We aren't even in the NIT as of Feb.11. Beyond shocking...

Dayton, St.Louis and VCU are in. Shows how pivotal at VCU game is.

Thread title formatted sort of like a game thread I was thinking Moonie had scheduled us a random D2 tune-up against National Institute of Technology or something!

But on the actual topic, I am not super concerned. It doesn't really matter whether we make the NIT or not in the grand scheme of things but despite all that I still believe we will find our way into the NIT field come season's end.

We need to get our NET ranking up to the mid 70s to have a good shot assuming we don't win the conference tournament. I remember our 1st NIT, which was very exciting for the program.

It shows how far we have come as a program that many on this board don't care about it anymore.

No, it shows how much we have underachieved after being told for three years that this was the greatest class ever and being led to believe that the coaching staff and administration expected NCAA appearances, like we do. The NIT for this group is a complete and total failure, and no spin job will change that.

11 years without an NCAA appearance is exactly how far the program has come

An NIT bid any other year would be fine. This year it’s unacceptable. Id be generally excited to make the NIT if we mixed in NCAA bids at least once every four years.

I hope we don’t go to the NIT this year, it would give the AD a reason to continue to hold onto CM even though we’ve been told ncaa was the bar four years ago.

NIT may be the only way we ever play Va Tech.

NIT was the main tournament for years, it has lost its appeal as the NCAA has expanded. NCAA started with 8 in 1939, moved to 16 in 1951, then 32 in 1975 (I say that's when the change started), 48 in 1980, 53 in 1983, 64 in 1985, 65 in 2001 and to the current 68 in 2011. That's about 20% dancing.

NIT is still a good tourney, but we've been out of the dance too long.

We've fallen so far I'm very close to not caring about anything going on over there.

I have no problem with the NIT in the years in which we aren't quite "there" yet and overachieve for our experience level (remember those???). This year is NOT that year so it is incredibly frustrating that we are pretty much out of even the NIT conversation, much less the one we should have been in.

This year, this team, the NIT would be an embarrassment. Frankly, it should be NCAA or bust, so hopefully we do enough to keep us where we are in regards to the NIT, on the outside looking in. I suspect we will.

NIT. Oh boy. I can't wait.

I do think Mooney would go the youth movement. As we have seen, he is all about job preservation above all.

Think about it. Much better narrative to say future is bright if he plays Dji, Randolph, Wilson, and we win some games.

NIT is great when we are coming off two straight NCAA seasons and have a young improving roster. Not this year.

Worst case scenario would be we actually make a deep run or win the nit. Mooney would get extended with that, we’d have to hear all the praise for him pretty loudly, and the AD would view that as a huge success.

Who should be playing - younger guys, seniors, whatever.

Hell, if the season ended today we probably are on the outside of making the NIT.

NIT is a good tourney during our rebuilding years or what we would hope are reloading years. Like next year - if we made the NIT, that would be a good stepping stone for a younger and inexperienced team. But with our group of super seniors and lack of NCAA appearances the last 10-11 years, this is not the year for the NIT.

I actually like the NIT format because you get teams that just missed the tourney from bigger conferences, but you also get the lower level league regular season champs who get knocked out of their conference tourney. And playing in MSG for the final 4 is still a big deal and helps build momentum for the next season.

BUT - not for a group of super seniors.

They can claim that they are triggered by not being allowed to continue playing. Surely that will work.

I don't see it next year either, but I think Burton, Grace, and if Goose sticks around will get more than 10 wins. I think the schedule will be pretty light and I think 14-16 wins will be achievable, but not enough for an NIT bid.

Yep and 14 wins will be viewed as “a success” after losing “the best class ever.” More like be class to never play in an ncaa tournament.

80’s fan serious question for you here. Would you be happy with an NIT bid for this team this year? Hypothetically, we beat VCU, finish 3-2 and lose in the A10 semis. Get an NIT bid. Do you consider that a successful season?

“Yes.”

It would be a big drop from the top 25 ranking he predicted

I am not sure that gets us into the NIT, but yes I would be happy if we made it to the NIT and happier if we make the NCAAs.

Cool. Fans like you are the problem. With the roster we have right now anything less than an ncaa appearance is a colossal failure. We have the oldest roster in the HISTORY of of division 1 basketball. There is a reason we were expected to not just be an ncaa team this year but also make a deep run and that’s because of that experience and talent. Any other mid major or high mid major roster with an old roster like this makes those kind of runs; think Dayton from a few years ago, some of the Wichita state teams of the past, creighton, SDSU, ST Mary’s, UNI, Davidson, St joes, I could go on and on. There is a reason why we are not like those teams, what is it? Better yet why don’t you tell us. Do you not want more than what we have? Because I know for a fact that we can achieve more.

Appreciate the answer. I too will be happy if we make the NCAA. I really don’t want to watch us playin the NIT with this team

Has anyone actually verified that we are the oldest team in the history of D1 basketball? This seems implausible to me given teams like BYU that often have 5 or 6 guys who went on a 2 year mission.

Or is this something that someone on the message board said, "we have to be like the oldest team in history, ha ha." And now VT passing hearsay off as fact?

To be clear: I'm not disputing that we are indeed old and experienced, and that anything less than a NCAA tourney is a failure this year. I'm just hoping to keep it factual.

I’m not sure where I saw it but believe I did see where by average age we are the oldest team in college basketball. Also saw where someone on here posted that Gilyard is believed to have played the most minutes of anyone ever.

We have one guy who has played in parts of six seasons, two who are playing in their fifth full seasons, and one who is playing his fifth season (having missed a bunch of one of those). Until this year, no one was allowed to play five full seasons in college. I am not aware of any team this year that has four guys who have played as much as these four.

right I expect we are the most experienced team certainly when u factor that experience being in the same program which is an advantage. Could there have been an "older" team like the byu example or a george evans situation...maybe. Tho I'd still put our median age against anyone too. It's probably a hard thing to research. But there's also a reason Richmond bball isn't finding out and/or pushing it....it's kind of a dubious record when you're not doing very well. If were a NCAA team it would be different, the NCAA would have been eager to promote during tourney too.
