Lefty. Lefty made 3 EE's. Pitino has 7 Final Fours.
  • Every college he's been to, the guy has won. I think you'd have to be a fool to bet against him at Iona.

The NCAA will slap Pitino with a show-cause order before all is said and done because of his blatant misconduct at University 6. It will be fun to see Iona's tap dance around that one.

He’ll be at Iona 1-2 years only if he wins there. His ego is way too big for that little 2,500 seat New Rochelle gym. He’s attempting to hit the reset button. He’ll use the late, great Jim Valvano as his reference point in order to re-launch his career.

Pitino is just a darn good coach. He could win anywhere.

my suspicion is that the NCAA crushes Iona in 2 years and Rick jumps back to a P5 school. NCAA won’t touch the P5 school and it’ll be a redemption story.

Bet against what though? I am betting against him getting them deep in the tourney. I don't see them being a top 25 program with him. It is still Iona. You are kidding yourself if you think he will get close to the players there that he got at Kentucky and Louisville. And, I was talking tourney titles by Lefty at JMU, the ones that mattered in a one bid CAA. What did his other regular season titles get him there? Anyway, not so much comparing Lefty the coach to Pitino the coach, but more comparing the hype. It wasn't just JMU fans that felt they would dominate the CAA with him. They didn't. Time will tell with Pitino, but my point is they proved they could win without him, so why get such baggage? Maybe some of you would be fine with him here, but I would want no part of someone like him coaching us.

He won't bring a whole team of them, but you better believe he'll win some battles that no other coach in that league could.

P5 kids? come on. they play in a 2600 seat arena. he'll win because he's a good coach, and yes he'll outrecruit his conference. but 97 said he'll land BCS players. and there's no legitimate reason for a real BCS player to go there.

What's a P5 kid? Sal is one in theory – he had offers from Minnesota and St. John's. Pretty sure Pitino can easily sign 13 guys who are better right away. Nothing against Sal.

I don't remember Lefty winning 5 CAA tournaments...
But I agree Pitino will win at Iona, the question becomes will they be vacated later...

Lefty won five regular-season titles, but only one tournament title, so he only had the one NCAA bid at JMU.

Iona is located in the town/city of ..........New Rochelle, NY. As of a couple days ago, this was basically ground zero in the US Covid-19 pandemic. So he's got that going for him. Should be interesting none the less. He will get players, there is very little doubt about that. You know, 5 or 6 guys like OPTIMUS PRIME out to do it for him.

First off, hope all are in good health! Pitino with the strippers/prostitutes is in a class all by himself for POS coach. Okay, giving some money to poverty situation kids I can understand, but morally the guy is scum for thinking of even entertaining that perk for the recruits!

PS He's an excellent coach
