New Coaches tracker 2020 season

Saw where ODU just offered Jaylin Hunter, recently of the Connecticut h.s. scene. Kid moved with his dad, a recently hired Uconn coach. No mid or high major offers, but Providence coach was scouting him and now ODU offered. Never see us getting in on these late breakers. Best recruiting win lately was Buck, and this was a local deal, and we could not keep him. Good luck Kim Lewis, good choice. Mooney is praying to the Kevin Anderson god that Francis is his new savior. Keep keeping on Spiders hoops.

My biggest takeaway from that is that GW and St. Joseph's are listed under the power conference category. Given the A10 being down the last couple of years, I would not have expected that. Even when the A10 is not having down years, I wouldn't have expected that.

When you hear Mooney or Hardt talk about it, it's near impossible for a non-Power 5 school (or non-P5 plus Big East) to get an at-large bid. Woe is us.

When the national media discuss it, they say it's very difficult to get an at-large bid outside of the Power 5, Big East, AAC and A10. The fact of the matter is the A10 has been a multi-bid league every year, even those we consider down years.

It's all about the narrative.

Brocc, yes, this is what a few of us have been saying for years, most notably Mr. 97spiderfan was disgusted years ago by this. Mooney sets the bar so low, if he ever sets it at all. It's OK for fans to have some skepticism and reality checks. But year after year Mooney shies away from any real public statements or goals. And guess what, the recruiting, defense, rebounding, results are all listening coach. Nice job.

Yes, it is hard to get an NCAA bid, but as you note, most years the A10 does get at least one in addition to the tourney winner.

Most years, the A-10 gets 3+ teams in (out of 14 teams in the league). That’s 2+ at-large bids (generally) for the A-10 out of what is typically just 4-5 total non-P6 at-large bids nationally (on average).

Your neighbor and rival has secured 5 at-large bids (and it would’ve been 6 had we lost to Dayton in 2015) in just 7 A-10 seasons.

It can be done. We have the blueprint. This recent decade’s worth of VCU at-large bids actually started in 2011 as a CAA member.

Quite frankly, IMO, success with at-large bids at this level is about 60% recruiting, 25% scheduling, and 15% coaching.

Funny how you forgot to mention the only reason that Broad Street is in the A-10 is because there were those at the University of Richmond who thought it was a good idea. I was not among that number but was overruled.

Yeah, I’m sure that’s the “only” reason!

Yeah, I’ll make sure I caveat every post by pointing out UR’s support for VCU’s inclusion.

Poor spider fan.

Theoretically, VCU should be used as a goal for us to equal or beat. I’m glad they are in
the A-10. But, I did say theoretically. Unfortunately, our goal doesn’t seem to be in
sight in recent years. :(

So, the A-10 losing some good teams, and the fact that VCU had just gone to the final four had nothing to do with it?

Yeah, keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. We all know why the Goomoos and the Rams are in. I'll go a bit further and say that the school I hate most should have been scooped up too. Doesn't take a brain surgeon...

If ODU hadn't started football I can see where you're coming from. They needed to be in a football conference. They have pipe dreams of going to the AAC, which is laughable. If VCU starts football, they'll end up in the same boat with ODU, UNCC and App St. - irrelevant.

Don't know if it would hurt the program dramatically, but I'm fully against football for VCU. Heck, we're undefeated. Why mess with a perfect record?

Thanks for the update. Y'all are a whole 6 miles down the road from us, play in the same conference, and are our chief rival, so I'm sure you were confused about whether we knew were aware of these facts or not. Thank goodness, you have sent the record straight for us Spider fans.

You’re welcome. Happy to help. Glad you’re tracking things.

However, the average Spider fan probably did not know all the particulars and I’m betting most of the folks walking around your campus right now couldn’t name your starting five or who you defeated in the Round of 32 (i.e. your last NCAA win) in 2011.

Consider this message board part of their “education.”

VT 4700, googling who we beat in Round of 32 in 2011. I'll help you out VT, it was Morehead State. Harper owned Fareed. Go watch the YouTube highlights and check it out.

Amazing what google will tell you. But as long as you're on the first page. Preferably 1 or 2 on organic searches. Past the first page its unbelievably diminished returns.
