No Wilson thread yet?

wow. didn't see that yet. that's a shame.
he didn't have the season I'm sure he expected. had his chances though.
there's a lot of talent there. might feel he missed his shot here.
I wish him success.

I didn't see it coming.

But now do we have a backup PG? or do we add a shooter?

Just came here to post after seeing a tweet...wish him well, but I don't think this changes a lot for us other than opening up another spot. Nelson will be the main guy, and Dji will be there too.

No real loss there. I think this is a Mooney run-off anyway.
can't see it. have to have 3 capable PGs on the roster. we're down to Nelson and Dji. don't think we were linked to any PGs in the portal. we will be now, though.

The coach gave him plenty of opportunities to succeed at U of R and for what ever reason he struggled with our system. I wish him well and this is probably a win win for both him and U of R. It allows us to add another strong player and hopefully he will join a program where he can realize his full talents.

I did sort of expect this .. not easy starting 15 to 20 games in a row and then getting small minutes (which I agree needed to happen). We will always remember his crazy important 3 in the A10 tourney. I think he needs to heads to a Patriot or CAA type of school and will start - similar to Woj.

It's hard to go from a big role to a very small role during course of season. Mostly that was Goose return but also the struggles offensively may have gotten in his head. But Wilson didn't pout, he was a team guy to the end and that shows strength of character.

And he did hit that big 3 vs. Dayton.

Good luck Zay. You'll land on your feet.

What is Madison Durr status?

Yep, this does not surprise me one bit unfortunately. Went from starter to barely playing. Loved his intensity and defense at times, but as noted - struggled with scoring and turnovers. Wish him well. Hope he lands in a great spot and can have a nice college basketball career.
Louisville?

Good luck to him moving forward! This is probably the first player I figured would be on the move for us, so it's not surprising and hopefully opens up a spot for a scorer to come in immediately.

Isaiah hustled and played hard, but always looked lost to me. He played at 110% but
unfortunately, it looked to me like he was always out of control on both ends of the court.
I think if he is in a system that is wide open with a lot of pressing and such he would be more comfortable. I think his move also tells us where he stands for next year with PGs.
My guess is he would be second fiddle for the rest of his time at UR, unless an injury or two took place.

we clearly weren't afraid to play him at the 2 in a small backcourt.
we thought enough of him to give him extended chances there over others. but it didn't work.

in retrospect now I wish a lot of those minutes went to others! (except for the big 3 he hit of course!)

This is a handwriting on the wall transfer. Good for him, I think he is making a good decision. He wasn't beating out any of the 3 guards that we think will be here next year, plus whomever else may get on board.

I hope he finds a program that is a perfect fit for him and his skill set.

I thought Wilson played very well, especially in the NIT last year, when he was teamed with Bailey. He was a huge contributor. I thought he was going to take Gilyard's role.

Agree 72 - I remember watching Kevin Anderson or Ced Lindsay, or Shawndre's high school and AAU highlights and thinking, these guys are really really good. Wilson's highlights were good too, but he was more of a bulldog, playing defense, making scrappy plays, getting in the lane - but not the high level offensive skill set. He did bring that bulldog mentality to our team and enjoyed watching him play. Hope he finds a good spot.

Hopefully Wilson gets a better chance somewhere else. His stats across the board just don'e lie. From his very limited time especially his frosh year he couldn't effectively makes outside shots especially 3s. He was below average from the FT line. His assist/turnover ratio was poor. His defense just isn't enough. Plus Mooney has other options next season.

Good luck to Zay. Understand why he chose to leave, but I think it is too soon to say that his departure is good for UR. He was in the program for two years and did seem to have chemistry with Dji. I do expect Nelson to get the starting PG role however so Zay definitely was not slotted for a starting role at that position. This will only be good if UR is able to fill a need via the portal and the jury is out on what the current staff can do there.

When you play and don’t score, but have as many fouls as he got, he wasn’t the heir apparent
to our point guard or shooting guard.
I wish him well, but…
I agree.

The hard reality is that both Zay's & Sal's time on the court were significantly reduced as the season moved forward. That's probably an indication of where Mooney's thinking was and heading into next year.

Of course there's always a chance to reset and things to change off-season and as next season begins, but...

There’s always chatter about recruits and getting the “4 star” guys in HS. Is it Mooney’s fault that our two highest recruits ever averaged 4 points combined in their career? Asking for a friend. Since you guys always talk about how we don’t get good enough recruits..

Well, some one look it up but don't think either of these guys were legit top 100 or 150 guys. As noted, I loved Zay's heart, but watching his aau highlights did not see a high skill level - and those usually over sell skill level. I was happy with the Sal signing, he seemed lime a guy with a ton of potential , never quite came to fruition. Hope he has a big year at Radford.

75 I think chemistry and basketball IQ is always what makes the difference. Seeing a high star rating is always exciting but it is not a foretelling of future results

I'll always be concerned with recruits who aren't considered good shooters ... particularly guards. you have to be SO good at everything else to overcome that. while shooting can be improved, I think you're either a shooter or you're not way before you get to college.

heavy or thin big guys are often worth the risk due to upside, but there's a high bust risk there too.

This...I can't tell you how many times I've seen lower rated guys blow 4-5 star guys out or at the very least hang with them and give them the work. Yes there are some absolute can't miss guys but there are and will continue to be over and underrated guys. But I totally agree with chemistry and IQ
