over simplify, but we have debated our rebounding for years. Chris does not focus on rebounding and that will likely never change. JB didn't feel it was critical either, but I recall him saying more than once, don't lose the boards by more than 6.
SOOOO, I pulled our stats for this season and did a review. We've won the battle of the boards 4 times this season (LU, HAMPTON, Wofford, & WF -- all wins). We tied the boards one time, LaSalle, a loss; we shot .407, they shot .467. Boards we lost, by 6 or less; UNCW (W), W&M (W), ODU (W), JMU (W), Stetson (W), GMU (L, by 3 pts, we shot .455%, they shot .500%), VCU (W), Now the games we lost the battle of the boards by 7 or more, Minn (L), Ohio U (L), KU (L), Davidson (L), AF (W, we shot .547%, they shot .431%), URI (W, we shot .420%, they shot .386%), Butler (L), Char, (W, we shot .490%, they shot .431%), UMass (L), Temple (L).
New games, boards we lost by 6 or less; XU (W), FU (W), GW (W). Boards we lost by 7 or more: St Lo (L), St Joes (L), St Bona (W--score 83-80, lost by 8 [barely makes cut] we won battle of FT's we shot 25-35, they 18-23). Add one more Dayton (L) (interesting we lost the boards by 13, lose the game by 4; lost boards by 7 1st half, down 7, lost the boards by 2 2nd half and won the score board by 3).
t's earlier post made me realize I had not finished the season with my comparisons. I stopped before the game at VCU. So here goes. @VCU (L) won the boards by 7, but lost the game by 11 (rule did not work-why?- overall shooting about the same, they won .003, BUT they went to the line 21 more times and made 17 more FT's than us). Duquesne (W), we won by 24 and won the boards by 11, rule worked. Charlotte (L), lost the boards by 21, lost the game by 5, rule worked. Bryant (W), even on the boards and won by 5, rule worked. Wright State (L), lost the boards by 3, lost the game by 6, rule did not work, why? - they shot better than us, 3 pt, FT and overall 0.033% better than us.
It appears to me there is A LOT of truth to JB's lose by 6 or less. The rule did not control, LaSalle, a loss, they shot .060% better than us; GMU, a 3 pt loss, they shot .045% better than us; AF, a win, we shot .116% better than they did; URI, a win, we shot .034% better than them; and Charlotte, a win, we shot .059% better than them. So add games to the rule not working, @VCU, they killed us on the foul line; Wright State, they shot better everywhere for an overall better 0.033% better shooting than us.
I know there are other factors in every game, but this one seems to carry alot of weight. Don't lose the boards by more than 6, or you need to shoot much better than your opponent, and not lose the game at the foul line.
Results the rule worked 27 times and did not work 7 times this past season. Seems to me Beilein's rule still works.
Any thoughts?
