From the RTD: "coach was saying keep attacking the glass. They don't really box out. They just run to the glass and try to do a jumping contest"

I think we owe Mo Alley and Wade a thank you for publicly pointing out what we all know, that our coaching staff refuses to teach proper rebounding technique.

were not talking about complex coaching strategy here, it's finding your man and putting your body in them to give yourself a better chance to get a rebound.

Mooney defenders please justify for me please because I am at a loss for words.

message to vcu fans, new rules, you're welcome to come here and post -- but if your message is to attack/belittle/demean our school, our program, our fans, our players, your post will be deleted. If that is what you care to do, do it on the vcu boards

Thank you. Just delete them all, they have no business being here. If they want to retaliate by deleting a Spider fans post on their board, fine, we have no business there either. Can't imagine that we are.

Ha!
that is more than fair
considering there is the A-10 board as well as ours to do that sort of thing
now as for your own fans...........

have you been deleting some? I for one would like to read them and see what kind of venom they are spitting out, if for no other reason than just to solidify my beliefs about them.

The coach needs to teach the players what to do, then the players need to do it in the game. I have a hard time believing that the rebounding we see during games is what Mooney has coached our players to do.

I agree Fan, after 11 years I don't think he has even mentioned rebounding to his players.

not to incite riots, but I wish UR had more guys like Mo-Alie. Yes he was a partial qualifier, but he graduated in 3 years. Believe he had well above a 3.0. Our admin could learn from this. Give some guys a chance and maybe they will flourish. Not everyone has life as easy as most UR students do. Not to mention that he's a beast on the court that plays hard every game. If he wasn't a ram I would be a huge fan. our team is soft. Wrong sport and a decade later, but the jmu pudding comment is appropriate.

Just take Mo's quote from the pre game presser, make a poster and put it on the wall in our players "clubhouse".
"Richmond, I just don't like them"
Then add the one post game about rebounding.
That should deliver the message loud and clear. A bunch of attitude might be what they need.

I really am not a fan of 'bulletin board material' as a concept for motivating a team, but if there was ever something I would put up on a bulletin board as a coach it would be this Mo-Allie quote.

I've hesitated to say the S word out loud the past few years, especially since we always gave David West a lot of grief about being soft when we played them back in the early A-10 days. But we are soft. It sucks. We lack something...passion, fire, refusal to lose, desire to win no matter what. I have no idea if the team takes the energy level of its coach to heart, but it sure appears that way. I don't know if we'd be better or worse if we had a fiery coach who showed a lot of passion throughout games, but I'm sort of ready to find out, because this way is not working.

Moe aly kochs is 100% right. We're soft and we don't rebound.

Well done by their coach to identify a weakness in the opponent and exploit it. Crazy concept, right?

You would have thought that Meaux Ali Cox lowering his shoulder on ANO, dropping him to the floor and dunking on him in Brooklyn 2 years ago would have provided that type of motivation back then.

Teams generally take on the personality of its coach. Don't forget that it was the Spider administration that cooled Mooney's heels a few years back for his language on the sideline. Maybe Mooney's interpretation of message set his expectation for his deliverable, classy, good kids, blah, blah, blah.

It would certainly be the best piece you ever got.

It's been so long I've forgotten how much I used to enjoy the fire & passion Mooney had when he started. He could really lay into the refs. I had season tickets in section 2 and you could hear everything he said when he turned down the bench. Not often appropriate for younger viewers but there was no doubt that he cared.

Geez..... Are you saying we recruit players that do not have competitive fire? OR are you saying CM kills the competitive fire? Both stink BTW....

My guess is a little of both. Harper is a prime example, he could have been and NBA regular but didn't have the drive or work ethic to do so. Great size, athletic, decent skills, just not the drive.

Are you serious? Justin works incredibly hard. He has an amazing work ethic. Don't know from where you guys are coming. OSC

I think the system itself does kill some of the fire. There are lots of ways to play basketball. The powers at the top keep changing the rules to force, or at least direct teams towards a particular style of play. As for Mooney's style, I would call it "basketball lite." It's as if he doesn't want his teams to get their hands dirty doing all of the necessary things it takes to insure victory. So instead, he believes the game can be won with some "if" scenarios. If, his team shoots well from the outside, they won't have a need for offensive rebounding. If, they turn around and sprint back to defense the other team can't break and score in transition. If, you really guard the three, they can't beat you hitting twos. All valid ifs, but it means mentally that you are giving control of a lot of the court and the game to the other team. To rebound IS to compete. You may be having an off shooting night, but controlling the boards will put you a lot closer to a win. If, you are not going to rebound, then you are not going emphasize it as much in practice. Which means the technical aspects are not taught as much. People think that rebounding is all about desire and effort. That helps, but footwork, technique and fundamentals are just as important there as they are with offense and defense. If you watch his teams play defense and rebound, focus on their footwork and techniques. The team might understand the concepts, but doesn't seem to know the technical aspects very well. Whoever is responsible for teaching/coaching those is not getting the job done. They might be doing the old lid on the basket drill, but not much else. Again, the concepts are being taught, but it appears the technical aspects and details are not.

I think his time at Richmond was no where near what it could have been. In fact I even talked to him about it and he admitted he struggles with the confidence, mental toughness he needed. It was a very pleasant conversation, he is a great guy and I wish him the best it whatever he goes into. He has unbelievable physical atributes, very talented, and I'm sure he worked out as much as possible, Do I think he spent the time he needed on ball handling, toughness on the boards, and the mental/leadership/confidence part No. To me alot of that is coaching. In fact I'd bet DT and TD do every physicial training thing that is required, doesn't mean the Coach has pushed/encouraged them enough on other things they needed to do over the years to step up their game.

Glad we won Friday night - as I expected that we would. You have an okay little program there in the west end, but write the letters (love the drama) and ask for the lunch dates with the administration. Good luck with that.

I have degrees from both schools - undergrad VCU and graduate at UR. I am all in for one of those. Funny that you lecture VCU fans about what to post but you allow the garbage above. I remember many years ago in elementary school the "VDU" joke - so not too original and not too mature either.

Great post, Octopod. Wish I'd said that!
X2

I enjoyed Octopod's post - very practical analysis. It reinforces the fact that we have little room for error on the "if's" that he so well stated. Unfortunately the system has been set up with too many "if's". This year the "if's" didn't play out so well. I guess it's too old school to want to go back to basic / fundamental basketball & blend in with a limited amount of new school / evolved strategies?
