Offensive Line

It appears that this O-line, as compared to other past units is relatively young. Is that the case? To those of us without information, what parts of the O-line are settled and what parts are still in flux?

We only have 4 upper classmen in the O'line. (7 Freshman or R F) Never a good thing. I've always thought a good O'line can make an average QB or RB look very good, especially in FCS.

Or a struggling/ young O-line can really hurt your team. How many of the 4 upper classmen are starters?

Williams played 2 starts 0, Young 11/7, Light 13/12, Kliebert 14/13

I think Huesman has done the right thing bringing in a number of OL but at our level it normally takes a few years to get them ready.

I think Huesman's offense can cover for some deficiencies along the line better than Garrett's. Moving the pocket around, quick throws, and the overall pace will buy us some time while the line is coming together. This team will go as far as injuries and KL will take us which could be a long way.

I'd throw in special teams re: your last sentence.

I've enjoyed how they've changed the point of attack by moving the pocket. Kyle is comfortable in the pocket, but I think moving it around will help his line help him out.

Just wait until KJ takes over next year. He will be perfect for this new offense and will also allow us to do more QB runs.

Sorry if I missed this. Who is our projected starting 5 on the offensive line? Light - Yarborough - Young - Williams - Kliebert?

From what I understand, the starting four are Williams, Young, Light, and Kliebert, with either Samee, Sumpter or Yarborough competing for a spot. Yarborough is a junior. Sumpter is a Sophomore and Samee is a Sophomore.

Scrimmage 1 (LT-RT): Light, Yarbrough, Young, Sumpter, Kliebert
Scrimmage 2: Light, Young, Yarbrough, Sumpter, Kliebert

In the second scrimmage on some sub rotations, Samee came in at tackle, light moved down to guard and Sumpter left the field

Thanks @KBBFL . I am looking forward to seeing how the new guys mesh together out there. I have not seen Sumpter play, can you describe his game a little bit? Would you consider him to be a Caleb High type player?

Williams has worked exclusively with the 2s. Seems to be Sumpter v Samee with Sumpter in the lead right now. Alex Light would move accordingly depending on who else starts.

I like having two options at the center position (Marius and Yarbrough). I am not sure which one will start at center, but I expect the other to be the starting left guard.

Sumpter reminds me of an Austin Gund / Caleb High mix. I think he has a very similar body type to Austin but his movement skills mirror Caleb. Taz will have some growing pains in his first few games this season, but if he trusts the process as Austin and Caleb did, he will be a focal point on the Spider offensive line for many years to come.

What makes a good lineman?

Offensive linemen are the hardest players for college coaches and NFL scouts to evaluate. You have to assess tangible and intangible qualities then predict their potential under the proper technique and strength coaching.

Size, strength, and athleticism (speed, quickness, flexibility) are the obvious qualities, but physical / mental toughness, coach-ability, durability, and x-factor (grit, grind, mean streak) are equally as important. I like to compare offensive linemen to 5 tool baseball players. If you can find a kid with 2 or more of these qualities and the potential to develop another, he will be a good player.

Does the best technique include footwork and positioning/ movement vis-a'-vis the defense?

Footwork, high football IQ, and lower body strength. As one of my old coaches used to say; "it's all in the hips".

I'm not sure what happened to Mr. Samee but all our prayers are with his family. 63 is way too young......

Another point on offensive line play it is a group of 5 to 6 players (TE at times) that REALLY works together as a single unit. There are combo blocks, line calls and double teams that really require an offensive line to gel as a unit - it isn't just 5 individual players - it is a unit working very closely together.
As the season progresses (barring injuries) I think you will see this group really get into high gear.

Any word on #75 Patrick Kliebert and his ankle issue last game. Looked like they retaped him and he possibly
could have gone back in.
