Really, really think we are a couple years late on this. The 10 year contract was a mistake too. But both are water under the bridge.

I like this list that my old poster buddy from the A10 board GOODTYMES put together:

https://watchstadium.com/news/these...xt-to-get-hired-by-major-programs-10-13-2018/

I had been beating the Wes Miller drum for 6 months. I also like Nathan Davis. Unfortunately, we may have missed the boat on some of these guys, but I do think there are quite a few that would not be adverse to turning Richmond around, and gaining a little more exposure in the A10 while pulling in $1 mil/year. In addition, we need to have assistants that are closers. Practice facility is nice, and may have an impact. But more impactful is to pay a couple of recruiters on staff. AD and PQ just don't seem to understand. No, we are not going to get involved with the seedy $ recruits, that is a different world and we don't work in that world any way. BUT, we can't always lose a Sy Chatman and Dana Tate, and on and on and on to other A10 schools. We should be more desirable than Umass, any day of the week. That is on the coaches. I would love Nathan Davis and two stud recruiters. Sign me up.

Direct answer to the subject = Kim Lewis and/or Marcus Jenkins. We can get into the real meat of this conversation in March.

Pitino needs a job?

In all seriousness, we should be a super desirable job. Hardt will earn his paycheck making this decision. Also, maybe a 4-5 year contract...

I’m with you on hiring key recruiters. Davis is definitely a step up from Mooney but I don’t think he can elevate us to the levels we want to be.

There’s really 3 schools of thought towards finding our next head coach.

1. Hire an up and coming coach. This can be risky because doing well in a conference like the American East or MEAC won’t necessarily translate to doing well in A10

2. Hire within our own program. I really don’t think we should go this route. We need to look at other programs

3. Hire from a big name program. That either means an assistant coach from a P5 school, or hiring a head coach that was fired from a P5 school. I don’t like the latter because if the person couldn’t achieve success at a bigger conference, probably won’t do so in A10 either.

So that really boils down to hiring an up-and-coming head coach or hiring an assistant from a power conference. I am not in favor of one versus the other. It’ll then really boil down to a coach who has a proven track record with: recruiting and effective game strategy

I love Grant. Might have higher aspirations and opportunities, but who knows. Oats is very nice too.

Played h.s. ball with all time great Curtis Blair. I drove by UC Irvine campus this summer. Very nice area but get much more bang for your buck in RVA housing market. I do recall he was on the radio campaigning for vcu job, I think when shaka left.
Hopefully that last line was because he wanted to be in RVA and not about his program allegiance.

mite, was looking to advance I'm sure. VCU was coming off a bunch is success and a hot destination. Wish we would have made the move 3 years ago. We would either be excited about our direction or on to the next coach, instead of hoping bumbling stumbling Hardt doesn't screw this up, or even has an honest bone in his body to pull the trigger.

Crazy that the notion of a donor or two controlling the coaching decision is horrendous when our program is in a complete meltdown. Is this acceptable to most here?

Coach Jones is my golf partner in the Spring on the occasion my high school alumni golf tourney in New Haven.

He is well aware of our incredibly awful situation here. Was aware that we took a bad L v Delaware while Yale bombarded the Hens.He had a surprised laugh when I advised him of Mooney salary.Yes,I’m a better golfer than he is.His overall record at Yale is not overly impressive and has been at Yale for 20 years. He’s got it made there with not a lot of pressure from any group-admin,alumni,fans.His bro is HC at Boston U.

The Yale football coach would be a better get for UR.

big donors are a fact of life. recall right after our sweet 16 in san antonio, bigger schools were romancing CM and everyone was clamoring, do whatever we have to do to retain him, do not let him get away. without big donors stepping up to provide the $$$, he would have been history. like many, was all for finding a way to keep him but balked at the 10 year part of the deal but guess that was also part of what we needed to do to have him remain. have to understand the big picture, we are a stepping stone job for the most part and are going to lose really good coaches without stepping up and giving very sweet deals to them. we now can complain about the big donors but without them, we are toast. it is very easy in hindsight to comment on hires, money and contracts but at the time, the AD is on an island trying to do the best he can and knowing that not everyone is going to be happy and if it will actually work out as you envision. in addition, if it is the big donors who will have to step up to pay the coach off if fired, they will have a say in that transaction as well. we can point fingers at them, be angry with them but we need them and have to trust that they love the university as we do.

No offense to Blair, but I’d want someone with coaching experience.

Odom from UMBC

For me in a heartbeat. That said as I posted before, would take any coach, could assistant from P5/6 or Odum type from weaker conference. And unfortunately all of UR's present assistants must be be replaced.

Okay, new coach could end up better or worse than Mooney? No guarantees but at least getting a new coach in here ASAP would I believe unite both the pro and anti-Mooney faction in getting back to just rooting the Spider team and players on at all costs!

It would relieve me of my "too much couch coaching" and posting ideas of what Mooney could do to help his team out here. Of course I'll see things on the court that I might question, but I'll have patience in knowing the new coach rightfully deserves his time to hopefully get the Spider ship back sailing.

And in regards to what Web posted, agree doing whatever was necessary (giving him more money) to keep Mooney. Only issue for me was 10 year contract! We realize higher ups at UR felt if Mooney became the greatest thing since sliced bread by year 4-5 whenever, they save money by having him for 10 years at said signed contract money. Though we all know in reality Mooney would have complete leverage in either getting more money from UR (probably not happening) or getting it from the P5/6 school.

I don't believe the 10 year contract is the issue. It is the path mid-majors have taken in an effort to keep their successful coaches. Since we cant offer to pay $2 million a year like the power 5 schools, which will likely offer 1.5-2 million a year for 5-6 years - what we can do if offer a longer term for still a good amount - around 1 million. I would say the 10 year deal VCU gave to Shaka worked in their favor - Shaka left, but VCU kept the NCAA train rolling with new coaches, and even though they stumbled last season - I think Rhoades there now will get them back on track and was a good hire.

The problem has been our school's unwillingness to bite the bullet on the 10 year contract. If you willing to pay a coach 10 years at 1 million a year, you also have to be willing to fire that coach if the time comes and accept you may have to pay him 3-4 million a year not to coach. You can't act like you have money when you offer the contract, but when coach stops winning, act like you dont have the money to get out of it. I think our school has just acted cheaply in this manner - and something I will post elsewhere, shows that I don't think sports are important to UR as a whole.

Patrick Beilein. Put him on the list at least. He turned down Marist & Siena. He’s going to get a solid job here soon. Guys like Oats & Grant are great but probably out of reach. We’ll see, plenty will change from now to end of season anyway.

One of the reasons for the move to the A10 was to ameliorate the "stepping stone" perception of the job.
There have been lots of long-term coaches in the A10.

GKiller - no offense to P Belein, but that is too much of jump now that we are in the A10. If our AD considers him for the job, it just shows we are looking for the cheapest option out there. Taking a guy from the DII ranks to the A10, just because his name is Beilein - I am sorry, I would not like to see this happen. Now - if he were to take a job like Siena or Marist an take them to an NCAA tourney or two, then I am interested. But not now - this is a different time and different league then when UR hired his dad.

Faithful fan, but I had enough with CM's program about few years ago. Despite being a season ticket holder for a looong time, attended few games the past two seasons knowing only too well what I was going to see.

Did not renew season tickets this year, sent a respectful note explaining why, recognized Mooney as a very good man, and increased my Spider Club donation more than the season ticket price.

Enough is enough. It is past time to move the Spider basketball program forward.
