I spent the past two weekends attending my son’s AAU games in the Philly area. When mentioning to parents who know about college basketball that I went to Richmond, the general response was “oh yeah, they had some big wins back in the 80s, right?” The kids in our area who are into sports haven’t even heard of Richmond until they get to their junior and senior years and start looking at top ranked academic schools.
It’s such a shame because I was introduced to colleges through the tournament. That’s how I learned about Richmond, Valparaiso, Charleston, Gonzaga and others. It’s been so long since we’ve been relevant, that nobody knows there’s a team called the Spiders. Not that it’s important, but it is something that people would remember if they heard it. Problem is, nobody has heard our name mentioned in the tournament in what feels like centuries.
