Incoming CAA commissioner Joe D'Antonio will add football position
By JOHN O'CONNOR Richmond Times-Dispatch|6 hours ago
Officially, Joe D'Antonio's first day as Colonial Athletic Association commissioner is July 1. Practically, he's been on the job since attending conference spring meetings last week in Hilton Head, S.C.
D'Antonio, 48, comes from the Big East Conference, where he was the senior associate commissioner for administration and NCAA relations in the league's New York office. D'Antonio takes over from Tom Yeager, the CAA commissioner since the conference was formed 31 years ago.
Yeager, 65, is Division I's longest tenured commissioner. Yeager also was involved in the spring meetings, which ran through June 9, and the Richmond-based CAA will retain Yeager as a consultant through next school year.
D'Antonio is a Massachusetts native who graduated from Providence College and the New England School of Law, and worked as a Providence athletic administrator before joining the Big East office.
D'Antonio, whose hiring was announced March 9, is living in an apartment in the Short Pump area, with his family still in New York. He recently addressed some CAA topics and revealed that the league will create a new position: associate commissioner for football.
What did you hear from representatives of your conference schools at the spring meetings regarding the general health of your operation?
What I took away from the meetings is obviously folks were very complimentary of Tom and the job that he has done and they're certainly excited for the future of the conference and hopefully the leadership, the direction I can provide going forward, to expand on the base that Tom has set. I think like any conference, we're dealing with both some internal situations that we're discussing and we also had great discussions about NCAA matters. They were all very productive meetings.
What will be the D'Antonio touch? Is there something specific you'd like to bring to the CAA?
I think the D'Antonio touch would be we're going to be efficient, I am personally going to be visible, and I want to make sure the student-athlete experience relative to our championship events is the best that it can possibly be. We are a conference that is promoting student-athlete welfare and making sure that we understand that we are a small piece in the puzzle in helping students along the course of their collegiate career as they not only realize their athletic goals, but more importantly realize their academic goals so they can achieve the ultimate goals in their lives. It's important that we play a role in that process and it's something we take very seriously.
You have said that you intend to grow the CAA Football brand. How will that happen?
One of the things I am planning on doing and something I spoke to the coaches about at our last meeting is we're going to be hiring an associate commissioner for football who is going to be focused on football endeavors 24/7, 365. Obviously that person will report to me and I'll be heavily involved. … Hopefully, that will almost inherently allow us grow the brand and concentrate on making sure that we are where we need to be with football. That person hasn't been identified yet. We will be conducting a search to identify the proper person for that job.
Under your leadership, will the CAA office remain in Richmond?
There is no intention at the present time to relocate the office. As a conference right now, we have more important things that we need to focus on rather than a relocation situation. The office will remain in Richmond.
